Paguristione uniuropodus gen. n., sp. n. infests Paguristes sp. in the East China Sea. Paguristione gen. n. differs from the closely related genera Pseudione and Pagurion by its females having indistinct lateral plates on the last two pleomeres and its male with a long tapering pleon of six pleomeres, lacking both pleopoda and uropoda.
Hansen (1897), dealing with only fragmentary material, erected the genus Bathygyge with B. grandis as its type-species as one of the earliest bopyrid species known from the eastern Pacific Ocean. Bathygyge grandis was first recorded as a parasite of the deep-water crangonid shrimp Glyphocrangon spinulosa Faxon from off the coast of Acapulco, Mexico. It has since been reported from several different localities worldwide as a parasite of other species of Glyphocrangon, but it has never been properly described. Material that recently became available from near the type-locality has made it possible to correct that situation.

The bopyrid isopod species Rhopalione sinensis Markham, 1990, is recorded for only the second time, from a new locality in China outside Hong Kong, the type-locality. This is also the first finding of the male R. sinensis, which is herein described. Its host, Arcotheres sinensis (Shen, 1932) is a new record. A review of the four known species of Rhopalione Pérez, 1920, an updated diagnosis of the genus and a key to species are provided.
Three bopyrid species belonging to two genera infesting hermit crabs from the South China Sea are reported. This is the first record of the genus Pagurion Shiino, 1933, in Chinese waters, where it is represented by two species: Pagurion tuberculata Shiino, 1933, infesting Dardanus aspersus (Berthold, 1846), and Pagurion arrosor n. sp., infesting Dardanus arrosor (Herbst, 1796). The female of Pagurion arrosor differs from that of P. tuberculata in the structure of its barbula, pleopods, and terminal pleomere. The first Chinese record of the genus Pseudionella Shiino, 1949, is P. spiropaguri n. sp. found infesting Spiropagurus profundorum Alcock, 1905, S. spiriger (De Haan, 1849), and Spiropagurus sp. Pseudionella spiropaguri is contrasted with the other four previously described species of the genus.
The parasitic isopod family Bopyridae contains approximately 600 species that parasitize calanoid copepods as larvae and decapod crustaceans as adults. In total, 105 species of these parasites (~18% of all bopyrids) are documented from Recent squat lobsters and porcelain crabs in the superfamilies Chirostyloidea and Galatheoidea. Aside from one endoparasite, all the bopyrids reported herein belong to the branchially infesting subfamily Pseudioninae. Approximately 29% (67 of 233 species) of pseudionine species parasitize squat lobsters and 16% (38 of 233 species) parasitize porcelain crabs. Bopyrids are found in five of six squat lobster families (lacking only in Kiwaidae) and the sole porcelain crab family Porcellanidae. Six pseudionine genera are shared between squat lobsters and porcelain crabs. The deepest bathymetric records of bopyrids on squat lobster hosts (5210 m), and records of swellings interpreted as indications of bopyrid presence in fossil host taxa are noted. Four nomenclatural issues are resolved and the proper form of citation for the French zoologist C. E. Hesse is provided. Biogeographic distributions for squat lobsters and porcelain crabs are discussed and compared to those of hermit crabs.
The introduced Asian parasitic bopyrid isopod, Orthione griffenis, was first discovered on the Pacific coast of North America in Washington in 1988 and next in California in 1992. The range of Orthione presently extends from British Columbia to Baja California, where it infests at least two species of the native estuary mud shrimp, Upogebia. Intense Orthione infestations are associated with the apparent demise of many local populations of Upogebia pugettensis yet nonindigenous origins of Orthione in North America and thus the ecological significance of its impacts have remained in doubt. Six criteria reveal that Orthione is introduced to North America: its conspecificity with disjunct Asian populations, its earliest (1950s) collections in Asia, its late discovery among symbiotic species associated with Upogebia, its historical absence, and its appearance in North America coincident with extensive new ballast water traffic from Asia. Orthione is the first recognized bopyrid isopod invasion globally. Coexistence of U. pugettensis, which are ecosystem engineers, with its newly acquired parasite cannot be assumed. Orthione threatens eastern Pacific estuary ecosystems where Upogebia were previously abundant.
