This review aims to explore the relationship between mitochondrial dysfunction and osteosarcoma progression. Osteosarcoma, a highly malignant primary bone tumor, has long been linked to various metabolic alterations, including mitochondrial anomalies. Mitochondria, known for their roles in energy production, reactive oxygen species regulation, and apoptosis, are implicated in cancer pathogenesis. This paper consolidates evidence from multiple studies, highlighting how mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to osteosarcoma development, tumor growth, and metastasis. Findings suggest that abnormal mitochondrial functions—ranging from disrupted energy metabolism to metabolic reprogramming—significantly impact tumor progression. Despite these insights, challenges persist in establishing a direct causal relationship. The review identifies potential therapeutic strategies targeting mitochondrial pathways and emphasizes the need for further studies to clarify mechanisms linking mitochondrial dysfunction and osteosarcoma
College students in Japan are restricted from accessing the campus associated with promoting online classes during the COVID-19 pandemic; it would lead to less physical activity and poor relationships with others. Here, we measured 887 college students’ amounts of physical activity, sitting time, self-reported cognitive and affective empathy, and perceived social support before and after easing campus entrance restrictions. The amounts of total activity, vigorous-intensity, and moderate-intensity activity in college students, both male and female, increased after easing restrictions of accessing the campus compared during restrictions. The amounts of walking activity were unchanged. Self-reported cognitive empathy scores significantly increased in female students after mitigating restrictions, but not in males. Furthermore, the total of physical activity’s change amounts was positively correlated with changes in the scores of affective empathy and perceived family support. In addition, changes in the scores of affective empathy were positively correlated with perceived social help from family, friends, and close people. The current findings imply that increasing physical activity levels after easing restriction of access to the campus would lead to a better quality of life in young adults during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In Bangladesh, the surge of cases due to the emergence of Omicron had initially been a cause of worry for experts. With time, there have been many changes brought to structures in Bangladesh to cope with and work around COVID-19. However, with coronavirus cases rising over and over again, some changes have become permanent. The aim of this paper is to find out what measures have been taken in Bangladesh to keep the cases under control from Omicron and compare it to other South Asian countries.
SARS-CoV-2 Omicron is the next possible version of the COVID-19 virus that will spread globally after the D614G, Beta/Gamma, and Delta waves. Among all the VOCs studied to date, the virus has the highest mutation rate, making it more likely to spread and more resistant to the vaccine's protective effects. To respond effectively, getting people thinking about the issue without going overboard is necessary. The emergence of new COVID-19 variations like Omicron serves as a sobering reminder that this pandemic is far from over. Until the vaccine is widely distributed, people should remain isolated from one another, use protective gear such as masks and wash their hands frequently and ventilate their homes to reduce the spread of the infection. Access to vaccines and other preventative health care is a global need.
Transposons are mobile DNA sequences abundant in eukaryotic genomes. Non-coding small RNAs have various biological functions and affect gene expression at different levels. Transposons are an important source of non-coding small RNAs in many eukaryotic genomes. Some recent studies have found that transposons and their derived non-coding small RNAs participate important roles in gene regulation, but few relevant reviews exist in China. Therefore, this paper reviews the current research achievements on transposons and non-coding small RNAs from two aspects: the relationship between transposons and their derived non-coding small RNAs and their role in the genome and biological evolution.
Background: In a public health crisis, knowledge and understanding of disease transmission modes, fundamental hygiene concepts, and procedures are critical for designing effective control measures. The purpose of this research was to assess the Bangladeshi population's Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) towards COVID-19. Methods: A series of questions about the KAP of the population about COVID-19 were asked in this cross-sectional study, which was conducted among the general population of Bangladesh over the age of 15, and participants' demographic characteristics and source of information about COVID-19 were recorded and analyzed. Results: Despite the fact that the majority of respondents (more than 60%) had a positive attitude about COVID-19, 70% of those questioned in Bangladesh had insufficient understanding and preventative actions. This latter discovery is promising and suggests a potential therapeutic strategy. Male and less educated respondents reported inadequate COVID-19 preventive methods, as well as a lack of understanding about signs and symptoms and transmission. The findings revealed a substantial link between knowledge, attitude, and practice among women of a certain gender, age, and education level. Male gender, non-healthcare-related jobs, single status, and a lesser degree of schooling were all substantially correlated with poorer knowledge scores, according to multiple linear regression analysis. Conclusion: The present study revealed a high attitude among the study population towards COVID-19 but a poor response on knowledge and preventive practices, which can be enhanced by awareness campaigns and proper planning.
