This study evaluated the effects of including different levels of prickly pear cactus (Nopalea cochenillifera) in the diets of crossbred dairy cows (Holstein × Zebu) on nutrient intake and digestibility, nitrogen balance, microbial protein synthesis, milk yield and composition, and feeding behavior. Eight multiparous cows (15.9 ± 1.8 kg/day of milk; 100 ± 11 days in milk, mean ± SD) were assigned to a double 4 × 4 Latin square design with 21-day periods, consisting of 16 days of dietary adaptation followed by 5 days of data collection. The experimental diets were: (1) CON, without prickly pear cactus (PPC); (2) PPC16, containing 16
Seasonal feed scarcity remains a major constraint to ruminant production in tropical and semi-arid regions, where low-quality crop residues and mature forages dominate dry-season diets. Ammoniation, using anhydrous ammonia or urea-based treatment, represents a practical approach to improving the nutritive value of these resources; however, its mechanistic basis and system-level implications have not been comprehensively synthesized in recent literature. This review integrates evidence published between 2015 and 2025, complemented by foundational studies, to examine the biochemical mechanisms, nutritional responses, and production- and environmental-level outcomes of ammoniation in tropical livestock systems. Ammonia-induced disruption of lignin–carbohydrate linkages enhance fiber accessibility and nitrogen availability, generally resulting in increased intake (10–40
The objective of this study to evaluate the effects of two levels of concentrate supplementation (1 g/kg or 2 g/kg of body weight, BW) on the intake, apparent digestibility and performance of Girolando steers on tropical pastures during the post-weaning phase in the dry to rainy season transition. We used 20 Girolando steers (half Holstein x half Zebu), with an average initial BW of 151.15 ± 50 kg and 12 months of age. The steers grazed on Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu pasture. The animals were randomly assigned supplementation with 1 g/kg of BW (SC1) or supplementation with 2 g/kg of BW (SC2) of a concentrate supplement. The forage dry matter intake (%BW), neutral detergent fiber intake (NDF) and NDF digestibility were higher (p < 0.05) for steers supplemented with a level of 1 g/kg of BW. Supplement intake (kg/day), non-fibrous carbohydrate (NFC) intake and NFC digestibility were higher (p < 0.05) for steers consuming 2 g/kg BW of the concentrated supplement. The body weight at slaughter (297 kg) and average daily gain (0.57 kg/day) were not influenced by the level of supplementation. The use of 1 g/kg BW of a concentrated supplement is recommended for post-weaning steers on tropical pastures during the dry to rainy season transition.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of ammoniated sugarcane bagasse with forage palm replacing corn in diets for confined sheep. Eight Santa Inês crossbred lambs, males, not castrated, with an initial average body weight of 26.7 kg, were distributed in a 4 × 4 double Latin square design, with four levels of replacement of corn with palm (0, 333, 666 and 1000 g/kg) and four collection periods of 21 days each, with 17 days for adaptation to the diets and 4 days for data collection in each period. A ratio of 300 g/kg of roughage and 700 g/kg of concentrate was used, formulated for gains of 200 g/day. The replacing corn with palm did not influence dry matter intake (1134.9 g/day), digestibility of crude protein (627 g/kg) and neutral detergent fiber (508 g/kg), in feeding efficiency of dry matter (253.2 g/hour), nitrogen balance (15.8 g/day) and microbial protein synthesis (43.4 g/day) of animals, in addition to increasing microbial efficiency (81.3 g) and reduce water intake (0.1 L/day), when there was total replacement of corn by palm. Forage palm can replace corn by up to 100
The aim was to evaluate the fermentative dynamics and nutritional characteristics of mixed maize silages with and without commercially viable cobs associated with butterfly pea hay. A completely randomized experimental design was used in a 2 x 2 factorial scheme, with 4 replications, which corresponded to the maize cobs factor and the butterfly pea hay factor (inclusion of 30% of butterfly pea hay during the ensiling process and without the inclusion of butterfly pea hay). The inclusion of butterfly pea hay increased the dry matter contents, reduced the silage density and its interaction with the absence of viable cobs promoted less losses and greater dry matter recovery (P < 0.05). The lowest value of butyric acid was found in the interaction of silage without viable cobs and butterfly pea hay (P < 0.05). The inclusion of butterfly pea hay reduced fiber contents and increased protein contents (P < 0.05). The inclusion of 30% butterfly pea hay promotes better values of organic acids, nutritional components and lower fermentation losses when the maize is ensiled without cobs that are viable for commerce.
