The behaviour of the baryon produced in inelastic interactions is analysed for different incident energies. The results are compatible with the absorption model in both cases of strange and non-strange baryon production.
Data are presented which were obtained in studies of pi /sup -/ interactions accompanied by production of strange particles in a propane bubble changer with a pi /sup -/ beam of momentum 7 and 8 Bev/c. The reaction pi /sup -/ + p yields LAMBDA + K + n pi , LAMBDA yields pi + p was used for baryon identification, and 428 events were analyzed for LAMBDA /sup 0/ momentum and angular distributions and for changes in baryon momentum. The results are in good agreement with the vector variant of a K' meson. (D.L.C.)
Some empirical and semi-empirical formulas concerning the masses of elementary particles are discussed. A new empirical formula for the masses of mesons, baryons, and their antiparticles is proposed based on the observation that the increase of strangeness is concomitant with the increase of the mass of the particle. The constants should be selected so that the formula considered will give as exactly as possible the respective masses. The formula proposed contains 9 constants. (tr-auth)