Aim: Tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes mellitus continue to be significant public health problems. Diabetes screening of tuberculosis patients will provide early case diagnosis, improved diabetes control, and improved tuberculosis treatment result. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the prevalence and risk factors for diabetes in tuberculosis patients, as well as their influence on the treatment result of tuberculosis. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Bangladesh's randomly chosen peripheral health institutions. All TB patients above the age of 18 years were checked for diabetes. Age, gender, family history, smoking, and BMI were all considered as risk factors. Results: Out of 165 participants, diabetes was shown to be prevalent in 35% of TB patients. Diabetes was related to advanced age and type of tuberculosis; its origin (pulmonary or extra pulmonary) and socioeconomic level were found to be significant. Conclusion: Diabetes is a common comorbidity among tuberculosis patients. Over the age of 50 years, the risk of this twin morbidity increases significantly. Screening tuberculosis patients for fasting blood sugar values will aid in the early diagnosis of diabetes and will lead to a better prognosis.
Empathy is one of the essential functions of mammals for maintaining relationships with others. Physical activity contributes to enhancing empathic attitude and behavior; however, it is remained to cover the effective intensity of exercise on mammal empathy. Here, we tested the effects of light-intensity exercise, which has beneficial effects on expressing neurotrophic factors in the brain, on empathic behavior. Eight-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were subjected to forced wheel running at light-intensity (7.0 m/min, 30 min/day, 5 days/week) for 4 weeks. Then, all mice were subjected to helping behavior to evaluate their empathic behavior. The insular cortex was collected for analyzing the expressions of mRNA and miRNA. Four weeks of light-intensity exercise enhanced helping behavior. Exercised mice exhibited higher Bdnf gene expressions in the insular cortex than sedentary mice. In addition, there was a significant positive correlation between mRNA levels of Fndc5 and Bdnf in the insular cortex. Based on miRNA sequencing, 26 out of 51 miRNAs were significantly upregulated, and 25 out of 51 miRNAs were significantly downregulated in the insular cortex of mice with exercise. There were significant correlations between 11 out of 51 miRNAs and helping behavior; miR-486a-3p, which relates to FNDC5 expression, was contained. These results imply that miR-486a-3p/Fndc5/Bdnf pathway in the insular cortex would be a possible target for treating empathy.
Background: The prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has important health complications for both mother and child and is increasing all over the world. Although prevalence estimates for GDM are not new in developed and many developing countries, data are lacking for many low-income countries like Bangladesh.Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of GDM in Bangladesh.Research design and methods: This cross-sectional study included 3447 women who consecutively visited the antenatal clinics with an average gestation age of 26 weeks. GDM was defined according to WHO criteria (fasting plasma glucose [FPG] >= 7.0 mmol/L or 2-h >= 7.8 mmol/L) and the new ADA criteria (FPG >= 5.3 mmol/L or 2-h >= 8.6 mmol/L OGTT). We also calculated overt diabetes as FPG >= 7.0 mmol/L.Results: Prevalence of GDM was 9.7% according to the WHO criteria and 12.9% according to the ADA criteria in this study population. Prevalence of overt diabetes was 1.8%. Women with GDM were older, higher educated, had higher household income, higher parity, parental history of diabetes, and more hypertensive, compared with non-GDM women.Conclusion: This study demonstrates a high prevalence of GDM in Bangladesh. These estimates for GDM may help to formulate new policies to prevent and manage diabetes. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.
A prediabetic population has an increased risk of cognitive decline and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study investigated whether the progression of memory dysfunction and dysregulated brain glycogen metabolism is prevented with 4 mo of exercise intervention from the presymptomatic stage in a T2DM rat model. Memory function and biochemical and molecular profiles were assessed in the presymptomatic stage of Otsuka-Long-Evans-Tokushima fatty (OLETF) rats, a T2DM model, with Long-Evans Tokushima (LETO) rats as genetic control. These rats were subjected to light-or moderate-intensity treadmill running for 4 mo with repetition of the same experiments. Significant hippocampal-dependent memory dysfunction was observed in the pre-symptomatic stage of OLETF rats, accompanied by downregulated levels of hippocampal monocarboxylate transporter 2 (MCT2), a neuronal lactate-transporter, without alteration in hippocampal glycogen levels. Four months of light or moderate exercise from the presymptomatic stage of T2DM normalized glycemic parameters and hippocampal molecular normalization through MCT2, glycogen, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels with the improvement of memory dysfunction in OLETF rats. A 4-mo exercise regimen from the presymptomatic stage of T2DM at a light and moderate intensities contributed to the prevention of the development of T2DM and the progression of cognitive decline with hippocampal lactate-transport and BDNF improvement. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Type 2 diabetes mellitus is an independent risk factor for hippocampal memory dysfunction, which would progress since the prediabetic stage. We found that 4 mo of exercise both at the light and moderate intensity prevented the progression of memory dysfunction with an improvement of hippocampal MCT2 expression in presymptomatic diabetes, implying that light intensity exercise could be a therapeutic approach, and the alteration of hippocampal MCT2 would be a thera-peutic target of memory dysfunction from presymptomatic diabetes.
