A-site substituted nickelates of the type La2NiO4, La2-x Yx-y BayNiO4 (x = 0.1, y = 0.0, 0.05) prepared via solid state reaction route are reported. X-ray diffraction (XRD) data analysis confirms the type of phase and structure of synthesized samples. All the samples were found to have crystallized into the tetragonal structure (I4/mmm). The XRD results were further verified using Rietveld refinement technique and tetragonal structure with space group (I4/mmm) was confirmed for all the prepared samples under investigation. The single phased tetragonal lattice structure formation was also confirmed from Raman scattering spectroscopy via stretching modes of vibration displayed by the prepared nickelates around 440 cm−1 and 220 cm−1. The elemental composition was verified using EDAX technique while FESEM images revealed the porous nature and heavy agglomeration. The dielectric studies confirmed the collosal dielectric constant with lowered loss values in the frequency range of 105–106 Hz with retained dielectric constant in the range of 103–104 at 106 Hz. The low temperature four-probe dc resistivity measurement revealed the samples are semiconducting in nature.
An experiment was conducted to observe the effect of different concentrations of Aloe vera gel coatings on quality and shelf life of plum stored at room temperature and refrigerated/cold store. Under both the storage conditions uncoated fruits showed significant increase in weight loss, reduction in colour stability, firmness and quality compositions/standards during the storage (16 days at room temperature and 36 days at low temperature; Plums treated with Aloe vera gel 1: 2 ratio significantly reduced weight loss (4.2±0.20%) compared to control (8.7 ±1.8%) when stored at room temperature and 3.9 ± 0.2% compared to 7.3 ± 0.2% in control when stored at low temperature, and also maintained colour, firmness and quality characteristics of fruits. Colour of fruits was also maintained by edible coatings. Aloe vera gel coatings were also found effective to stabilize cell membrane and cell structure. The sensory evaluation for aroma, texture, firmness further confirmed the findings.
Traditionally injury care meant definitive repair following surgical exploration. However the outcome is poor because of deranged physiology in severely injured. Damage control surgery (DCS) is abbreviated initial procedure with subsequent correction of physiological imbalance, followed by definite repair. Tactical abbreviated surgical control (TASC) is application of principles of DCS techniques in the tactical environment. TASC is applied because of patient related factors (classic damage control) and limitations due to tactical reasons. Non-patient related factors only seen in tactical setting are, large numbers of patients arriving in short span, mobility of forward medical units, limitation of resources, and hostile environment. TASC involves only phase one of classical DCS. Complete correction of physiological imbalances and definitive surgery is carried out at a better equipped static hospital. TASC has shown to improve survival, extends benefit to greater number and helps to conserve precious resources. However TASC has its own limitations.

In this study the efficacy of four fungicides, three botanicals and one bio-control agent under field conditions revealed that all the treatments gave reduction of Karnal bunt over check at significant level (P=0.05). Maximum disease control was achieved with Tilt 25EC (48.72%) followed by Bavistin 50WP (47.08 %), Vitavax 75WP (45.30%) and Raxil 2DS (37.61%). Among botanicals L. camara was adjudged best as it gave 41.88 per cent disease control. However, seed treatment of T. viride (Ecoderma) resulted in 28.21 percent disease control. In all treatments over all disease control level was ranged between 28.21 to 48.72 per cent. For effective disease management, source of primary inoculum must be destroy. Primary inoculum of Karnal bunt is present in seed. There-fore, eco-friendly seed treatment of wheat is necessary process for diseases management.
Correlation and path analysis were carried out in order to quantify the contribution of explanatory characters towards yield for off-season bottle gourd cultivation. The characters like number of fruits per plant, average number of seed per fruit, average fruit weight, vine length and days to first male flower anthesis, number of fruit per plant,average fruit weight and days to first male flower anthesis had the highest positive direct effect on fruit yield per plant.
The present work is a study on the efficiency and performance parameters of straight triangular fins and porous pin fins in natural convection. The study is based on a straight triangular fin and a general porous pin fin profile. To formulate heat transfer equation in straight triangular fin MODIFIED BESSEL’S EQUATION is used. Similarly to formulate heat transfer equation for porous fin ADOMIAN DECOMPOSITION METHOD (ADM) is used. General differential equations of different orders are used for formulation of both fins. On the basis of efficiency and effectiveness the two fins are compared and an approximate study is done.
