We study the coupled effects of ion beam chemistry and morphology on the assembly of templated epitaxial nanostructures. Using a focused ion beam (FIB) system equipped with a mass-selecting filter, we pattern Si substrates with local ion doses of Si, Ge and Ga to control subsequent GexSi1-x epitaxial nanostructure assembly. This capability to employ different templating species allows us to study how different incorporated ion species in the near surface region affect the ability to localize nucleation during subsequent epitaxial growth. Our results indicate that FIB-directed self-assembly is a complex process, dependent on dose-induced morphology in addition to ion-specific chemical effects.
We employ focused ion beam patterning of single crystal Si(100) surfaces to template the assembly of Ge(Si) nanostructure arrays. The evolution and final structures of the templated arrays are determined by combinations of transmission electron, low energy electron microscope, focused ion beam and scanning probe microscopies. It is shown how the positions of individual nanostructures may be controlled to the order of 10 nm. However, to achieve controlled spacings between elements that are in the 10 nm range requires careful matching of the characteristic lengths scales of self assembly mechanisms to the length scales of the external lithographic "forcing functions".
Cattle grow and shed fibre which assists them adapt to seasonal changes in the environment. In the absence of cattle fibre production data for southern Australia, Angus, Hereford, Simmental and Limousin cows and crosses between these breeds grazing perennial pastures at Hamilton, Victoria were sampled in late winter. The fibre-growing area on the sides of cattle was measured, fibre sampled at the mid-side site and the sampling area determined. Fibre was tested for fibre diameter distribution, clean washing yield and fibre length measured. Cows were 3–7 years of age, liveweights were 412–712 kg and the mean fibre-growing area was 2.2 m2. This produced an average 682 g of total fibre (range 346–1175 g). The mean fibre diameter of all fibres was 51.7 µm (range 43–62 µm) and 18% of fibres were <36 µm (range 6–39%). The clean washing yield was 92.4% (range 87.4–95.8%). Fibre length averaged 21 mm. Increasing the age, liveweight and condition score of cows and increasing weight of clean fibre were associated with significant increases in mean fibre diameter. Breed of cattle did not affect fibre production (P > 0.1) but did affect mean fibre diameter (P < 0.05). The quantity of fibre production indicates potential for low value textile production. The high level of total fibre production, twice that of an earlier report, and fibre shedding from cattle suggests that white fibre-producing animals such as Merino sheep, Angora and cashmere goats and alpaca should avoid using cattle-handling facilities, particularly in the month before shearing.
The present study is a component of a multi-site experiment, using Bos taurus cattle generated at four locations across southern Australia, designed to examine postweaning growth pathways for progeny whose sires were extreme in retail beef yield and intramuscular fat. Treatment and interaction effects on beef production and meat quality were examined within and across sites. The present paper describes the effect of postweaning growth and sire carcass type on liveweight and carcass traits at the Hamilton site. Angus sires selected on estimated breeding values for extremes in retail beef yield (RBY%), intramuscular fat (IMF%) (estimated breeding values for IMF% are derived by using live-animal ultrasound scanning) or both and sire breed types considered to be more extreme in those traits (Limousin, and Belgian Blue for yield, and Wagyu for intramuscular fat) were joined to crossbred and straight-bred cows. After weaning, the resultant 645 steer and heifer progeny were grown on a fast and slow growth path to ~550 kg and slaughtered, averaging 0.68 kg/day and 22.2 months, and 0.49 kg/day and 27.8 months for growth rate and age at slaughter, respectively. Growth path, sire carcass type and sex affected carcass traits; however, there were no sire carcass type by growth treatment interactions. The fast growth-path cattle were fatter, had more intramuscular fat (measured chemically), a higher Meat Standards of Australia (MSA) USA and AUS marble score, and a higher predicted MSA eating-quality score. Progeny of Wagyu sires were lighter at weaning and slaughter and had a lower hot standard carcass weight than the other sire carcass types. The Belgian Blue and Limousin progeny had a higher dressing percentage, a higher RBY% and a lower P8 and rib-fat depth and lower IMF% than the other sire breed types. Progeny of the high RBY% Angus had a lower rib-fat depth, a lower IMF% and higher RBY% than those selected for high IMF%. There was no difference in IMF% between the Wagyu or the high IMF% Angus. Progeny from the Belgian Blue, Limousin and Wagyu had a larger eye muscle area than the other sire breeds. The results indicate that simultaneous selection for supposedly antagonistic traits of IMF% and RBY% would result in carcass having high values of both measurements. Females were lighter than steers at slaughter, had a lower hot standard carcass weight, were fatter at the P8 and rib, and had a higher marble score and IMF%, a lower yield and a lower MSA-predicted eating-quality score than did steers. There was no interaction between postweaning growth and sire carcass type. These results indicate that with the use of appropriate sire carcass types and BREEDPLAN, and post-weaning nutrition, beef producers can confidently change carcass parameters to suit market specifications.