Our hypothesis is that the total replacement of ground corn grain (GCG) by cactus pear (CP) in association with 70% of leucaena hay (LH) increases dry matter (DM) intake and digestibility and nitrogen metabolism and maintains the feeding behavior of cattle. The objective was to evaluate the effects of inclusion of these feeds on the nutritional parameters and nitrogen metabolism of cattle. Eight steers, average age of 12 months, weight of 267.5 ± 15 kg, were distributed into two simultaneous 4 × 4 Latin squares according to a 2 × 2 factorial scheme, in which the first factor evaluated was different proportions of inclusion of LH (50 or 70% DM basis), and the second factor was the total replacement of GCG with CP. There was lower DM intake in animals fed with 70% LH. There was an interaction between the factors for DM digestibility, in which the animals fed CP did not differ regardless of the inclusion of LH, but for animals without CP, the greater inclusion of LH decreases DM digestibility. The inclusion of CP decreased free water intake. There was an interaction for total water intake (WI), in which the animals fed without CP presented similarity for this, while in the inclusion of CP, the animals fed 70% of LH presented higher WI. Also, lower values of chewing were observed for animals fed with CP. The replacement of GCG with CP improves the efficiency of nitrogen utilization in the rumen. The inclusion of 70% LH depresses intake.
ABSTRACT Arterioportal communications are complex hepatic vascular abnormalities. These are rarely seen in dogs and typically manifest as neurological, gastrointestinal, and developmental changes. This report describes clinical, laboratory and imaging findings associated with hepatic arterioportal malformation in a male Shih-Tzu dog aged 12 months. The diagnosis was achieved using computed tomographic angiography. The therapeutic approach selected consisted of palliative medical management (diuretics) combined with dietary protein restriction (3.6 g/100 kcal) provided by hepatic diet and gut activity modulation using lactulose. Surgical intervention was not recommended due to the complexity of vascular changes and portal hypertension. Despite initial clinical improvement, the patient died of disease-related complications seven months after diagnosis. Computed tomographic angiography was vital for accurate diagnosis and treatment selection, that needs to be more investigated.
Our objective was to evaluate the effects of leucaena hay combined with cactus pear on the nutritional parameters and nitrogen metabolism of crossbred steers. Eight crossbred steers, with an average age of 12 months, initial weight of 267.5 ± 15 kg, were distributed into two simultaneous 4x4 Latin squares according to a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement, in which the first factor evaluated two different proportions of inclusion of hay from leucena (50 or 70% dry matter basis), and the second factor was the total replacement of ground corn grain with cactus pear. Data were analyzed by the MIXED procedure of SAS. Significance was set at p ≤ 0.05. There was lower dry matter (DM) intake (P < 0.05) in animals fed 70% hay. There was an interaction (P < 0.05) between the factors for DM digestibility, in which the animals fed cactus pear did not differ regardless of the inclusion of leucaena, but for animals without cactus pear, the greater inclusion of leucaena hay decreases DM digestibility. The inclusion of cactus decreased (P < 0.05) free water intake. On the other hand, there was interaction (P < 0.05) for total water intake, in which the animals fed without cactus pear presented similarity for this, while in the inclusion of cactus pear, the animals fed 70% of leucaena presented higher water intake. Also, lower values (P < 0.05) of chewing (number/bolus and number/d) were observed for animals fed cactus pear.
