A low temperature lithiation/phosphorylation procedure has been successfully applied to 2-methoxythiazole and 1-substituted 3-alkoxy or 3-silyloxy-1H-1,2,4-triazoles to provide a series of novel hydroxy substituted heterocyclic phosphonates and phosphonic acids as potental cyclic spatial mimics of glyphosate.
