Investigations of the abundances of He/sup 3/, Li, Be, and B on the surfaces of stars and in primary cosmic radiation are reviewed. Three possible explanations of the results are considered: (1) There may be cosmic-ray sources in which the He/sup 3/ abundance is very high. (2) Cosmic rays may be ejected from the surfaces of magnetically active stars in which He/sup 3/ may be produced by surface nuclear activity. (3) If the cosmic-ray abundance of He/sup 3/ is found to vary with energy in such a way as to make it possible to explain both it and the Li, Be, and B abundances wholly by spallation of heavy primary particles in the interstellar medium, then the problem concerns the source of a high abundance of heavy particles.