In December 2019, a new human coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), was discovered in Wuhan, China. Since then, the virus has spread over the world, affecting over 180 nations. SARS-CoV-2 has infected people of all ages, races, and genders, infecting both men and women and spreading at an alarming pace across communities. Given the virus's origin, much remains unknown; however, we do know that clinical presentations vary from a typical cold to more serious infections, including pneumonia, bronchitis, severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), multi-organ failure, and even death. COVID-19 is thought to have a more fast and severe progression in people with underlying health issues or co-morbidities, frequently resulting in death. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at Bangladesh's Tertiary care hospital. 534 patients were selected for this study. Medical history, age, gender, and co-morbidities (including Hypertension, Diabetes, and CKD, etc.) were recorded at the time of diagnosis, biochemical parameters such as CRP, ESR, creatinine, FBS, Hb, and LDH were also recorded. SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected using a real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) at diagnosis and throughout the follow-up of these patients. Results: The comorbid conditions, illness progression, and death rates in patients from a Bangladeshi tertiary care hospital were investigated in this study. COVID-19 patients with co-morbidities, such as hypertension or diabetes, are more likely to have a more severe course and development of the disease. Furthermore, individuals over the age of 60 who have co-morbidities and are infected have a higher incidence of admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) and death from the COVID-19. Conclusion: Where Vaccination, Early diagnosis, and Management lead to a better prognosis, patients with co-morbidities should take all steps to prevent contracting SARS CoV-2 since their prognosis is generally the poorest.
Background: Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) vaccines have been licensed for usage and have been delivered over the globe in various regions. There is a lack of public awareness and understanding of COVID-19 vaccinations, however. As a result, researchers conducted a survey to see what Bangladeshis had to say about COVID-19 vaccinations. Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted among the general population of Bangladesh, asked a series of questions about the KAP of the population with regard to COVID-19 vaccination, and the demographic characteristics of participants and the source of information with regard to the COVID-19 vaccine were recorded and analyzed. Results: A total of 386 complete surveys were included in the final analysis. 35.2% of people, who took part in it, said that everyone in Bangladesh should get the COVID-19 vaccine, while 64.8% said no to this idea. As a result of our survey, 73.6% of respondents believed that the new COVID-19 vaccination, which is now used in Bangladesh, may cause negative effects. Although a large number of the population was illiterate (44.6%), our study indicated that those with higher levels of education had a better understanding of the COVID-19 vaccination. This research indicated that those who had previously received a vaccination had a better understanding of the COVID-19 vaccine. For this to be successful, people must have had positive vaccination experiences in the past. There is a far greater awareness about COVID-19 vaccinations in urban areas compared to rural places. However, when multiple regressions were used, this association did not hold up. Conclusion: In Bangladesh, many are unfamiliar with the COVID-19 vaccination, but they have a positive attitude toward it. Before mass vaccines are planned in the near future, health education campaigns must begin immediately to assist people in better understanding their health.