The use of agroindustrial byproducts in cattle diets, such as castor-bean (Ricinus communis L.) meal, is a more sustainable practice because it does not compete with human food and reduces the volume of organic waste deposited in the environment. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of replacing soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) meal with castor-bean meal on the intake, digestibility, feeding behavior and performance of crossbred steers supplemented while on Urochloa brizantha (Hochst. ex A. Rich.) R.D. Webster 'Marandu' pasture. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete design with 40 animals, which started the experiment weighing 227.1 kg, at 10 mo of age, and were divided into four treatment groups. Castor-bean meal was added to replace soybean meal at the levels of 0, 90, 180, and 280 g kg-1 in the supplement, which was supplied at the rate of 0.4% of body weight. Total DM, pasture DM and neutral detergent fiber intakes did not change (P > 0.05) with the castor-bean levels added to the supplement. Ether extract intake and digestibility decreased linearly (P < 0.05). The animals showed no differences (P > 0.05) in production performance (average daily gain), which averaged 0.65 kg d-1. Grazing, idle, and rumination times were not influenced (P > 0.05) by the treatments. Castor-bean meal can be included up to 280 g kg-1 in the total diet without changing the performance of crossbred steers finished on tropical pasture.
Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the first and last stocking strategies combined with a partial substitution of the protein from the supplement for urea nitrogen on nutrient intake and digestibility, milk composition, and nitrogen balance of primiparous Girolando cows. The cows were allocated to a double 4 × 4 Latin square composed of four animals and four treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Supplements were formulated to provide an intake of 0.6% body weight, with and without the inclusion of 21% urea nitrogen in their composition. The first stocking management method improved nutrient intake and digestibility. Supplementation with urea led to a 47% higher excretion of urine N (g/day) than the urea treatment. The combination of the supplement without urea and the first stocking provided higher intake and retention of nitrogen and higher retained-N levels (%digested N). The combination of a supplement containing 21% urea nitrogen and the first stocking can be used without compromising the nutritional and productive parameters of the cows.
ABSTRACT Several studies have assessed the therapeutic potential of natural products against mastitis, but only a few have evaluated the impacts of this alternative therapy on the main properties of milk and dairy products. In this study, we observed how the treatment of mastitis with ethanolic extract of Jatobá (Hymenaea martiana Hayne) influenced the physicochemical and sensory characteristics of coalho cheese. An ointment containing the ethanolic extract was prepared for intramammary use in six dairy goats. The experiment was conducted in three experimental moments. Milking was performed, manually, and both milk and cheese were subjected to physicochemical and sensory tests. No difference was observed (p>0.05) in the physicochemical aspects of milk between the studied groups. The solids-non-fat showed a statistical difference between experimental moments M1 and M2. The protein means varied from 3.33 to 3.62, and there was a statistical difference between the two moments, while the lactose means varied from 4.79 to 5.38%. The physicochemical aspects of cheese remained similar with both treatments. Except for appearance, the sensory characteristics showed no statistical difference. In conclusion, the use of Jatobá extract ointment did not influence the physicochemical and sensory characteristics of goat milk or cheese.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the production and nutritive value of the hydroponic forage of corn and pearl millet grown in different organic substrates. It was carried out in a completely randomized design in 2 x 3 factorial scheme with four replications. The grasses used were corn and pearl millet and sugarcane bagasse, chopped elephant grass and chopped Brachiaria grass as substrates. The harvest was carried out 15 days after sowing, with seed density of 2 kg/m², irrigated with water and commercial nutrient solution. The productive parameters and chemical composition of the hydroponic forage were evaluated. The use of sugarcane bagasse substrate resulted in a greater production of total dry mass for corn among the other treatments, which reflected in better efficiency in the production parameters. As for substrates composed of chopped grass, lower values of neutral detergent fiber were identified in both corn and pearl millet. The substrates and grass species affect the evaluated parameters, in which the use of sugarcane bagasse resulted in greater total production of dry mass using corn. The substrates based on chopped grass reflected in biomass with reduced fiber content, high levels of digestible nutrients, in addition to high protein content.
