Prospecting through botanical collections' has lead us to the discovery of several sources of resistance to Myzus persicae, both within the peach species (clone S2678 and Rubira) and among close species (P. davidiana var potanini, and P. cerasifera clone P2993). The clone S2678 (Weeping Flower Peach) was chosen among these different sources of resistance as it could also be used to develop a weeping variety in the same breeding programme.Myzus persicae does not establish colonies on S2678. Besides, its bites induce the appearance of characteristic necrotic areas (hypersensitivity reaction) which make it easy to distinguish resistant trees from sensitive ones.To start with, the resistance mode of heredity was studied by creating F1 and F2 generations from the resistant parent crossed with a sensitive one? Redhaven. The resistance character is dominant and monogenic ( symbols Rm1/rm1).Breeding was then continued to improve fruit quality by using the cv. Early Sungrand as a parent to introduce the nectarine character. Following five generations of breeding, the first marketing selections were obtained.
This work relies upon the comparison of the timing of aphid behaviour when young plants are infested for the first or second time by the fundatrigeniae apterae of Myzus persicae. The mechanisms of plant resistance are initiated by the feeding punctures and evolve even in the absence of aphids. The initiation stage is short, around 2 h, and followed by latency, around 18 h. After aphid removal the systemic acquired resistance decreases and disappears in the following 48 h. The systemic acquired resistance appears before the emergence of local discolourations and necrotic areas restricted to the aphid feeding punctures. Mechanical wounding failed to initiate the systemic acquired resistance. The results are discussed on the basis of the present knowledge of induced resistances and hypersensitivity to arthropods with piercing mouthparts, mites and aphids.
The mode of heredity of resistance to Myzus persicae was established in the peach using a resistant parent S2678:47 and a susceptible parent S1161:12. This resistance follows a simple genetic determinism: it is dominant and monogenic (Symbols Rm1, rm1). No link was found between the locus determining aphid resistance and the loci determining weeping shape (Pl, pl), corky triangle (T, t), flower shape (Sh, sh), and fruit flesh colour (Y, y). Aphid resistance was maintained over 4 consecutive generations and has not been overcome yet. This study is part of a breeding programme to create varieties resistant to Myzus persicae.

AbstractSharka caused by plum pox virus (PPV) is a disease spread in France since 1970, and causing severe damages essentially on apricot but also on plums and peach.Cherry is generally considered as not infected by PPV. Experimental transmissions by chip budding or aphids allowed to show that 3 isolates of PPV can multiply inside three cherry rootstocks (P. Mahaleb cv.‘SL 64′, P. avium cv.‘F 12‐1′, and P. avium*P. pseudocerasus cv. ‘Colt') (Tables 1 and 2).But generally, the virus remained localized to the infection site and disappeared quickly (Table 3). Typical symptoms of chlorotic ringspot or vein clearing are also limited to the leaves probed by the aphids. The fact that no translocation was detected is discussed.
