Digital devices like tablets, media players, and kiosks are increasingly deployed in U.S. prisons. These technologies can enable incarcerated people to access education, communicate with loved ones, and develop vital reentry skills. However, they can also introduce new privacy and security risks for incarcerated people who have little agency over their usage and contracts, and are currently carved out of many consumer protection safeguards. To investigate these issues, we conducted focus groups and interviews with system-impacted people (n=17), i.e., those formerly incarcerated, and their relatives, to investigate experiences with device-related security and privacy vulnerabilities and the power dynamics that affect their use. In our findings, participants describe pervasive surveillance, censorship, and usability problems with the technology available to them, including shifting and seemingly arbitrary usage policies. These policies strain relationships both inside and outside prisons and contribute to negative downstream effects for incarcerated users. We recommend ways to better balance prison security concerns with privacy-related needs of system-impacted individuals by promoting accountability for technology-related decisions, providing public oversight of digital purchasing and use policies, and designing digital tools with them – the actual end-users – in mind.
AI agents that autonomously execute tool calls on a user's behalf raise pressing questions about permission management: what role could users play, and what role should they play? Despite many proposed approaches, the user's role in agentic permission management remains under explored. We introduce Janus, a playground system for implementing and evaluating user-involved agentic permission management designs. Janus consists of two components: Janus-Core, a modular agentic system supporting a diverse spectrum of permission management designs, and Janus-Harness, an automated evaluation framework. Grounded in a conceptual model that identifies key design axes for user involvement, we implement six permission assistants spanning the design space and evaluate them across three scenarios and three synthetic responders. We demonstrate that user input is critical and can significantly strengthen privacy and security, that AI augmentation of user decisions can help reduce cognitive load, and that realistic user behavior including permission fatigue must be accounted for in system design. No single design performs optimally across all contexts, motivating a more principled and context-sensitive approach to deploying permission assistants in agentic systems. Janus is publicly available to support future investigation into this dimension of agentic system design.
As AI agents gain prevalance, users are increasingly exposed to the risks such systems entail. Prompt injection attacks, as well as hallucination, can cause agents to leak private information to third parties. As autonomous systems, agents also present the more active danger of performing sensitive tasks, such as bank transactions, without the user's intent or authorization. Recognizing this challenge, the agentic security community has developed numerous proposals for secure agentic systems. Much of this work has focused on product-level approaches, where agentic system developers determine and apply the same security policies and permissions to all users. Yet different users have different needs and preferences, necessitating support for user-level permissions policies in agentic AI systems. To understand how user-level permissions are handled in AI agent systems, we survey 21 proposals for agent permissions systems. From this review, we construct a taxonomy of how different systems specify user-level permissions policies, both at the user interface and internally; derive internal policies from user input; and enforce those policies at run-time. We then analyze five prominent commercial agents and compare their permissions handling to agentic permissions systems in the literature. We identify several high-level themes across the literature and commerical agents, as well as multiple gaps where future work is needed.
Generative AI (genAI) is increasingly being integrated into children's everyday lives, not only through screens but also through so-called "screen-free" AI toys. These toys can simulate emotions, personalize responses, and recall prior interactions, creating the illusion of an ongoing social connection. Such capabilities raise important questions about how children understand boundaries, agency, and relationships when interacting with AI toys. To investigate this, we conducted two participatory design sessions with eight children ages 6-11 where they engaged with three different AI toys, shifting between play, experimentation, and reflection. Our findings reveal that children approached AI toys with genuine curiosity, profiling them as social beings. However, frequent interaction breakdowns and mismatches between apparent intelligence and toy-like form disrupted expectations around play and led to adversarial play. We conclude with implications and design provocations to navigate children's encounters with AI toys in more transparent, developmentally appropriate, and responsible ways.
As AI agents attempt to autonomously act on users' behalf, they raise transparency and control issues. We argue that permission-based access control is indispensable in providing meaningful control to the users, but conventional permission models are inadequate for the automated agentic execution paradigm. We therefore propose automated permission management for AI agents. Our key idea is to conduct a user study to identify the factors influencing users' permission decisions and to encode these factors into an ML-based permission management assistant capable of predicting users' future decisions. We find that participants' permission decisions are influenced by communication context but importantly individual preferences tend to remain consistent within contexts, and align with those of other participants. Leveraging these insights, we develop a permission prediction model achieving 85.1
A growing class of agentic systems maintain persistent state across sessions through memory files, behavioral preferences, and knowledge bases. While this makes agents more useful and self-improving, it also creates a new attack surface for prompt injections in which malicious instructions can be embedded within persistent files and influence future behavior. In this work, we study prompt injection attacks in memory-based agentic systems using a sandboxed synthetic workspace. We evaluate two agentic systems, Anthropic Claude Code and OpenAI Codex, across four models: Claude Haiku 4.5, Claude Opus 4.7, GPT-5.2, and GPT-5.5. Our results show that although it is difficult to make an agent overwrite its own memory files using untrusted external content, payloads already planted in those files can successfully attack current and future sessions. Attack success and payload persistence vary substantially across systems, models, adversarial goals, and multi-session attack sequences. These findings show that persistent memory changes the threat model for prompt injection and motivate defenses that protect memory updates without removing useful agent adaptation.
