The respiratory symptoms observed after aerosol vaccination with the La Sota strain of Newcastle disease virus were eliminated by mixing the anti-inflammatory compound benzydamine with the vaccine prior to aerosol administration. Benzydamine had no effect on the vaccine virus or on the development of haemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies.
Trazodone, pentobarbital, thiopental, chlorpromazine, propionylpromazine and chlordiazepoxide were tested intravenously in mice for acute toxicity and for effects on phenylquinone writhing, motor coordination and righting reflex. Barbiturates and chlordiazepoxide suppressed the righting reflex at doses corresponding to 13 of LD50, while phenothiazines and trazodone completely abolished the righting reflex only at doses close to lethal. Barbiturates did not inhibit writhing even in doses which impaired motor coordination; chlordiazepoxide inhibited writhing at doses which, though relatively high (6 percent of LD50), did not impair motor coordination. Phenothiazines and trazodone inhibited writhing at doses corresponding to 0.1 percent of LD50 and which did not, with the exception of chlorpromazine, impair motor coordination. Phenothiazines, but not trazodone, produced a condition equivalent to catatonia.