Purpose – To research the gender literature in order to determine whether it is advisable for a financial advisor to adjust their planning and advising processes based on the gender of their client. Design/methodology/approach – To correlate the gender literature with the personal financial planning process in order to determine whether advisors should adjust their approach based on the gender of their client. Findings – The gender literature reveals significant differences concerning how men and women invest; consequently, it is felt that it is advisable for financial advisors to tailor their approach based on the gender of their client. Research limitations/implications – The financial planning process should be modified to incorporate the gender of the client. Practical implications – Financial advisors should tailor their approach to the gender of their clients in order to ideal with them more effectively. Originality/value – As female investors grow in importance, processes should be modified or adjusted in order to accommodated their preferences.
Measuring differences in the efficiency of converting feed to liveweight gains of beef cattle depends on assessments of feed intake and animal growth over a specified period. Previous studies have shown that feed intake can be measured with sufficient precision after 35 days, however, to assess growth rate with acceptable precision, a feeding period of 70 days is required when the cattle are weighed fortnightly. In order to test if more frequent weighing could improve the precision of estimates of liveweight, or reduce the duration of tests, animals were tested in units where an automatic weighing system recorded the liveweight of an animal every time it entered a feeder. Eight groups of beef bulls (171 animals in total) were tested. A random coefficient regression model including a cubic spline for time was used to estimate average daily gain. Evaluation of the residual variance, slope (average daily gain), and its standard error from the models showed that through the use of automated liveweight measurement, the duration of tests could be decreased to 56 days without reducing the precision of estimates of liveweight change. Depending on the precision required, further decreases in testing time could be accommodated.
The effects of combinations of different fertiliser rates and grazing methods applied to phalaris-based pastures on an acid, saline, yellow sodosol on the Dundas Tablelands of western Victoria (mean annual rainfall 623 mm) were measured from 1997 to 2000. The objective was to help identify management systems that improve phalaris growth and persistence, water use, and animal production, and thereby the productivity and sustainability of grazing systems. Pastures were either set stocked with low [mean 6.4 kg phosphorus (P)/ha. year] or high (mean 25 kg P/ha. year) fertiliser rates, or rotationally grazed with high fertiliser (mean 25 kg P/ha. year). Rotational grazing was implemented as either a simple '4-paddock' system (fixed rotation length), or a more intensive system where rotation length varied with pasture growth rate. Unreplicated paddocks of volunteer pasture (dominated by onion grass and annual grass weeds) receiving an average of 8 kg P/ha. year were also monitored. All treatments were stocked with spring-lambing Merino ewes. Stocking rate was an emergent property of each treatment, and was driven by pasture quality and availability.Total pasture herbage accumulation ranged from 7150 to 9750 kg DM/ha. year and was significantly lower on the set-stocked, low-fertility treatment than on all other treatments. A significant treatment day effect in the spline analysis of herbage mass was explained by a trend toward higher pasture mass in the rotationally grazed treatments than set-stocked treatments from the break of season until mid-spring. Rotational grazing led to significantly higher phalaris herbage accumulation than set stocking (mean 3680 v. 2120 kg DM/ha. year), but significantly lower subterranean clover herbage accumulation (1440 v. 2490 kg DM/ha. year). Despite the stronger growth of deep-rooted phalaris in the rotationally grazed treatments, maximum soil water deficits at the end of summer differed only slightly between treatments, with the difference between driest and wettest treatments amounting to only 14 mm. Summer growth of phalaris was apparently insufficient to generate significant differences in soil water extraction at depth, even when phalaris content was increased by rotational grazing, and re-wetting of the soil profile occurred at a similar rate for all treatments. Rotationally grazed treatments supported higher stocking rates than set-stocked treatments at high fertiliser rates (mean 14.9 v. 13.7 ewes/ha), but apparent losses in pasture feeding value due to lower legume content under rotational grazing meant that there were few significant differences between treatments in lamb production per hectare.The experiment showed that grazing method can have a substantial and rapid effect on pasture botanical composition. There are clear opportunities for producers to use temporal and spatial combinations of set stocking and rotational grazing to manipulate herbage mass and pasture composition within broad target ranges for achieving both animal production (e.g. high per-head animal performance) and sustainability (e.g. persistence of perennial grasses) objectives. Rigid application of either set stocking or rotational grazing imposes limitations on both pasture and animal production, and neither grazing method will optimise system performance under all conditions. The experiment also demonstrated that management and land-use changes that have much greater potential to increase water use than those examined here will be needed to ensure the sustainability of pasture systems in the high rainfall zone of western Victoria.
