The permeability of capillaries was investigated utilizing an in vivo injection of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and an in situ perfusion of a balanced salt solution containing HRP and lanthanum chloride. In the continuous capillaries of heart and muscle, HRP diffuses mainly through intercellular junctions, while in testicular capillaries, the transport is via micropinocytotic vesicles. The diffusion and micropinocytotic transport of HRP was demonstrated in both directions, i.e. from the capillary lumen to the interstitium and vice versa. Lanthanum can be used as a bidirectional inhibitor of micropinocytosis. The transport of HRP is then almost completely hindered in testicular capillaries. In heart muscle, the effect on HRP transport is not significant, due to second transport pathway, i.e. intercellular cleft passage.

Diese meist diskreten, gelegentlich aber doch starken entz/indlichen Reaktionen finden sich 6fter bei Cu-IUDs, oftensichtlich hervorgerufen durch Wirkungen ionisierten Cu's auf die Extravasation von weiBen Blutk/Srperchen. Da kupferhaltige IUD's zunehmend bei jfingeren Frauen gelegt werden, muBte mit einer Zunahme entz/indlich ver/inderter zytologischer Abstriche bei diesem Personenkreis gerechnet werden. Das Zellbild kann gelegentlich die Abgrenzung zu Dysplasien sehr schwer machen. In den Abstrichen von 352 Cu-IUD-Tr/igerinnen unter 35 Jahren wurden 14 F~ille mit schwerer Dysplasie, Carcinoma in situ und einmal ein invasives Karzinom gefunden. Letzteres hatte auBer einer auf das CuIUD bezogenen leichten Schmierblutung keine Symptomatik verursacht. Als geradezu typisch sind zahlreiche leukozyt/ire Einschlfisse im Zytoplasma sowie vermehrt Vakuolen, Doppelund Mehrkernigkeit zu bezeichnen (Tabelle 1). Vergr6berungen der Chromatinstruktur, Prominenz der Nukleolen finden sich 6fter als erwartet (Abb. 1).
Isolated rat hearts were perfused with a balanced electrolyte solution containing 1000mM glycerol for 15min and then perfused with normal electrolyte solution for up to 32 min. The perfusion with hypertonic glycerol solution and subsequent washout is termed “glycerol treatment”. Initially, glycerol removal causes swelling and rupture of the T-system in ventricular myocardial cells which correlates temporally with a period of cardiac arrest. Contractility returns during further glycerol removal and concomitant recovery of the T-system is observed. Atomic absorption spectometry and neutron activation analysis were used to measure ventricular sodium, potassium and calcium ion content. There is no apparent correlation between changes in ion content and cardiac arrest or recovery. The water movements were calculated from wet weight, dry weight and inulin space, and confirmed by morphometric analysis of extracellular and intracellular space. It is suggested that the swelling and rupture of the T-system is due to the rapid water movements that were observed during the onset of glycerol removal. Ultrastructural analysis of glycerol-treated atrium from the same hearts shows damage of mitochondria and of the L-system and intracellular edema. The structural changes are correlated with a loss of atrial contraction. As in ventricular myocardium, resumption of contraction is associated with an almost complete recovery from ultrastructural damage.
