1037 tumor on the host's biochemistry than is a study of the enzymes of the organ possessing the neoplasm. It would be most important to control these experiments with observations on animals with various non-neoplastic lesions. While the chemical alterations discussed in this present volume undoubtedly represent important changes in cell metabolism, they still remain, in the majority of cases, isolated facts, the mechanism of their initiation being unknown. In this connection it is peculiar that more work has not been done on the biochemistry of cancers of known etiology. In such tumors it might be easier to relate these changes to the presence of some causative agent, such as a virus. While this material would not necessarily aid one in learning how these alterations fit into carcinogenesis, it might give an inkling as to how these changes are brought about. There is no question but that this book stimulates thought and imagination, and presents much material which suggests problems for further investigation. These points plus the excellent bibliography make this volume a valuable contribution to oncology. A writer of textbooks must surely be aware of the fact that by some mischance his cherished text will finally reach the hands of some person wholly unfamilar with the subject matter and who feels, none the less, that some comment must be made. Undertaking to read a few pages of this book convinced the present reader that none of it was to be skipped. Furthermore, it became obvious that most if not all of the current jargon which makes up Medical writing can claim but a very uncertain ancestry. This text describes the derivation of many words whose history has been neglected. It is really a fascinating story and shows great erudition on the part of the author, nevertheless one becomes somewhat surprised to read "The parotid gland (para, beside, and otidos, ear) was a common sight of terminal infection in the epidemics of the Middle Ages, and for that reason the word came to mean an abscess." Or perhaps this is correct after all.
The account of Richardson for instance is so inflated in this manner that one searches about in vain for any significant contribution of his. In other sections over -dramatization may make a quite erroneous impression upon the uninformed reader, as in "Death as Anesthetist" and the horrifying account of curare. However, interest is well sustained throughout the narrative, and while the serious student of history may frequently be irritated, the less critical will read it with avidity. Obviously it is 'for the latter that the book is written, and in this respect it fulfills its purpose. This text of over eight hundred pages covers a wide field of biological material and is well enough balanced to make it difficult to select parts for special mention. The usual consideration of protoplasm, plant and animal tissues, and survey of animal phyla is followed by one hundred and fifty pages devoted to the comparative anatomy and physiology of invertebrate and vertebrate animals on the basis of their organ systems. The sections on economic importance of animals and plants are necessarily brief and chiefly suggestive for further reading. The section on biochemical and biophysical phenomena is an innovation in biology texts, but pertinent to the rest of the material. The section on genetics is good and there is an unusually clear and up-to-date description of human embryology. A rather extensive glossary completes the book. The itext is written in clear and simple language, with emphasis throughout on human biology. It is surprising that so much material has been covered so comprehensively within one-volume. The Beagle, FitzRoy, master, sails once more. What a measure of comfort and reassurance-these letters and Notebook excerpts would have given the small boy of rural New England of fifty years ago, when on at least one day of the week the doctrine of creation was made amply clear (if emphasis ever renders anything clear) and when The Origin of Species proved pretty heavy going despite its fascination. The difficulty did not rest in acceptance of the theory of evolution, but rather in comprehending how one mind could encompass and align so many directive forces to form-a composite picture. The difficulty of the small boy was due to he fact that an assumption was made (gratuitous, of course) that Darwin just sat down and
could delineate Cushing's character and characteristics quite as well as has Cushing himself. The reader may well wish that more of such material had been included. The book is singularly free of observable technical errors, the most significant one is the statement on page 88 where we find that Cushing sailed from Boston on the 30th of June to arrive (says Cushing) "in Liverpool harbor on June 1 1." It is to be noted that the author ends his preface with a quotation, a very happily expressed quotation, which appeared in print in 1924 and are the words with which Harvey Cushing closed his preface to the Life of Sir William Os/er. 127 Goddard, is a clear and useful summary of many of the facts and theories relating to the respiration of cells and tissues. Section 7 (79 pages) by Wallace 0. Fenn is a discussion of the general problem of contractility. Section 8 (87 pages), by Rudolf