Thirty species of Bopyridae in 25 genera and six subfamilies are listed for Queensland, of which 13 represent new state records, and eight are new to the Australian fauna. Of these, three new species are described: Scyracepon australiana sp. nov., infesting the crab Australoplax tridentata (A. Milne Edwards); Athelges ankistron sp. nov., infesting the hermit crab Diogenes pallescens Whitelegge; and Diplophryxus negrimaculatus sp. nov. infesting the palaemonid shrimp Phycomenes zostericola Bruce. Five previously described species are new records for Australia: Pagurion tuberculata Shiino, 1933; Pseudione magna Shiino, 1951; Dactylokepon richardsonae Stebbing, 1910; Megacepon choprai George, 1946; Eophrixus kuboi (Shiino, 1939). New Queensland records are: Anuropodione australiensis Bourdon, 1976; Aporobopyrina lamellata Shiino, 1934; Parathelges aniculi (Whitelegge, 1897); Pseudostegias dulcilacuum Markham, 1982; Diplophryxus jordani Richardson, 1904. Eleven species are recorded from Moreton Bay. Parabopyrella barnardi australiensis (Bourdon, 1980) is formally raised to full species status. Parathelges weberi Nierstrasz & Brender a Brandis, 1923, and P. whiteleggei Nierstrasz & Brender a Brandis, 1931, are considered junior synonyms of Parathelges aniculi (Whitelegge, 1897). An earlier record of Pseudostegias setoensis Shiino, 1933, from Queensland is re-identified as P. dulcilacuum Markham, 1982. Seventeen new bopyrid hosts are recorded. All species newly collected in Queensland waters are illustrated, and most are partially or completely described. Synonymies are complete except where otherwise noted, and are presented for all species known to occur in Queensland. q Bopyridae, new species, Queensland, Australia, Moreton Bay, taxonomy, parasitism, Decapoda Nine species of Bopyridae were collected during field work associated with the Thirteenth Inter national Marine Biological Workshop on the Marine Fauna and Flora of Moreton Bay, Queens land, during February 2005. While that material forms the core of this report, the opportunity has been taken to review the bopyrid fauna of Queensland as a whole. Accordingly, other collect ions in the Queensland Museum were examined, and these were supplemented, as necessary, by examination of types and material from other Australian and European museums. In their catalogue of the Isopoda of Australia, Poore et al. (2002) list 31 species of 26 genera in 8 subfamilies of Bopyridae, including 17 species of 12 genera in 5 subfamilies from Queensland. The total for Queensland is here raised to 30 species in 25 genera in 6 sub families, and the Australian total is consequently raised to 39 species. This is the first record from China of the bopyrid isopod genus Asymmetrione, of which the new species Asymmetrione globifera, a parasite of the hermit crab Dardanus hessii (Miers) in Beibu Gulf and South China Sea, is described. The female A. globifera differs from Asymmetrione nossibensis Bourdon in the shape of its barbula and ornamentation of the first oostegite. A tabulation of the occurrence of all currently known species of Asymmetrione is included. New genus Parasymmetrione is described. The type species, Parasymmetrione tuberculineata, sp. nov., a parasite of Clibanarius corallinus (H. Milne-Edwards) Xisha, is similar in appearance to Asymmetrione spp. but differs, in the female, in not having the propodi of its pereopods produced into sockets and having uniramous uropoda; the male of P. tuberculineata sp. nov. differs from species of Asymmetrione in having the dactyli of only its first pair of pereopods markedly longer than those of the following pereopods.
The fauna of parasitic isopods of the family Bopyridae in Singapore is only poorly known, consisting of only seven species in as many genera in five subfamilies. A new small collection adds four species in as many genera, two of them belonging to a subfamily not previously recorded from Singapore. These are: Pleurocrypta macrocephalon Nierstrasz & Brender a Brandis, 1923 (incorporating Pleurocrypta yatsui (Pearse, 1930)) (subfamily Pseudioninae), infesting Petrolisthes lamarckii (Leach); Parabopyrella bonnieri (Nierstrasz & Brender a Brandis, 1923) (subfamily Bopyrinae), infesting Alpheus strenuus Dana; Athelges takanoshimensis Ishii, 1914; and Pseudostegias dulcilacuum Markham, 1982 (both subfamily Athelginae), both of the latter two species infesting Diogenes pallescens Whitelegge. A list of the 11 species now known from Singapore with their host species and citations is presented.
