Abstract Spectrophotometric observations have been made of the nebulosity surrounding the Seyfert (or N) galaxy 3C 120, as well as of the nucleus. Observations of the nebulosity reveal an extensive network of H II regions characterized by a high ionization level, which, it is argued, is due to photoionizations by the nucleus. The O/H and N/O abundance ratios in this gas, at least as far out as 8 kpc from the nucleus, must be within a factor of 20 of the solar values. The velocity field of this gas is very chaotic, but the systematic gas velocities, relative to the nucleus, are mostly positive to one side of an axis passing through the nucleus at P.A. 72 deg and mostly negative on the other side. The position angle of this axis is consistent with the direction (P.A. 65 deg) along which the compact radio source in the nucleus is expanding, but it is about 45 deg away from the major or minor axes of the fainter elliptical structure visible on previously published broad-band direct plates. Abstract This paper presents optical, infrared, and radio observations of the radio source 1400 + 162, which has been identified with a neutral stellar object. This source is classified as a BL Lacertae object based on the absence of broad emission features, its high degree of optical polarization, and its steep optical continuum. A weak narrow emission line is identified as the 3727-A feature of forbidden O II at z = 0.244, in agreement with the redshift of the nearest and brightest galaxy in a small adjacent group. The radio source 1400 + 162 differs from the sources associated with the majority of BL Lacertae objects in that, even at high frequencies, a significant fraction of its emission arises in extended components. The implications of the properties of 1400 + 162 for the interpretation of the physical conditions in BL Lacertae objects are briefly discussed. We present spectrophotometric observations of four objects identified with the Molonglo radio sources 0758+120, 0824+110, 0830+115, and 0938+119. All are QSOs with z>2. The sources 0758+120, 0824+110, and 0830+115 have previously unreported redshifts z=2.66, 2.29, and 2.97, respectively. The optical and radio spectra of these objects are compared with the spectra of other known high-redshift QSOs. (AIP)
