A valuable resource for physics, the Alsos Digital Library for Nuclear Issues1 (see Fig. 1) is well worth an exploratory visit by teachers of introductory physics and their students. It provides a searchable collection of vetted annotations of references including books, articles, films, websites, and CD-ROMs. While many of those resources focus on the history of nuclear physics and its applications to weapons and nuclear power production, the library also contains materials on the military, social, geopolitical, and cultural consequences of those applications.
The book investigates how two seemingly unrelated events could have altered the end of World War II. The authors, a B-29 crewman who flew one of the last combat missions over Japan, and a military historian, weave together an interesting story based on personal experience and historical documents. The first event is the attempted coup by elements of the Japanese military to destroy the Emperor's recording of the acceptance of the Allies' surrender terms and to issue orders, under the Emperor's seal, commanding the Japanese military to continue the war. The second is the 14 August 1945, B-29 raid on an oil refinery north of Tokyo. As the planes approached Tokyo en route to their target, a total blackout of the city was ordered that disrupted the rebels' plans. [End Page 982]

Currently, implementation of standard methods for chemical analysis relies upon the expertise of an analyst for conversion of the methods into usable procedures and for reproducible execution of these procedures. One can now encapsulate standard methods in a database format which can be transferred among laboratories. These methods can then be converted automatically to reproducible procedures for specific samples types. This paper describes the application of these software techniques to standard methods for microwave sample dissolution.
The current state of expert system development tools is reviewed from the perspective of persons considering the development and use of such systems for knowledge management and delivery. The concepts and specific terms associated with expert systems are presented. The advantages and limitations of the three principal types of development tools are examined. The major factors to consider when selecting a development tool are discussed, and some of the more popular expert system development shells are listed. References to more detailed discussions of the topics are provided. No attempt is made to describe the actual processes involved in taking an expert system from its inception through the prototype to a robust delivery system.