Background Alcohol consumption in Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients can have several implications including potential effect on treatment such as methotrexate and also risk of enhanced liver toxicity. This is theoretical risk with no evidence base. Use of alcohol in more than moderate quantity can also have direct effects on musculoskeletal health including risk of osteoporosis. There are no clear guidelines on safe limit of alcohol consumption for patients with RA. Available guidance ranges from advising complete abstinence to drinking only in moderation. Objectives This survey of RA patients on methotrexate treatment was conducted to gain insight into how patients interpret the available guidance and use it in their day-to-day life. Methods An anonymous questionnaire based survey was conducted in patients with RA attending a rheumatology clinic. The questionnaire was developed by a multidisciplinary rheumatology team in consultation with patient representatives. Results A total of 200 patients completed the survey over a period of 6 months of which 129 (65.5%) were females, with age distribution of 2% (<20 years), 17.5% (21-40 years), 48% (41-60 years) and 32.5% (>60 years). Of the total 200 patients, 127 (63.5%) drank alcohol. 89% (113/127) of those who drank alcohol did it for enjoyment whereas 23.6% of patients answered that they drank to cope with their arthritis. Most popular drink was wine (54.3%) followed by beer (31.5%), spirits (26.8%) and others (4.7%). In terms of units, 71.7% (91/127) had <10 units per week, 22% (28/127) had 11-20 units per week 76% (54/71) of male patients drank alcohol as compared to 56.5% (73/127) female patients. There was a difference in alcohol consumption in people based on employment status with 70.8% (68/96) of those in employment drinking alcohol as compared to 56.7% (59/104) of those who were unemployed. Interestingly 56.5% (113/200) thought it was safe to drink while on methotrexate. On the other hand, 29.1% said that they had missed taking methotrexate as they wanted to have a few drinks. In terms of number of units, 55.8% thought that <10 units/week is safe to drink with methotrexate, 36.3% felt that 11-20 units were safe, 6.2% felt 20-30 units were safe while 1.7% felt that >30 units were safe. There was no link between smoking status and alcohol intake. In this survey, it appears that alcohol intake is higher in male patients and in those who are in employment. There was no significant difference in alcohol intake with age, duration of disease and educational status. Importantly, 33% patients felt that it was not safe to drink alcohol with methotrexate but they still drank alcohol while on methotrexate. Conclusions This survey gives us useful insight into patient’s perceptions on safety of alcohol while on treatment with methotrexate. There is lack of clear evidence based guidelines about safety of alcohol use in patients with RA who take methotrexate. It is important to have consistency in guidelines or recommendations to help patients make informed lifestyle choices. This also raises the question whether there is a need for a separate guidance for patients who take methotrexate as compared to general population. Disclosure of Interest None Declared
Background Exercise plays an important role in the management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) to maintain musculoskeletal health and also modify associated risk of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. Understanding of safety and effectiveness of the role of exercise in management of RA has evolved in the recent years. Due to changing recommendations the patients may not have up-to-date information. As part of preparing a patient education programme, we wanted to gain understanding of existing knowledge, attitude, practices and perceived barriers regarding exercise in RA. Objectives The aim of this survey was to collect data on specific aspects of day-to-day activities, intensity, frequency and duration of any specific exercise in RA patients. The questions on patient’s existing knowledge and beliefs about role and safety of exercise were also included. Other relevant information such as age, sex, duration of disease, education, employment status were also gathered. Methods An anonymous questionnaire based survey was conducted in patients with RA attending a rheumatology clinic. The questionnaire was developed by a multidisciplinary rheumatology team in consultation with patient representatives. Results Survey was completed by 200 patients over a six month period of which 129 (65.5%) were females, with age distribution of 2% (<20 years), 17.5% (21-40 years), 48% (41-60 years) and 32.5% (>60 years). 65% of patients considered themselves physically active as compared to 35% who did not. 52% took regular exercise in addition to their daily routine. In patients aged 21-60 years, 80% considered themselves physically active although only 60% took regular exercise. Of Patients aged >60, 49% considered themselves physically active although only 34% took regular exercise. 18% of patients felt that RA patients should not exercise as it is not safe for them. 43% felt that gentle exercise was safe, 35% felt that moderate exercise was safe and only 4% felt that more than moderate exercise was safe. 44 patients out of 200 had not received any formal education or qualifications and 63.6% (28/44) of them did not exercise. Of the rest who had received GCSE or above level education, 43.5% (68/156) did no regular exercise. Looking at the duration of disease and exercise, 52.3% of patients who had disease for less than 5 years did regular exercise as compared to 43.7% of patients who had the disease for >21 years. There was a difference in exercise levels of people who were in employment 58.3% (56/96) as compared to people who were not 46.1% (48/104). Conclusions In this survey only 39% patients were aware that moderate to high intensity exercise is safe in RA. Interestingly, although almost 80% patients felt that gentle, moderate or moderate plus exercise is safe in RA only 65% of patients considered themselves as physically active. This suggests that there is not only need for educating patients on safety of moderate to high intensity exercise but also on identifying other barriers. There was a significant difference in activity and exercise levels based on employment and educational status and also the disease duration, patients diagnosed in recent years of all ages were better informed. Eighty species of Morinda have been reported globally of which, twelve species from different parts of India and three known species found to be in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Great variability within the species is the common occurrence. Owing to its high nutritive value, medicinal importance and having national and international market, there is a possibility for emerging as one of the most remunerative fruit crop to the island farmers. It flowers and fruiting occurs round the year. Noni plant is distributed in almost all parts of the island. It can be found near the coast, in open lands, and grass lands, in gluches and distributed forest of the dryer areas. It tolerates high soil salinity and brackish water stagnation, therefore, the Morinda citrifolia , is the best choice for planting in these affected lands. Farmers are showing much interest in Noni cultivation because of assured income from this plantation. Therefore, studies on its diversity have to be critically examined for various uses from the different tropical parts of the country.