Cognitive decline associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a risk factor to impair human health. Although light-intensity exercise prevents hippocampal memory dysfunction in pre-symptomatic T2DM animals by altering hippocampal lactate transport and neurotrophic factors, the effects of light-intensity exercise in an advanced stage of T2DM animals remain unclear. Here, ob/ob mice, an animal model of T2DM, were subjected to light-intensity exercise (5.0 m/min) for 30 min/day, five days/week for four weeks. The effects of light-intensity exercise on hippocampal complications, mRNA expressions of monocarboxylate transporter (MCT), and miRNA levels were assessed. The light-intensity exercise improved hippocampal memory retention in ob/ob mice. Downregulated hippocampal Mct2 mRNA levels in T2DM were improved with light-intensity exercise. Hippocampal mRNA levels of Mct1 and Mct4 were unchanged within groups. Based on miRNA sequencing, sedentary ob/ob mice exhibited that 71 miRNAs were upregulated, and 77 miRNAs were downregulated in the hippocampus. In addition, the exercise significantly increased 24 miRNAs and decreased 4 miRNAs in the T2DM hippocampus. The exercise reversed T2DM-induced alterations of hippocampal 9 miRNAs, including miR-200a-3p. Our findings imply that miR-200a-3p/Mct2 in the hippocampus would be a possible clinical target for treating T2DM-induced memory dysfunction.
Background: Several SARS-CoV-2 variants have been discovered in different parts of the world since the COVID-19 epidemic began. The most recent COVID-19 variant to be discovered is the Omicron strain. When we have a thorough understanding of the epidemic, we will be able to respond appropriately. The primary purpose of this research is to assess the level of Omicron variant awareness and understanding among the Bangladeshi people. Methods: In the midst of the appearance of the Omicron variation, a cross-sectional analysis was performed. The survey was conducted from January 3, 2021, to February 5, 2022. Statistical data from the descriptive analysis were displayed as numbers (N), percentages (%), and averages and variances (Mean, Standard Deviation) (m SD). To examine the correlation between the dependent and independent categories, we utilized the Chi-square test (x2 ) in SPSS. Results: On average, the 200 respondents were 33.8 ± 12.1 years old. In a survey, more than 55 percent of respondents had a favorable impression of the new COVID-19 variation. However, males and those with lower levels of education felt there were not any measures in place to halt the spread of Omicron, and they lacked information about the disease's symptoms and transmission. The results of our survey indicate that individuals have some knowledge about the new Omicron strain (B.1.1.529). Conclusion: Awareness campaigns and strategic preparation can help improve the dismal response on knowledge and preventative actions shown in the current study. While much progress has been made in our understanding of this virus, there is still a significant knowledge gap (B.1.1.529).
Background: Empathy, consisting of cognitive empathy and affective empathy, is essential for creating re-lationships with others. Since the genetic polymorphism of oxytocin receptor (OXTR) and arginine-vasopressin V1B receptor (AVPR1B) relate to prosocial behavior and empathy, it would need to innovate strategies for treating human empathy by considering individual genetic variations. Physical activity is expected as a possible strategy; here, we investigated the influences of genetic polymorphisms in OXTR SNP rs53576 and AVPR1B SNP rs28373064, on the relationships of self-reported empathy with physical activity.Methods: The saliva is collected from a hundred Japanese college students for determining the individual polymorphism of OXTR SNP rs53576 (AA, AG, or GG genotype) and AVPR1B SNP rs28373064 (TT, TC, or CC genotype). In addition, the participants' self-reported cognitive and affective empathy, amounts of physical activity, and sitting time were evaluated with questionaries.Results: The participants with OXTR SNP rs53576 GG genotype showed a significant negative correlation be-tween sitting time and cognitive empathy adjusted by age, gender, and sports experience. Further, there was a trend to correlate between physical activity amounts and cognitive empathy in the participants carrying the G variant in OXTR SNP rs53576 (AG or GG). As for AVPR1B SNP rs28373064, the persons with TT genotype exhibited a negative correlation trend between sitting time and cognitive empathy. Conclusions: There are possible correlations between the self-reported cognitive empathy and physical activity amounts in the persons carrying the G variant of OXTR rs53576 or with the TT genotype for AVPR1B SNP rs28373064.
For decades, monkeypox virus was only a disease that infected animals but, in the 1990’s it found a new target in humans. This paper dives into the history of human monkeypox and the root of the cause right from the start. The aim here is to understand the underlying cause for the sudden rise in monkeypox cases in regions that are not conducive to the disease. Throughout the paper, there will also be a list of activities mentioned that people ought to avoid when a known person is infected. Overall, by the end of the paper there will be a clear idea of do’s and don’ts regarding monkeypox virus.
