ABSTRACT This paper draws from discussions arising during the 2024 RGS‐IBG Annual Conference session Historical Geographies of the Caribbean and critically contemplates the presence—or not—of Caribbean historical geographies across the historic and contemporary enterprise of British Geography. Given the significance of the Caribbean archipelago across the globe, we begin by exploring the presence of Caribbean historical geographies across British and North American geography publications. We follow by considering the histories of the British discipline and its cultural, contingent and contextual historiographical relationship with the Caribbean in comparison with other humanities and social science disciplines, across the United Kingdom and the Caribbean. Reflections are also made regarding the discipline of British geography and its relationship with Caribbean Studies before concluding how (historical) Geography itself might serve as a conduit for more nuanced, grounded and practical ways forward in centring the intellectual and pedagogical sensibilities for Caribbean histories and geographies going forward.

This introduction outlines how the foregrounding of a critical perspective on mobility and movement can reinvigorate histories of imperialism, outlining the different practices, subjects and things which have moved or have enabled or constrained imperial mobilities. It sets out the interdisciplinary, conceptual and historical context for the volume, providing an overview of imperial histories which have focused on movement, migration, travel and trade, before outlining how a new and emerging field of mobility studies has focused attention on the distinctive qualities of movement, past and present. The chapter argues that the fields of imperial history and mobility studies can usefully learn from one another, before providing an overview of the chapters comprising the book.

This editorial is a collaboration. With oversight from David Lambert and Sirpa Tani (who initiated this special issue of IRGEE) we invited Richard Bustin to set things off with his personal reflections on GeoCapabilities as both a doctoral researcher and full-time practising school teacher. We then conclude with a brief overview of the articles that have been selected to make up this special collection. We hope that as a whole this issue will be of interest in itself but also stimulate further research and development of what we believe to be a productive approach to thinking about geography in the school curriculum.