Hober, is concerned with passive penetration and active transfer of metabolites in animal and plant tissues. As is admitted in the preface, there has been a certain amount of selection of subjects discussed, with the entire omission of others even though they be of current interest. The lack of reference to the important dynamic school of metabolism, as represented by Schoenheimer, is a case in point. The preparation of the book has evidently been carried on through many difficulties due to the late war. Few of the references cited are later than 1942, although in several instances references to more recent reviews would have been more valuable. The book is, nevertheless, to be recommended without reservation as a source of information on the topics covered and as a source of new problems. The binding and printing are worthy of comment. Although the book has extensive subject and author indices, omission from the latter of most of the references cited in the tables and figures was noted. This little volume has both charm and an apt title: "The Way of an Investigator." This is quite a different story than would have been the case had the title read "The Way of the Investigator." For, though all investigators could well pattern after the author in his work and in his philosophy, many workers come far from doing so. Failure, as well as success, is the usual lot of the one who would search for the unknown fact, perchance more failures than successes, and "hunches" come in many guises as to quality, and some are quite frankly misbranded. Though somewhat autobiographical, the book offers more of Cannon's point of view of life and living, of his way of thinking, and of his method of working.

Data so obtained were then supplemented with results of clinical studies, and from the whole, conclusions were drawn which are convincing, both because of the straightforward nature of the experiments themselves and the logical, orderly manner in which they are presented. The phenomena dealt with here in particular, the metabolic actions of epinephrine, its relation to thyroid activity, and interrelationships between hormones and vitamins-have all claimed the attention of American investigators within recent years. Consequendy, this little monograph will interest those who study endocrine physiology and nutrition, as well as physicians who care for patients with hyperthyroidism. JOHN R. BROBECK
A fourteenth edition (semicentennial) of Osler's classic has just been released. Again the task of revision and editing was undertaken by the able hand of Henry Christian, who, as a former pupil of Osler and one of the chief exponents of the Oslerian tradition in clinical teaching, seems peculiarly suited to the task of preserving the nature and spirit of the book as the original author might have wished them. Critical sampling of the content by the reviewer would indicate that the present edition is better written and more completely up-to-date than was the previous, thirteenth, edition. It continues to be a really good book for practitioners and students of medicine. A list of key references for more extensive reading follows most of the topics. A. J. GEIGER.

This book is designed for use in undergraduate courses. The whole field of bacteriology is considered, without undue weight on any particular subdivision, in an attempt to give the student a broad and sound knowledge of the subject as a branch of science in itself, rather than as merely a tool useful in other sciences. The book is logically arranged, concisely and readably written, and well illustrated. It should serve admirably as an introduction to general bacteriology, although its elementary nature should be stressed. PHILIP B. COWLES.
The information available relating to the several phases of the problem of specificity in serological reactions has been thoroughly canvassed by Landsteiner,3 who has prepared an admirable critical statement of the results accumulated from the days of Uhlenhuth and of Nuttall down to the year 1936. From his text it is evident that, by various technics, it is readily possible to distinguish serologically between antigenic substances that are, indeed, very closely related. Species differences can be detected with relative ease, and by appropriate methods it can be shown that there are antigenic differences among individuals composing a single species. But the results of attempts to develop a technic competent to differentiate races have not been generally successful, if we except those racial peculiarities based on the blood group antigens which have significance only when subjected to a statistical treatment. Wiener,4 also, reaches a similar conclusion as to the general failure to disclose race-specific antigens. In fact, he states, Attempts have also been made to produce sera which would serve to differentiate the bloods of different races of the human species. Thus far all such attempts have been unsuccessful. If such a serological differentiation of human races could be made, it would be of great value to anthropology and to forensic medicine. It thus seems useless to cite the many authors who have, prior to 1935 and 1936, worked in this field, with results occasionally suggestive, but more often wholly negative, and in all cases devoid of practical value.
