Abstract The excretion of 17‐ketosteroids was determined in three normal men before, during and after extremely fatiguing work. The figures reported refer to 8‐hour periods. It was ascertained that 17‐ketosteroid excretion was increased during fatiguing work.
A SUBSTANCE that proved to be Δ9-etiocholenol-3(α)-one-17 (II) was isolated by Lieberman et al.1 from the urine of certain patients with cancer of the breast or prostate, lymphatic leukæmia, essential hypertension or Cushing's syndrome. They suggested that Δ9-etiocholenol-3(α)-one-17 was a derivative of 11-hydroxy-etiocholanol-3(α)-one-17 (I) and was formed from the latter compound by dehydration during the acid hydrolysis of the urine. Later, they were able to identify (I) in urinary extracts by infrared spectroscopy2.
IN an earlier communication1 we announced the isolation of a new 17-ketosteroid in the urine of a girl with adenoma of the adrenal cortex. This compound, which we designated "17-ketosteroid II", is converted in presence of HCl into a mixture of C19H27OCl and dehydro-iso-androsterone. We have now studied this reaction in more detail.