Empathy, which consists of cognitive and affective empathy, is one of the vital skills in humans for creating and maintaining relationships with others, now, there are many empathy-deficient people, possibly deriving from an increase in harassment-related issues. Although there is a possibility that physical activity improves empathy, the association of physical activity with cognitive and affective empathy in healthy humans remains unclear. Thus, the present study aims to clarify the relationship between levels of physical activity and self-reported empathy. Eight hundred and ninety-three responses for two questionnaires, the short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (SV-IPAQ) and Questionnaire of Cognitive and Affective Empathy (QCAE), were analyzed. Levels of physical activity in a usual week were measured based on the SV-IPAQ, and participants were divided into three groups: low, moderate and high physical activity. The scores for cognitive and affective empathy were measured based on QCAE. We found that people with a moderate or high physical activity level show significantly higher self-reported cognitive empathy compared to people with a low physical activity level. The score for self-reported affective empathy wasn’t affected by physical activity level. Physical activity level in a usual week showed a significant positive correlation with self-reported cognitive empathy scores, but not with self-reported affective empathy scores. Our findings imply that an increase in physical activity contributes to better cognitive empathy in healthy young adults.
Objective and method: To examine the effect of altitude swimming training on BNP (Brain natriuretic peptide) and ANP (Atrial Natriuretic Peptide) levels, and evaluate if BNP and ANP can be hemodynamic markers of hypoxia- and traininginduced stress, Ten collegiate swimmers (Tr) who participated in the altitude training camp at 1900m and 5 healthy subjects (Con) were participated in this study. Blood samples were obtained before the training (day0: Pre), during the training (day5: T1, 10: T2, 16: T3), and after the training (5th after descent: Post). Results: Chronologically, BNP of Tr decreased immediately after ascent and increased thereafter, however the changes were not significant. ANP levels were almost unchanged in Tr, whereas there was an increase at T1 in Con compared with Tr (P<0.05). BNP/ANP ratio was significantly higher in Tr (P<0.05) than Con at T3. The results of our study indicate that swimming training at an altitude of 1900m may influence ANP and BNP in the different way, and the stimuli of training is dominant to the hypoxic stress. Conclusion: Our results suggest that we can evaluate the training and hypoxic stress based on natriuretic peptide levels, and predict the hemodynamics or dehydration state by monitoring the natriuretic peptide levels during altitude training
Introduction: Exercise becomes a stress when performed at an intensity above the lactate threshold (LT) because at that point the plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), a marker of stress response, increases. It is possible that the exercise-induced ACTH response is regulated at least by arginine vasopressin (AVP) and possibly by corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), but this remains unclear. To clarify the involvement of these factors, it is useful to intervene pharmacologically in the regulatory mechanisms, with a physiologically acceptable exercise model. Methods: We used a special stress model of treadmill running (aerobic exercise) for male Wistar rats, which mimic the human physiological response, where plasma ACTH levels increase at just above the LT for 30 min. Animals were administered the AVP V1b receptor antagonist SSR149415 (SSR) and/or the CRH type 1 receptor antagonist CP154526 (CP) intraperitoneally before the exercise, which allowed the monitoring of exercise-induced ACTH response. Immunohistochemical evaluation of activated AVP and CRH neurons with exercise was performed for the animals’ hypothalami. Results: A single injection of either antagonist, SSR or CP, resulted in inhibited ACTH levels after exercise stress. Moreover, the combined injection of SSR and CP strongly suppressed ACTH secretion during treadmill running to a greater extent than each alone. The running-exercise-induced activation of both AVP and CRH neurons in the hypothalamus was also confirmed. Conclusion: These results lead us to hypothesize that AVP and CRH are cooperatively involved in exercise-induced ACTH response just above the LT. This may also reflect the stress response with moderate-intensity exercise in humans.
Since December 2019, the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic has transfixed the medical world. COVID-19 symptoms vary from mild to severe and underlying chronic conditions such as pulmonary/cardiovascular disease and diabetes induce excessive inflammatory responses to COVID-19 and these underlying chronic diseases are mediated by endothelial dysfunction. Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is the most common cause of death in COVID-19 patients, but coagulation induced by excessive inflammation, thrombosis, and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) also induce death by multiple-organ dysfunction syndrome. These associations imply that maintaining endothelial integrity is crucial for favorable prognoses with COVID-19 and therapeutic intervention to support this may be beneficial. Here, we summarize the extent of heart injuries, ischemic stroke and hemorrhage, acute kidney injury, and liver injury caused by immune-mediated endothelial dysfunction that result in the phenomenon of multi-organ dysfunction seen in COVID-19 patients. Moreover, the potential therapeutic effect of angiotensin receptor blockers and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors that improve endothelial dysfunction as well as the bradykinin storm are discussed.
