In this study, the signalment, clinical signs, histopathological findings and treatment outcome of four dogs with chronic ulcerative paronychia, that presented clinical and microscopic characteristics of the mucocutaneous variant of canine chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus are described. The Greyhounds in the case series had a symmetric claw fold involvement, either exclusively or as major clinical presentation.
In this case report, a dog with clinical and histopathological features of paraneoplastic pemphigus is described. A Lhasa apso with severe ulcerative oral and predominant facial skin disease had a thoracic mass histopathologically diagnosed as a thymoma. A concurrent disease-association was suspected. Cytologic examination of the oral lesions provided early clues to the dog’s ulcerative condition.

Early skin lesions were characterized by intensely pruritic, erythematous and firm intact papules and plaques. The lesions enlarged and evolved quickly into coalescing nodular target shaped lesions with central exudation, ulceration and necrosis. The lesion distribution pattern was mainly the neck and the dorsolateral trunk. Oral involvement was observed in one dog. The histopathology was characterized by eosinophilic dermatitis and panniculitis targeting dermal and subcutaneous blood vessels with secondary involvement of hair follicles. While causation remained unproven in these cases, a hypersensitivity reaction to medications or other foreign antigens was suspected.

In dit artikel wordt bij drie honden necrotiserende eosinofiele dermatitis beschreven met een acuut ontstaan en snel verloop. De eerste huidletsels werden gekenmerkt door intens jeukende erythemateuze en stevig aanvoelende intacte papels en plaques. De letsels werden snel groter en evolueerden tot samenvloeiende targetoïde nodulen met centrale exsudatie, ulceratie en necrose. De letsels kwamen hoofdzakelijk voor op de hals en op de dorsolaterale romp. Eén hond vertoonde ook orale letsels. Het histopathologisch beeld toonde in de drie gevallen eosinofiele dermatitis en panniculitis gericht op de dermale en subcutane bloedvaten met secundaire aantasting van de haarfollikels. Een overgevoeligheidsreactie op medicatie of op andere lichaamsvreemde antigenen kunnen mogelijk de oorzaak zijn geweest.
In deze casuïstiek wordt een geval van neutrofiele en ulceratieve dermatitis beschreven bij een canis vulgaris. De aandoening werd beschouwd als een atypisch geval van pyoderma gangrenosum. De hond had een uitgesproken pustulaire eruptie en vertoonde meer oppervlakkige ulceraties. Ook ontbrak bij deze letsels de voor pyoderma gangrenosum karakteristieke begeleidende pijn. De diagnose van pyoderma gangrenosum werd gesteld als een diagnose per uitsluitsel. De hond vertoonde een uitste-kende respons op een behandeling met ciclosporine (Cyclavance, Virbac, Leuven, Belgium).
In deze casus wordt een variant van degeneratieve granulomateuze murale folliculitis met cytotoxische dermatitis beschreven bij een hond aangeboden met multifocale, goed omschreven, annulaire alopecie met een korstige periferie. De mogelijk medicatie-geïnduceerde huidaandoening vertoonde een uitstekende respons op een orale behandeling met ciclosporine.
In deze casuïstiek wordt een opvallend pijnlijke, ulceratieve dermatitis overeenstemmend met pyoderma gangrenosum beschreven bij een 2,5 jaar oude, intacte, vrouwelijke maltezer. De hond had een nasale stridor en vertoonde onregelmatige ulceraties met verheven inflammatoire randen op de lenden, staart en achterste ledematen. Er was geen respons op diverse antibiotica. Het histopathologisch beeld werd gekenmerkt door diepe kratervormige ulceraties met een uitgesproken neutrofiel infiltraat, onderliggend en aan de randen van de verzweringen. Een behandeling met enkel prednisolone (Kela Laboratories, Sint-Niklaas, Belgium) resulteerde in een complete regressie van de nasale symptomen en huidletsels.
Caniene recurrente flankalopecia wordt klassiek gekenmerkt door een niet-inflammatoire alopecia met onbekende etiologie. Deze dermatose wordt getypeerd door unieke huidsymptomen. Alhoewel de aandoening relatief frequent voorkomt in het noordelijk halfrond en dus ook in België, is er slechts beperkte informatie over te vinden in de literatuur. Het doel van dit overzichtsartikel is om enerzijds een samenvatting te geven van de literatuur en anderzijds de verschillende klinische presentaties die herkend worden in de dagelijkse praktijk maar niet vaak beschreven worden in de literatuur, te documenteren.