Refers to past research regarding gender differences in investment strategies which has pointed to two important differences: female investors appear both to be more risk averse and to have less confidence in their investment decisions than male investors in equivalent circumstances. Given the relative consistency of these findings, as well as the potential long‐term financial implications of these differing investment strategies, surprisingly little research has focused on the underlying reasons for these gender differences. Proposes that gender differences in information processing styles may account for the lower risk‐taking tendencies among female investors as well as the tendency toward lower confidence levels. Implications regarding marketing strategies for the financial services sector are discussed.
Wool and lamb production from different grazing systems was compared in a Mediterranean environment near Hamilton in southeastern Australia. The grazing systems were based on combinations of fertiliser inputs and grazing methods that could promote the growth and persistence of phalaris (Phalaris aquatica) and increase animal production compared to 'typical' unimproved pastures. In the first 2 years of this experiment, the most productive systems more than doubled ewe stocking rate and wool production, and more than trebled lamb production per hectare, compared to 'typical' unimproved pasture, low fertility, set-stocked systems. The change to a well fertilised phalaris/subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) pasture system accounted for 50-80% of these gains in productivity per hectare, with additional benefits from applying extra phosphorus (P) fertiliser and rotational grazing. These results show the potential for producers to adopt simple changes in management practices that can significantly increase wool and lamb production in southeastern Australia.
Multi-breed estimated breeding values (EBVs) are being developed in the temperate environment of Southern Australia. Spring and autumn calving Angus and Hereford cows were inseminated with semen from a total of 88 Angus. Hereford, Limousin and Simmental sires in 1997 and 1998. Hereford, Limousin and Simmental sited calves from Angus dams (288, 291 and 300 kg) were significantly heavier (P<0.05) at weaning than those from Hereford darns (258, 272, and 282 kg respectively). There was no significant difference between the Angus sired calves from Angus (276 kg) or Hereford (272 kg) dams. Progeny from Hereford cows had more P8 fat at weaning than those from Angus cows (p<0.01) (4.0 and 3.6 mm, respectively), and sire breed also significantly affected (p<0.01) P8 fat at weaning with 4.3, 4.7, 3.4, and 3.0mm for the Angus, Hereford, Limousin and Simmental sired weaners respectively. Eye-muscle area (EMA) of 549 autumn-born weaners was measured at 455 days using ultrasound. EMA was significantly affected (P<0.05) by dam breed (Angus 50.9, Hereford 49.2 cm(2)), sire breed (Angus 48.6, Hereford 48.0, Limousin 54.7 and Simmental 48.8 cm(2)) and sex (heifers 50.8 and steers 49.3 cm(2)).
The effect of various grazing management treatments on newly sown and degraded perennial ryegrass pastures was studied at 6 different locations in the temperate high rainfall zone of southern Australia, as part of the Temperate Pasture Sustainability Key Program. The sites were located at Hamilton (2 sites, 1 grazed by cattle, 1 grazed by sheep) and Cavendish, western Victoria, Victor Harbor (Delamere), South Australia, and Ross and Parattah in Tasmania. Grazing management treatments significantly influenced the ryegrass mass and persistence of the pasture, but effects were not always consistent across sites. Autumn closure increased the perennial ryegrass content at Cavendish and Ross, as did the winter and summer closures at Ross. Spring closure increased the perennial ryegrass content at Hamilton, Cavendish and Ross, but decreased it at Parattah, as did the summer closures at Parattah and Delamere. Fodder conservation decreased the ryegrass only at Parattah. At the Hamilton sheep site, and at Ross, mob stocking increased the ryegrass content, as did increased superphosphate treatments at Hamilton. Rotational grazing at Cavendish and Delamere increased the ryegrass content, as did the late spring or a late summer closure with a short autumn deferment at Cavendish and Ross, but both these treatments decreased ryegrass at Parattah. The treatments that had a negative effect at Parattah may have had a positive effect on cocksfoot at that site, creating competition for, and decreasing the ryegrass content. At most sites, treatments that included some spelling during spring to foster seed shedding, and spelling again in the following autumn to encourage germination seem to have been of benefit to the perennial ryegrass.
