With the transformation of the rural economy and the increasing national emphasis on forest resources, forestry management plays an increasingly important role in promoting household income growth and sustainable rural development. This study, based on a field survey of 1043 micro-level household data collected in Guizhou Province, China, empirically analyzes the impact of participation in forestry management on household income, income structure, and income inequality, as well as its underlying mechanisms. Using endogenous switching models, quantile regression models, and mediation effect models, the study reveals the following findings: First, participation in forestry management significantly enhances household income. Second, the impact of participation in forestry management on income structure varies, significantly increasing both forestry and non-forestry income, with the effect on forestry income being particularly pronounced. Third, participation in forestry management significantly alleviates income inequality, especially for low-income households. Fourth, forestry management indirectly increases household income and non-forestry income by promoting forest-based employment. Forest-based employment acts as a partial mediator in the effect of forestry management on household income and a full mediator in the increase in non-forestry income. The contribution of this study lies in its multidimensional approach to revealing the comprehensive impact of participation in forestry management on rural household income, providing important policy insights for increasing household income and achieving sustainable rural development.
The COVID-19 pandemic has served as a stark reminder to humanity of the urgent need to address environmental concerns. Given the intricate links between tourism and ecological issues, whether perceived risks during the pandemic can foster pro-environmental behaviour through increased concern and reflection about environmental challenges. Drawing on social cognitive theory, this study delves into the mechanisms that shape how visitors' risk perceptions influence their pro-environmental actions in the context of the pandemic. From an online survey, 731 valid responses were accrued. The findings reveal that tourists' risk perceptions have a significant positive influence on environmental concern and pro-environmental behaviour, environmental concern plays a partially mediating role in the relationship between tourists' risk perceptions and pro-environmental behaviour. And environmental ethics reflection plays a positive moderating role in that mediated relationship. Based on these findings, management implications are proposed to promote pro-environmental behaviour among tourists, and the limitations of this study and future research directions are highlighted.
Bamboo is an important agroforestry and forest plant managed and utilized by rural communities in some countries in the Asia Pacific region, which can generate various benefits to meet social and environmental needs. In rural areas of China, as a large number of forest land management rights have been allocated to small-scale farmers, the willingness of small-scale farmers to reinvest in bamboo forest management has become a key factor for bamboo forest ecosystems to be able to sustainably supply quality ecosystem services. Therefore, it is necessary to answer the question of how to enhance small-scale farmers’ willingness to reinvest in bamboo forest management in the current policy and market context. Combining the prospect theory, the mindsponge theory, the theory of planned behavior (TPB), and the technology acceptance model (TAM), this study constructs theoretical models of perceived property rights security, perceived bamboo forest certification, government support, group decision making, risk perception, perceived value, geographic conditions, and resource endowment affecting willingness to reinvest in bamboo forest management. Based on 1090 questionnaires from a field study in Fujian, China, in 2021, structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the theoretical model. The results show that, under the current policy and market environment, government support is the key to enhance small-scale farmers’ willingness to reinvest in bamboo forest management, and their perception of ecological certification also has a facilitating effect on small-scale farmers’ willingness to reinvest in bamboo forest management, in which risk perception plays a significant mediating role. The government can enhance small-scale farmers’ willingness to reinvest in bamboo forest management by maintaining stable land property rights policies, increasing the publicity and promotion of bamboo forest certification, and enhancing information exchange among farmers.