Canine recurrent flank alopecia is a non-inflammatory, non-scarring alopecia of unknown etiology and has a visually striking clinical presentation. Although this disease entity is relatively common in the northern hemisphere, there is only scant information in the literature regarding case descriptions. The aim of this article was to review the literature and to describe clinical presentations recognized in practice, which are not always extensively documented in the literature.
An 8.5-month-old neutered male cat was presented with an itching linear lesion on the right hindlimb that extended from the caudomedial tarsus to the ventral part of the tail base. The lesion consisted of multiple, thick, cone-shaped, yellow-brown cruts and alopecia. Cytological examination of impression smears revealed numerous eosinophils and some mast cells. Histopathological examination of skin biopsies confirmed the diagnosis of perforating dermatitis with typically vertically orientated bundles of collagen and an eosinophilic dermatitis. Treatment with dexamethasone gave slight improvement. When dexamethasone was combined with topical mometasone therapy, the lesions disappeared completely.
Een jonge kattin werd na een periode van niezen en conjunctivitis aangeboden voor onderhuidse zwellingen op de linkerzijde van de kop en hyperemische conjunctiva met protrusie van het derde ooglid. Het onderzoek van de mondholte toonde een zwelling aan labiaal van de gebitselementen en in de pterygopalatine fossa. De linker submandibulaire lymfeknoop was opgezet. De kat niesde af en toe maar er was geen neusvloei. De huidletsels hadden een opvallende gele kleur. Het cytologisch onderzoek van de huidzwelling toonde een pyogranulomateuze ontsteking aan met eosinofielen. Alleen een diepe bemonstering bevatte representatief weefsel voor cytologisch, histopathologisch en mycologisch onderzoek. Op basis van de morfologische kenmerken van de mycologische cultuur werd Aspergillus sectie fumigatus gediagnosticeerd en met moleculaire technologie geïdentificeerd als Aspergillus viridinutans. De definitieve diagnose was sino-orbitale aspergillose met een uitgebreide subcutane invasie. Gezien het ernstig progressief verloop ondanks behandeling werd de kat geëuthanaseerd.
The objective of this study is to describe the normal histological appearance of the dorsoproximal aspect of the sagittal ridge of the third metacarpal/metatarsal bone in young Warmblood horses, and to compare it to the different radiographic variations (irregular, indentation, lucency, notch) described at this level. A total of 25 metacarpo/metatarsophalangeal joints of 12 Warmblood horses were used. Five samples of each radiographically described group were selected for histological processing. Each category was compared with the normal control group. Each group showed a bone cortex, covered by hyaline cartilage and longitudinally aligned collagen fibres covered by loosely organized connective tissue proximally. The normal and irregular group showed a smooth bone cortex. In the indentation and lucency group, a depression in the cortex was detected. The notch group presented an expansion of the cortex. The collagen fibres and connective tissue were located in the depression in the indentation group whereas the location varied in the lucency and notch group. The radiologic detected differences are translated into detectable histological differences. Further research is warranted to determine whether these variations are developmental or congenital and to evaluate their potential influence on the joint function during hyperextension.
After a period of sneezing and conjunctivitis, a young female cat was presented with leftsided facial subcutaneous swellings and ocular disease characterized by a hyperemic conjunctiva with protrusion of the third eyelid. In the oral cavity, swellings were present labial of the premolar teeth and in the pterygopalatine fossa. The left submandibular lymphnode was enlarged. The cat sneezed from time to time but there was no nasal discharge. The skin lesions had a distinctive yellow color. Cytology of affected skin revealed pyogranulomatous inflammation with eosinophils. Only deep sampling of the skin contained representative tissue for cytologic, histopathologic and mycologic examination. Aspergillus section fumigatus was diagnosed on morphologic aspects of the mycologic culture and the fungus was identified by molecular technology as Aspergillus viridinutans. The definite diagnosis was sino-orbital aspergillosis with extensive subcutaneous invasion. Due to progressive disease despite therapy, the cat was euthanized.
