Embedded devices are becoming ubiquitous in both domestic and commercial environments. Although smartphones, tablets, and video game consoles are all labeled by their primary function, most of these devices offer additional features and are capable of additional interactivity. Given the proprietary nature of such devices in terms of hardware and software and the protection mechanisms incorporated into these systems, it is and will continue to be extremely difficult to use “traditional digital forensics” methodologies to access storage media and acquire data for analysis. This paper examines how consumer law may be stifling research that the forensic community could ultimately depend upon to examine devices.
Visualising data is an important part of the forensic analysis process. Many cell phone forensic tools have specialised visualisation components, but are as of yet able to tackle questions concerning the broad spectrum of social media communication sources. Visualisation tools tend to be stove-piped, it is difficult to take information seen in one visualisation tool and obtain a different perspective in another tool. If an interesting relationship is observed, needing to be explored in more depth, the process has to be reiterated by manually generating a subset of the data, converting it into the correct format, and invoking the new application. This paper describes a cloud-based data storage architecture and a set of interactive visualisation tools developed to allow for a more straightforward exploratory analysis. This approach developed in this tool suite is demonstrated using a case study consisting of social media data extracted from two mobile devices.
The student teacher relationship is changing towards a more digital environment. It enables a new form of innovative learning, but is not without its challenges. Not only does the learner have different views on how to communicate, but the educators must also make use of technology they might not be so familiar with. This paper presents experiences, problems overcome and identified challenges ahead in digital education. It bases itself on experience from more than 15 years in e-learning from vocational, secondary and university college level, and we will use real-life examples to discuss best practices when it comes to using text, pictures and videos in an online educational environment in a way that best supports the teaching environment. We will through this paper present the view from the lectures perspective, both on teaching environments and technology. Traditional teaching centers around a teacher standing at a black board or a projector presenting directly in front of students. This is not directly available in an e-learning environment. In contrast, one of the most significant challenges with e-learning is that students online do not have the teacher / instructor available for questions at any given time in class. To avoid students sitting back with questions, the online environment should use text, pictures and video in such a way that it answers all questions students might think of - and that it accounts for most situations that arises when students are following instructions. In addition to this we have also implemented a hybrid form of teaching, using live-stream and real-time chats in order to bring back the possibilities for students to ask questions during lectures. This will include the online students in the campus-based environment, thereby propose best practice guidelines for online education and training.
Tools created by the computer hacking community to circumvent security protection on hard drives can have unintentional consequences for digital forensics. Tools originally developed to circumvent Microsoft's Xbox 360 hard drive protection can be used, independently of the Xbox 360 system, to change the reported size/model of a hard drive enabling criminals to hide data from digital forensic software and hardware. The availability of such concealment methods raises the risk of evidence being overlooked, particularly as triage and on-scene inspections of digital media become more common. This paper presents two case studies demonstrating the process using Western Digital and Fujitsu branded drives. It outlines the difficulties faced by standard computer forensic analysis techniques in revealing the true nature of the drive and finally provides suggestions for extra checks to reveal this type of concealment.
Equal participation for people with special needs is an important objective in education politics. Governments have a strong emphasis on enabling education for all citizens. The trend of using e-learning both for on campus and remote delivery of students has the potential of enabling new opportunities for people who previously faced challenges following education. On the other hand, providing online education bears the risk of creating new barriers. This paper examines different stages of providing educational content and delivering teaching material online. This is based on practical experiences from Noroff University College providing a bachelor degree in a security related area. Based on both practical experiences and state of the art literature review, we analyze potential accessibility barriers, and investigate how the barriers can be identified and removed based on state of the art accessibility measurement techniques. Consequently, this paper is a first step towards a methodology on assessing e-learning content based on accessibility. This methodology would assist others in obtaining an overview concerning the degree of accessibility of their own learning materials.
