AbstractFormulae are developed for finding statistics to describe the latest state of a climatic time series without assuming that the character of the series will remain unchanged with time. The choice of formulae is discussed, and reasons given for the parameter settings which make the operations specific. Applications of the technique are illustrated by the extracts from analyses of British records covering most of the years 1821 to 1980, six being of rainfall and two of temperature.

An account is given of the strategic planning and development of the software needed by one scientist to support a 3‐year research investigation involving judicious use of an electronic computer. An attempt is made to establish principles on which software development should proceed if the lone worker is to be able to produce something near the largest possible output of useful work in the three years.

AbstractThe problems of achieving efficiency in middle weight computation are discussed with reference to experience in the Meteorological Office with the operational and research computations which support work on long range weather forecasting. An account is given of the reasoning behind the latest form of the METOCODE system, and of the objectives it is intended to fulfil.

AbstractA set of empirical orthogonal functions is produced which enable the large‐scale features of the 500 mb topography over the Northern Hemisphere to be represented with near optimal efficiency. The more important functions are described. Some of the properties of the coefficients of these functions which best represent the 500 mb charts for each day of the years 1965 to 1967 are summarized. The question of the number of functions required to obtain the most satisfactory representation of the 500 mb fields is discussed.