The metacarpo-/metatarsophalangeal joint is a high motion joint and is therefore prone to be injured.Lameness attributable to the metacarpo-/metatarsophalangeal joint is a frequent cause of early retirement from athletic activity in horses and should therefore be detected as early as possible.The basis of the examination for lameness remains the clinical examination, including a complete motion examination in which the lameness is unambiguously localized by means of local anesthesia.A combination of radiography and ultrasonography is often sufficient for visualizing the lesions.However, in the absence of clear radiological or ultrasonographical findings, more advanced imaging modalities, such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), are necessary.The choice of technique largely depends on the tissue characteristics of the expected lesion, the cost restraints of the owner, and the willingness to take the risk of general anesthesia. Summary Objectives: To describe the radiographic appearance of the dorsoproximal aspect of the sagittal ridge of the third metacarpal/metatarsal bone in Warmblood horses. Methods: The lateromedial radiographic projections of the metacarpo-/metatarsophalangeal joints performed on horses as a part of stallion selection were used. The dorsal aspect of the distal third metacarpal/metatarsal bone was divided in two areas. The appearance of the bone surface in area I was classified as normal, irregular, notch, indentation and lucency. For area II, the categories were normal, irregular, depression or lucency and flattening of the sagittal ridge. Other abnormalities at the dorsal aspect were also noted. Results: In area I, 51.5% of the ridges appeared normal, 19.3% were irregular, 8.9% had a notch, 8.1% had a lucency, and 12.2% had an indentation. In 1.2% of the horses a fragment was present, and in 1.7% a fragment was suspected.In area II, 90.6% of the metacarpo-/metatarsophalangeal joints were normal, 6.2% were irregular, 2.9% showed a depression or lucency, and the sagittal ridge in 0.2% was flattened. A fragment was present in 0.3%, and suspected in 0.4%. Clinical significance: Morphological variation is present at the dorsal aspect of the metacarpo-/metatarsophalangeal joint in young Warmblood stallions. These various aspects should be recognised and described in horses presented for prepurchase examination. Four cases in cattle of omental herniation through an acquired omental rent are described. Clinical signs were indistinguishable from other causes of mechanical ileus and exploratory laparotomy was necessary to establish a diagnosis. In all cases a variably sized portion of jejunal loops was obstructed in an omental rent in the deep layer of the greater omentum. In two cases simple reduction was possible, and in one case incision of the hernial ring was necessary before reduction could be performed. Resection was necessary only in a calf, in which the incarceration was complicated by severe abomasal distension and local peritonitis. In all four cases the omental rent was closed by a serosa-serosa suture. Three cases made an uneventful recovery and returned to normal production, but one of these animals died three months postoperatively from an unknown cause. The calf was euthanased two days postoperatively because of persistent ileus.
The objective of the present study was to determine clinical and arthroscopic characteristics associated with dorsoproximal proximal phalanx (P1) fragments in Warmblood horses, as well as to examine their histopathological appearance. One hundred sixty-eight fragments were removed from 150 fetlocks of 117 Warmblood horses. Details of signalment and results of clinical examination were collected prior to surgery. After arthroscopic fragment removal and joint evaluation for synovial and/or cartilage abnormalities, the fragments were measured and evaluated histopathologically. The vast majority of the fragments (95.2%) were found medially, without predilection for front or hind limbs. In 10% of the joints, more than one fragment was present. The mean size of the fragments was 6.8 +/- 2.6 mm. Only eight horses presented fetlock-related lameness. Horses of seven years of age and older (OR = 13.32; p = 0.033) and the presence of more than one fragment (OR = 11.12; p = 0.016) were significantly associated with lameness. Arthroscopic evaluation revealed one or more abnormalities in 50.7% of the joints. On histopathology, osteochondral fragments presented as a bony center covered with smooth hyaline cartilage on one side and some fibrous tissue on the other side. No clear histopathological signs were indicating precisely their origin. In Warmblood horses with dorsoproximal P1 fragments, the age (seven years and older) and the presence of more than one fragment in a fetlock significantly increased the risk of lameness. The osteochondral dorsoproximal P1 fragments could be defined as a developmental orthopaedic disease.