The parasitic isopod genus Gigantione is first recorded from China. Four species are reported infesting xanthid and goneplacid crabs, three are new to science, and one is a new record from China. Gigantione ishigakiensis Shiino, 1941, infesting Liagore rubromaculata (De Haan); G. hainanensis sp. nov., infesting Atergatis floridus (L.) and Atergatis sp., which differs from other recorded species in the shape of its barbula, first oostegite and subrectangular maxilliped; G. rhombos sp. nov., infesting Heteroplax dentata Stimpson, Eucrate alcocki Serene and Eucrate sp., its female distinguished from other species of Gigantione by having a prominent rhombic projection on the barbula; and G. tau sp. nov., infesting Carcinoplax longimanus (De Haan), the female of which differs from other species mainly by its T-shaped pigmentation on the head. Four brachyuran crabs are first reported as hosts of bopyrids. A list of all brachyuran species so far recorded as bopyrid hosts in China is provided.
Aporobopyrus bourdonis, new species, earlier reported from the Pacific coast of Mexico but never described, infests Petrolisthes edwardsii (de Saussure), the same host species as before, in Costa Rica. Aporobopyrus muguensis Shiino, 1964, previously reported several times along the coast of California infesting Pachycheles rudis Stimpson and P. pubescens Holmes, is redescribed on the basis of material from Monterey, California, infesting P. pubescens. Aporobopyrus trilobatus (Nierstrasz and Brender à Brandis, 1925), previously known from the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific coast of Mexico, infests Petrolisthes ortmanni Nobili, a new host record, in Costa Rica. Discomorphus magnifoliatus, new genus, new species, infests Petrolisthes cinctipes (Randall) in central California. Synonymies are given for all species. Included is a summary of all porcellanids known to bear bopyrid parasites in the eastern Pacific.
Entophilus mirabiledictu, new species, is described as a parasite of Callianassa aqabaensis Dworschak, 2003, in shallow water on the Jordanian coast of the Gulf of Aqaba. It is compared with the only species previously known from the genus or subfamily Entophilinae Richardson, 1903, Entophilus onmitectus Richardson, 1903, a parasite of several species of the galatheid anomuran genus Munida in water deeper than 300 m at widespread localities around the world. Information on the prevalence of the parasite and its effects on its hosts is provided.
Progebiophilus euxinicus (Popov, 1927) is recorded from the north end of the Adriatic Sea, a new geographical record. Progebiophilus bruscai Salazar-Vallejo & Leija-Tristdn, 1989, infests Upogebia dawsoni Williams and U. rugosa (Lockington) in the Gulf of California, Mexico, the latter a new host record and from a locality farther north than previously recorded. Progebiophilus upogebiae (Hay, 1917) infests U. affinis (Say) on the east coast of Florida, U.S.A, a new geographical record. Progebiophilus kensleyi infests U. africana (Ortmann) on the southeastern coast of South Africa. Progebiophilus insperatus infests U. paraffinis Williams in S (a) over tildeo Paulo state, Brazil. Names of some hosts of Phyllodurus abdominalis Stimpson, 1857, are corrected, and the total range of the genus Phyllodurus Stimpson is considered.
Two bopyrid genera whose species parasitize only Upogebia spp. are reviewed and revised. Orthione Markham, 1988, heretofore known only from its type-species, O. furcata (Richardson, 1904), is rediagnosed and enlarged. Orthione griffenis, new species, infests Upogebia pugettensis (Dana, 1852) in Oregon, U.S.A. Orthione mesoamericana, new species, infests U. spinigera (Smith, 1871) on the Pacific coasts of Costa Rica and Colombia. The genus Metabopyrus Shiino, 1939, is incorporated into Gyge Cornalia and Panceri, 1861, which is rediagnosed, and a key is given to the four known species. Gyge ovalis (Shiino, 1939), formerly Metabopyrus ovalis Shiino, 1939, is re-described on the basis of new material found infesting U. edulis Ngoc-Ho & Chan, 1992, in Taiwan, a new host and geographical record.
A third species in the bopyrid genus Albunione Markham and Boyko, 1999, is described: Albunione yoda, new species, infesting the sand crab Albunea groeningi Boyko, 2002 (Decapoda: Hippoidea: Albuneidae) on the western coast of Taiwan. Albunione includes all bopyrid species known from hosts in the genus Albunea, it's subfamily, and family. Remarks are made about the morphological characters of the genus and, in light of a reconsideration of its characters, Albunione is transferred from the bopyrid subfamily Ioninae to the subfamily Pseudioninae. An emended diagnosis for the genus is presented. Comments on the phylogenetic relationships and possible coevolution between the parasites and hosts are provided.