Taking and sharing photos is a routine practice in childcare institutions, used to document children’s learning, communicate with families, and support marketing. These practices are typically regulated through consent forms, the institutional mechanism for authorizing photography and media use. While prior research has examined parents’ photo-taking and sharing, little is known about consent in institutional childcare, where formal policies and non-parental figures (e.g., staff and administrators) shape children’s privacy in distinct ways. To investigate this, we analyzed 42 consent forms and conducted 21 semi-structured interviews with parents, educators, and administrators in U.S.-based childcare institutions. Our findings reveal that consent forms serve as procedural, one-time agreements rather than meaningful safeguards. Parents navigate consent pragmatically amidst structural precarity and power asymmetries, while staff performs the unseen labor of consent enforcement. We conclude with implications for reimagining consent and designing usable institutional mechanisms that support children’s privacy and safety in practice.
Recent progress in (Large) Language Models (LMs) has enabled the development of autonomous LM-based agents capable of executing complex tasks with minimal supervision. These agents have started to be integrated into systems with significant autonomy and authority. The security community has been studying their security. One emerging direction to mitigate security risks is to constrain agent behaviours via access control and permissioning mechanisms. Existing permissioning proposals, however, remain difficult to compare due to the absence of a shared formal foundation. This work provides such a foundation. We first systematize the landscape by constructing an attack taxonomy tailored to language models, the computational primitives of agentic systems. We then develop a formal treatment of agentic access control by defining an AIOracle algorithmically and introducing a security-game framework that captures completeness (in the absence of an adversary) and adversarial robustness. Our security game unifies confidentiality, integrity, and availability within a single model. Using this framework, we show that existing approaches to confidentiality of training data fundamentally conflict with completeness. Finally, we formalize a modular decomposition of helpfulness and harmlessness objectives and prove its soundness, in order to enable principled reasoning about the security of agentic system designs. Our studies suggests that if we were to design a secure system with measurable security, then we might want to use a modular approach to break the problem into sub-problems and let the composition on different modules complete the design. Our studies show that this natural approach with the relevant formalism is needed to prove security reductions.
As AI-generated content (e.g., "slop") becomes more prevalent online, people are developing strategies to attempt to identify it (or, conversely, to gain confidence that something is not AI-generated). What strategies are people using, and how are they changing over time as generative AI models themselves change? In this work, we catalog and analyze 2 years and 8 months of the AI detection strategies discussed by users of two popular Reddit communities (r/isthisAI and r/RealOrAI) that use the wisdom of crowds to identify AI-generated media. Through a mixed-method analysis of 13,098 posts and 222,060 comments within these communities, we catalog and analyze the prevalence of 12 AI-detection strategies, including examining fine-grained physical details, recognizing trends in AI-created content, and the assumptions people make about what models are capable of producing. Furthermore, we find that these strategies and mental models shift over time in accordance with changing AI capabilities and in response to online social trends. By systematically cataloging users' AI detection strategies, we lay the groundwork for user-facing guidance and future research.
Building on recent work studying content in the online advertising ecosystem, including our own prior study of political ads on the web during the 2020 U.S. elections, we analyze political ad content appearing on websites leading up to and during the 2024 U.S. elections. Crawling a set of 745 news and media websites several times from three different U.S. locations (Atlanta, Seattle, and Los Angeles), we collect a dataset of over 15000 ads, including (at least) 315 political ads, and we analyze it quantitatively and qualitatively. Among our findings: a prevalence of clickbait political news ads, echoing prior work; a seemingly new emphasis (compared to 2020) on voting safety and eligibility ads, particularly in Atlanta; and non-election related political ads around the Israel-Palestine conflict, particularly in Seattle. We join prior work in calling for more oversight and transparency of political-related ads on the web. Our dataset is available at https://ad-archive.cs.washington.edu.
Responding to misinformation online can be an exhausting and thankless task. It takes time and energy to write effective content, puts users at risk of online harassment, and strains personal relationships. Despite these challenges, there are people who voluntarily respond to misinformation online, and some have established communities on platforms such as Reddit, Discord, and X (formerly Twitter) dedicated to these efforts. In this work, we interviewed 8 people who participate in such communities to understand the type of support they receive from each other in these discussion spaces. Interviewees described that their communities helped them sustain motivation, save time, and improve their communication skills. Common practices included sharing sources and citations, providing emotional support, giving others advice, and signaling positive feedback. We present our findings as three case studies and discuss opportunities for future work to support collaborative practices in online communities dedicated to misinformation response. Our work surfaces how resource sharing, social motivation, and decentralization can make misinformation correction more sustainable, rewarding, and effective for online citizens.