Urban Green Spaces (UGS) have a huge contribution to the health of urban ecosystems. However, they are threatened by numerous factors such as rapid urbanization, resource depletion, and climate change. These factors are inextricably linked to human behaviors, guided by the values and beliefs of people. According to value-belief-norm theory and norm activation model, personal norms are defined as self-expectations of pro-environmental behavior influenced by the ascription of responsibility and awareness of consequences in values and beliefs. When the conditions of responsibility and consequence awareness are met, individuals are more likely to experience a sense of moral obligation to exhibit environmentally responsible behavior. To address conservation and better enable UGS to have a positive function, we must explore how to promote the development of personal norms that are beneficial to UGS conservation. This study explored the influence that UGS values and beliefs have on personal norms. A questionnaire was administered to 1641 urban residents in Beijing, China, and Partial Least Square Structural Modeling was used to assess the causal relationship in the formation of personal norms on UGS conservation. The results showed that intrinsic, instrumental, and relational UGS value orientations contribute directly or indirectly to the formation of personal norms for the conservation of UGS through environmental beliefs as mediators, with the most significant effect being the relational value orientations. The results of the study can provide scientific guidance for future public participation in UGS conservation.
Birdwatching tourism is a model of ecotourism that is beneficial to the sustainable development of developing regions and is growing rapidly in China. In order to explore the development path of birdwatching tourism, this study constructs and tests a model of revisit intention from the birdwatching tourists’ perspective and aims to understand the factors influencing tourists’ revisit intention for birdwatching destinations. The researchers collected 328 valid questionnaires from birdwatching tourists in Mingxi County, Fujian Province, China, and used structural equation modelling to validate the relationships among the study constructs. Cognitive image had the largest influence on revisit intent (0.219), followed by tourist satisfaction (0.172), and perceived image (0.155). Tourist motivation indirectly affects revisit intention through the full mediating effect of the cognitive image. This study provides some insights and references for policymakers and tourism project managers to design or adjust the construction plan of birdwatching-tourism sites.
Tourism has been perceived as an environmentally friendly industry for a long term, but the negative impact of tourist irresponsible behavior on the environment cannot be ignored. Tourists' pro-environmental behavior is crucial to the destination's sustainable development. Taking stimulus-organism-response theory as a framework, this study explores the factors and mechanisms influencing tourists' pro-environmental behaviors by integrating cognitive-affective-conative (CAC) theory and motivation-opportunity-ability (MOA) theory. Through the PLS-SEM analysis with 548 questionnaires, the driving mechanism of tourists' pro-environmental behavior was deeply explored. The results indicate that tourists' environmental knowledge, participation motivation, and opportunity have significant positive effects on pro-environmental behavior, but the role of participation ability on tourists' pro-environmental behavior is not confirmed. Tourists have significant environmental self-identity and environmental commitment, and these affections actively promote tourists' pro-environmental behavior. Except for the participation ability, the other three factors, respectively, influence tourists' environmental behavior through the mediating effects of environmental self-identity and environmental commitment. Given the limited literature integrating CAC and MOA theories within research on tourists' pro-environmental behavior, these findings provide new perspectives for future research. This research enriches the literature on the factors influencing tourist pro-environmental behavior and also provides practical guidance for promoting tourists' pro-environmental behavior.
The rapid development of ecotourism provides a win–win path for ecological and environmental protection and sustainable economic development. However, environmental problems are increasingly prominent in ecotourism destinations, which seriously hinders their sustainable development. This study explored how environmental knowledge, environmental perceived value, perceived consumption effectiveness, and environmental attitudes stimulate and shape environmentally friendly tourist behaviors. A sample survey of 406 tourists at Taibai Mountain National Nature Reserve in China was conducted, and structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to assess the causal relationships in the formation of environmentally friendly behaviors. The results show that environmental knowledge has a significant positive impact on environmental attitudes, environmental perceived value, and perceived consumption effectiveness. Further, environmental perceived value has a significant positive impact on environmental attitudes and environmentally friendly behavior; environmental attitudes and environmental behavior have a significant positive impact; environmental awareness has a significant positive impact on environmental behaviors; and perceived consumption effectiveness has a significant positive impact on environmentally friendly behaviors and is the most important direct predictor. Overall, the results reveal the formation mechanism of environmental friendly behavior, and provide a scientific basis and theoretical support for the stimulation and shaping of environmentally friendly tourist behaviors in ecotourism destinations.
