The β-ray detected nuclear magnetic resonance (β-NMR) of a short lived-nucleus 17N (I = 1/2, T1/2 = 4.173 s) in liquid H2O and CH3NO2 has been performed. A π-pulse method was applied to obtain sharp NMR lines, from which the ratio of the Larmor frequencies of 17N in CH3NO2 and 1H was determined to be ν[17N in CH3NO2]/ν[1H2O] = 0.1265751 ± 0.0000019. Two resonance lines were observed for 17N in H2O with the relative frequency shifts of –(2.33 ± 0.37) × 10−4 and (2.91 ± 0.27) × 10−4 referenced to 17N in CH3NO2.
Interaction cross sections (sigma(I)) and reaction cross sections(sigma(R)) are physical quantities which are strongly related to the nuclear size. In our previous study of sigma(I) for Ne isotopes, the deformation features of neutron-rich Ne isotopes in the so-called "island of inversion" region have been successfully observed, and also the formation of the deformed halo structure in Ne-31 has been indicated. In this study, sigma(I) for F19-27 up to the vicinity of the island of inversion have been measured at around 240A MeV using BigRIPS at RIBF, RIKEN. Our preliminary results are slightly larger than A(1/3) systematics and some of the data could be explained by nuclear deformation.
The question of whether charge-changing interactions can be used to probe point-proton radii of nuclei remains unanswered. Charge-changing cross sections, sigma(cc), were systematically investigated using stable and unstable nuclear beams of intermediate-energy. The ratios of the experimental sigma(cc) values to the calculated ones obtained from a phenomenological Glauber-type model analysis are found to be nearly constant in a broad range of Z/N for light neutron-rich nuclei. This enables the determination of density distributions, i.e., the radii of protons tightly bound in nuclei. To test the applicability of the present method to all nuclei in the nuclear chart, extensive measurements were performed for medium-mass nuclei ranging from Z = 18 to 32. The present study suggests the potential capability of a new experimental approach for exploring exotic nuclei.
