During the week of June 6, 1988, three friends of the late James Thorp of the USDA-SCS and Earlham College, Indiana met in Beijing, People's Republic of China to talk about soils and Thorp. Dr. Li Lianjie, an 80-yrold soil scientist, had been trained in China by Thorp, and subsequently in the USA by Guy D. Smith, and Eric Winters about 40 to 50 yr ago. Dr. Li chaired a seminar at the Dep. of Geography at the Univ. of Beijing on June 6. Francis D. Hole presented a lecture (with slides) on Soil Landscape Analysis, with the help of a translator from the same department. Dr. James Forsythe, petroleum geologist from Louisiana and a nephew of ,Thorp, was also present. Dr. Forsythe presented Li with a miniature silver tiling spade, en scribed with Dr. Thorp's name at the time of his retirement from Earlham College 20 yr ago. Hole presented Li with an Antigo silt loam Tshirt, commemorating the Wisconsin State Soil. Forsythe and Hole were on a 3-wk tour of China with an alumni group from Earlham College, led by the college's Asain history professor, Jackson Bailey, also a friend of Thorp. Dr. Li told the following anecdotes from his soil survey experience in Illinois. One morning he entered a farm and began to turn a hand auger into the soil. The farmer came striding over to him, and called out jovially from a distance: "Watcha think you're doin'? Drillin' to China?" On reaching Li, the farmer was astonished to see a Chinese gentleman. "Well, you are Chinese already!" The farmer was very pleased to have a soil scientist from China on his land.
AbstractA new diagnostic horizon, the lithoplinthic horizon, is proposed for an indurated ironstone that contains many irregular, tubular, channels filled with fine earth, that conduct water and permit plant roots to reach underlying horizons. It is hard rock for many engineering interpretations and soil for interpretations for plant growth. It is proposed that, if there are no overlying diagnostic horizons other than an ochric epipedon, the soils should be classified as lithoplinthic subgroups of Orthents. Use of family classes of particle size and depth is proposed, but not of mineralogy.
AbstractThis map shows the distribution of the principal kinds of soil in the USA as classified in the system currently used by the soil survey. The map can be used only for comparing soils of large areas. It has 331 units defined mostly as associations of phases of great groups. A brief legend on the front of the map explains the colors that distinguish soil orders, lists the symbols for dominant great groups and special features, and includes an introduction to the nomenclature. A detailed legend on the back of the map is arranged alphabetically by great groups within a suborder of each order. The legend provides general definitions for the orders, suborders, and great groups, present dominant land use for the suborders, and approximate equivalent former names for the great groups. The map, scale 1:7,500,000, size 48 by 71 cm, was compiled on the National Atlas base with an Albers equal area projection. The soil information is current as of December 1967. The base map shows state boundaries, major drainages, principal cities, and state experiment stations. The soil map, in color, is for sale by the U. S. Geological Survey, 1200 S. Eads Street, Arlington, Va. 22202.

The term “Braunerde” was introduced in 1905 by Ramann in the second edition of his textbook Bodenkunde. Since then the term has been used in many countries. It has become more and more evident that the name has been applied to a number of soils, often very different both in genesis and properties. This study of Braunerde has been limited to Europe and the United States. Generally, within the past few years, there has been a close correspondence between the soil classifications in the United States and in Western Europe, but the correspondence has not always been reflected in the names used. The names “Braunerde” or “Brown Forest soils'’ have, during the past fifty years, been defined and used quite differently by various authors. Because the same names have been used for unlike soils the literature is confusing, and the results of experience reported have been misinterpreted. The current American concept of the Brown Forest soil is very narrow and is different from the European. Usage is not the same in all European countries, but in general the concept of Brown Forest soil or Braunerde is much broader than the American and includes the American concept.