The pro-environmental behavior of tourists (PEBT) can reduce the impact of tourism activities on the environment, which has attracted more and more attention from scholars. Based on the 159 articles of the PEBT from 2003 to the present in the “Web of Science” database, analyzing the overall characteristics, core knowledge, and knowledge evolution of this field with the help of CiteSpace and Vosviewer software, to systematically grasp the development panorama and find the future direction of the research on PEBT. The results show that economics, ecology, and psychology have a strong knowledge spillover effect for research on PEBT. Three regional research circles, eight-core scientific communities, and four core prior knowledge groups have formed for research on PEBT. The research content mainly focuses on exploring the measurement, forming mechanism, and influencing factors of PEBT. The effect of attitude or place attachment to PEBT has once been the research hotspot in this field. The research focus is to explore PEBT under multiple scenarios from the perspective of multi-disciplinary in recent years. Finally, a series of directions for future research on PEBT were put forward, aiming to bring some useful references to scholars.
Urban forests are more about people than trees. The positivist approach faces many obstacles in analyzing current urban forest-related issues; thus, this study adopted semantic differences and cognitive map approaches to evaluate the subjective preferences of citizens based on their spatial behavior. From December 2015 to November 2017, a three-year continuous public questionnaire was administered to a total of 450 citizens. Typical forest parks, suburban parks, and urban parks in Beijing were selected as research sites, and were analyzed respectively. This study comprehensively evaluated the perception characteristics and differences in the spatial images of urban forests by citizens in relation to different location conditions. Because these characteristics varied across individuals, the spatial cognition and familiarity of citizens with different types of urban forests were analyzed and compared. The perception of spatial images by citizens of different types of urban forests noticeably varied with respect to color and psychology. The perception of spatial images significantly varied with respect to gender, educational background, and income level, with individual characteristics being most closely related to the perception elements of urban forests in terms of space, color, style, and environment. Comparison of cognitive maps demonstrated clear differences in how citizens selected different types of urban forests. These differences were reflected in six types of cognitive maps and six familiar elements in the cognitive maps drawn by citizens.
In rural areas, indigenous knowledge plays an important role in the protection of forests and wildlife, but the rapid developments occurring in the society and economy impose several challenges to the continued role of indigenous knowledge. This study records how a Bulang village in the Yunnan Province of China uses indigenous knowledge to protect forests and wildlife and analyzes the underlying reasons. In this study, we found that even without specific punishment measures, local people effectively controlled the use of natural resources through moral constraints, public-opinion constraints, and worship rituals. Furthermore, they formed a forest- and wildlife-protection system with banyan trees and the Derbyan Parakeet at the core. This protection system is based on primitive nature worship and indigenous knowledge passed down orally from generation to generation. Such knowledge inheritance reflects the relationship between local people and nature. However, the lack of scientific guidance regarding ecological protection may lead to the destruction of the ecosystem. One such instance is illustrated using birdwatching tourism, for which the Bulang people are attracting birds by artificial feeding. This practice, while prescribed by indigenous knowledge, deviates from scientific knowledge on ecological protection. Therefore, we propose that there should be an intermeshing of indigenous and scientific knowledge to ensure the inheritance of and innovation in the former and effective biodiversity protection.
In this study, we analyzed the accidents associated with the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus Linnaeus) and issues pertaining to compensation in Xishuangbanna Nature Reserve from 2011 to 2018. We conducted interviews and a questionnaire survey with 217 villagers. The results show that: (1) the main Asian elephants damage is crop loss (more than 95% of the total damage), and the villagers suffer economic losses; (2) through the influence of traditional culture and natural education, the majority of local villagers still have a favorable impression of Asian elephants; (3) female respondents, those engaged in agricultural production, those who had experienced crop loss and those who had never seen Asian elephants had more negative attitudes toward Asian elephants; (4) most villagers believe that the Asian elephant population has increased in the past decade; and (5) the villagers are quite passive in the human–elephant conflict, and most of them do not take action. Finally, based on the research results, this paper discusses the causes of human elephant conflict and proposes targeted mitigation measures.