Technology design has historically prioritized the needs of more socially powerful groups in society (e.g., affluent white men, or the default persona). How technology designers come to prioritize certain groups while overlooking others is a question with real implications for design. We rely on psychological theories of prototypicality to characterize the "gendered persona," or the gender identity that comes spontaneously to mind when considering users. We conduct three studies including both non-expert convenience samples and expert samples of participants with technology design experience, exploring the gendered persona across populations and a range of technologies. We find that people are more likely to spontaneously describe users as men (across several technologies), whereas women are largely overlooked. Men represent the "prototypical user," a cultural stereotype shared by both non-experts and experts from populations whose stereotypes could impact real design decisions.
Large language models (LLMs) extended as systems, such as ChatGPT, have begun supporting third-party applications. These LLM apps leverage the de facto natural language-based automated execution paradigm of LLMs: that is, apps and their interactions are defined in natural language, provided access to user data, and allowed to freely interact with each other and the system. These LLM app ecosystems resemble the settings of earlier computing platforms, where there was insufficient isolation between apps and the system. Because third-party apps may not be trustworthy, and exacerbated by the imprecision of natural language interfaces, the current designs pose security and privacy risks for users. In this paper, we evaluate whether these issues can be addressed through execution isolation and what that isolation might look like in the context of LLM-based systems, where there are arbitrary natural language-based interactions between system components, between LLM and apps, and between apps. To that end, we propose ISOLATEGPT, a design architecture that demonstrates the feasibility of execution isolation and provides a blueprint for implementing isolation, in LLM-based systems. We evaluate ISOLATEGPT against a number of attacks and demonstrate that it protects against many security, privacy, and safety issues that exist in non-isolated LLM-based systems, without any loss of functionality. The performance overhead incurred by ISOLATEGPT to improve security is under 30% for three-quarters of tested queries.
The Heilmeier Catechism consists of a set of questions that researchers and practitioners can consider when formulating research and applied engineering projects. In this article, we suggest explicitly asking who is included and who is left out of consideration.
Practitioners building online services and tools often turn to online forums such as Reddit, Law Stack Exchange, and Stack Overflow for legal guidance to ensure compliance with the GDPR. The legal information presented in these forums directly impacts present-day industry practitioner's decisions. Online forums can serve as gateways that, depending on the accuracy and quality of the answers provided, may either support or undermine the protection of privacy and data protection fundamental rights. However, there is a need for deeper investigation into practitioners' decision-making processes and their understanding of legal compliance when seeking for legal information online. Using GDPR's “legitimate interests” legal ground for processing personal data as a case study, we investigate how practitioners use online forums to identify common areas of confusion in applying legitimate interests in practice, and evaluate how legally sound online forum responses are. Our analysis found that applying the legal basis of legitimate interest is complex for practitioners, with important implications for how the GDPR is implemented in practice. The legal analysis showed that crowdsourced legal information tends to be legally sound, though sometimes incomplete. We outline recommendations to improve the quality of online forums by ensuring that responses are more legally sound and comprehensive, enabling practitioners to apply legitimate interests effectively in practice and uphold the GDPR.
Synthetic nonconsensual explicit imagery, also referred to as “deepfake nudes”, is becoming faster and easier to generate. In the last year, synthetic nonconsensual explicit imagery was reported in at least ten US middle and high schools, generated by students of other students. Teachers are at the front lines of this new form of image abuse and have a valuable perspective on threat models in this context. We interviewed 17 US teachers to understand their opinions and concerns about synthetic nonconsensual explicit imagery in schools. No teachers knew of it happening at their schools, but most expected it to be a growing issue. Teachers proposed many interventions, such as improving reporting mechanisms, focusing on consent in sex education, and updating technology policies. However, teachers disagreed about appropriate consequences for students who create such images. We unpack our findings relative to differing models of justice, sexual violence, and sociopolitical challenges within schools.
We propose a method for using Web Authentication APIs for SSH authentication, enabling passwordless remote server login with passkeys. These are credentials that are managed throughout the key lifecycle by an authenticator on behalf of the user and offer strong security guarantees. Passwords remain the dominant mode of SSH authentication, despite their well known flaws such as phishing and reuse. SSH's custom key-based authentication protocol can alleviate these issues but remains vulnerable to key theft. Additionally, it has poor usability, with even knowledgeable users leaking key material and failing to verify fingerprints. Hence, effective key management remains a critical open area in SSH security. In contrast, WebAuthn is a modern authentication standard designed to replace passwords, managing keys on behalf of the user. As a web API, this standard cannot integrate with SSH directly. We propose a framework to integrate WebAuthn with SSH servers, by using UNIX pluggable authentication modules (PAM). Our approach is backwards-compatible, supports stock SSH servers and requires no new software client-side. It offers protection for cryptographic material at rest, resistance to key leaks, phishing protection, privacy protection and attestation capability. None of these properties are offered by passwords nor traditional SSH keys. We validate these advantages with a structured, conceptual security analysis. We develop a prototype implementation and conduct a user study to quantify the security advantages of our proposal, testing our prototype with 40 SSH users.