Broiler chicks fed triazophos (6.85 ppm and 0.685 ppm) an organophosphate pesticide for 8 weeks of age revealed apparent sign of toxicity. The serum alkaline phosphatase increased significantly at all intervals at 6.85 ppm dosage. Serum acid phosphatase activity is also increased. Serum alanine amino transferase levels in the birds fed 6.85 ppm of triazophos increased significantly except at 6th week as compared to control. Serum asparate aminotransferase level increased at alI intervals in group II as compared to control.
Acute cor pulmonale is an uncommon manifestation of microscopic pulmonary tumor embolism. We describe the case of an 84-year-old man with a history of transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the urinary bladder who had acute cor pulmonale and died within a few hours after the onset of dyspnea. Autopsy showed that the right ventricle was dilated without hypertrophy. Microscopic examination of the lung showed that the small arteries, arterioles, and capillaries were filled with micrometastases of TCC. Microscopic pulmonary tumor embolism has rarely been reported with TCC, and to the best of our knowledge, such a fulminant course has not been previously described in the English language.
Propylthiouracil (PTU) has recently been observed to be associated with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-positive small vessel vasculitis, resulting in crescentic glomerulonephritis and, infrequently, diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH). We describe a case of a 23-year-old pregnant woman who developed a perinuclear ANCA and antimyeloperoxidase-positive small vessel vasculitis manifesting as DAH and crescentic glomerulonephritis after she began taking PTU. An open lung biopsy was consistent with pulmonary capillaritis. She responded to corticosteroid therapy and discontinuation of PTU. DAH can be caused by pulmonary capillaritis, bland hemorrhage, or diffuse alveolar damage. To our knowledge, this represents the first documentation of an underlying pulmonary capillaritis in a case of PTU-induced DAH.
Over the last few years, Argonne National Laboratory has been developing room-temperature-setting chemically-bonded phosphate ceramics for solidifying and stabilizing low-level mixed wastes. This technology is crucial for stabilizing waste streams that contain volatile species and off-gas secondary waste streams generated by high-temperature treatment of such wastes. Magnesium phosphate ceramic has been developed to treat mixed wastes such as ash, salts, and cement sludges. Waste forms of surrogate waste streams were fabricated by acid-base reactions between the mixtures of magnesium oxide powders and the wastes, and phosphoric acid or acid phosphate solutions. Dense and hard ceramic waste forms are produced in this process. The principal advantage of this technology is that the contaminants are immobilized by both chemical stabilization and subsequent microencapsulation of the reaction products. This paper reports the results of durability studies conducted on waste forms made with ash waste streams spiked with hazardous and radioactive surrogates. Standard leaching tests such as ANS 16.1 and TCLP were conducted on the final waste forms. Fates of the contaminants in the final waste forms were established by electron microscopy. In addition, stability of the waste forms in aqueous environments was evaluated with long-term water-immersion tests.
Field experiments were conducted on a calcareous alluvial sandy loam soil (Calciorthent) to study the effect of gamma-HCH and graded level of nitrogenous fertilizer in sugarcane. The use of gamma-HCH accentuated release of ammoniacal nitrogen and inhibited nitrification. Application of nitrogenous fertilizer resulted in more available N in soil, significant increase in cane yield and uptake of N with the application of gamma-HCH @ one kg a.i. ha−1 along with nitrogenous fertilizers applied as basal or in split doses. Application of N in three splits was significantly superior to two splits or whole amount as basal. Sugar in cane juice was not affected significantly either with gamma-HCH or graded levels of N. Commercial cane sugar (CCS) per hectare followed almost similar trend as that of cane yield.
A novel process has been developed to sequester green-house carbon dioxide produced by the cement industry in precast cement products. Typically, 10--24 wt % of CO{sub 2} produced by calcination of calcium carbonate during clinkering of the cement may be captured. The carbonation process also cures the cement paste within minutes into hard bodies. The process maintains high pH conditions during curing, to allow conventional steel reinforcement of concrete. The process will save time and money to the cement industry, and at the same time, help them to comply with the Clean Air Act by sequestering the green-house carbon dioxide.
Formation of strand-breaks in DNA and its repair in Yoshida ascites tumor cells exposed to gamma radiation (100-400 Gy) in presence and absence of misonidazole (10 mM) were studied. The methodology involved pre-labelling of cellular DNA by 3H-thymidine during cell proliferation in rats, irradiation of cells in vitro and analysing sedimentation profile of DNA by ultracentrifugation in alkaline sucrose density gradients. Irradiation under euoxic conditions resulted in formation of about 1.5 times greater number of strand breaks as compared to those formed during irradiation under hypoxic conditions. Misonidazole (10 mM) by its presence along with the cells during irradiation under hypoxic conditions caused a 3-fold increase in the number of single strand breaks, but under euoxic conditions of irradiation the presence of misonidazole did not enhance the strand break formation. Incubation of cells irradiated in absence of misonidazole for 1 hr in tissue culture medium at 37 degrees C resulted in repair of substantial fraction of the strand breaks while there was no repair of the DNA strand breaks in cells irradiated in the presence of the chemical.
