Introduction: Erythrocytes and platelets share an intimate development history, due to which special interest is centered on their relationship. Mature Red Blood Cells (RBCs) and platelets show a similar physiological rhythm, and are concurrently involved in numerous pathologic states. Aim: To identify subtle relationships between various RBC and platelet parameters with an objective to analyse if a linear correlation co-exists between and among them in physiological/ pathological states. Materials and Methods: A prospective analysis of 1250 EDTA blood samples was conducted. The five RBC parameters (RBC count, HCT, MCV, RDW, Hb) and four platelet parameters (platelet count, PCT, MPV, PDW) obtained from each case were statistically analysed for linear dependence. Results: A statistically significant direct linear relationship was found between RDW with platelet count and PCT. A statistically significant inverse linear relationship was noticed between the following parameters: i) HCT with platelet count and PCT; ii) MCV with platelet count and PCT; iii) Haemoglobin and platelet count. Conclusion: A linear correlation, either direct or inverse, was seen among various parallel RBC and platelet parameters.
The medical records system of an upcoming teaching hospital in a developing nation was evaluated for its accessibility, completeness, physician satisfaction, presence of any lacunae, suggestion of necessary steps for improvisation and to emphasize the importance of Medical records system in education and research work. The salient aspects of the medical records department were evaluated based on a questionnaire which was evaluated by a team of 40 participants-30 doctors, 5 personnel from Medical Records Department and 5 from staff of Hospital administration. Most of the physicians (65%) were partly satisfied with the existing medical record system. 92.5% were of the opinion that upgradation of the present system is necessary. The need of the hour in the present teaching hospital is the implementation of a hospital-wide patient registration and medical records re-engineering process in the form of electronic medical records system and regular review by the audit commission.
ABSTRACT Background and aim: Breast lesions, though more common than most other organ lesions, still deserve a special place in every pathologists mind because of their diversity. Lesions in the breast vary from simple fibroadenoma to various commoner carcinomas like infiltrating ductal carcinomas, to rarer entities, such as angiosarcoma, hemangiopericytoma, nodular hidradenoma, pleomorphic variant of lobular carcinoma, medullary carcinomas and carcinoid tumors; which can be compared to “an oasis in the desert”. Methods: A 3‐year retrospective study was carried out to evaluate the incidence and pattern of rare breast lesions in an upcoming teaching hospital, along with clinicohistopathological correlation. Specimens were preserved in 10% formalin and processed in a routine manner. Hematoxylin–eosin sections were studied and a morphological diagnosis was reached. Results: Some rare entities, namely pleomorphic variant of lobular carcinoma, medullary carcinoma, mucinous carcinoma, tubular carcinoma, apocrine carcinoma, cribriform carcinoma, anaplastic carcinoma, occult breast carcinoma, hemangiopericytoma, angiosarcoma, carcinoid tumor and nodular hidradenoma, were diagnosed. A brief review of published work of the various rare entities encountered in the present study was also made. Conclusions: It is imperative to be vigilant during microscopic diagnosis so that rare tumors are not missed.
