Ciutadella harbor, in Menorca (Balearic Islands), is a well-known hotspot for the occurrence of meteotsunamis, i.e., tsunami-like sea level oscillations generated by atmospheric disturbances. This phenomenon represents a significant hazard for Ciutadella and other coastal locations of the Balearic Islands and the NE Iberian Peninsula, as meteotsunamis can cause flooding events and damage to harbor infrastructures. Nevertheless, scientific studies on meteotsunamis at places other than Ciutadella are scarce. In fact, this work is the first regional characterization of the phenomenon. It has been possible thanks to the availability of high-resolution (1-minute) tide gauge data from 27 stations. The analysis of the sea level records reveals that the impact of meteotsunamis is spatially heterogeneous, with large events occurring only in locations with a large resonant amplification. We have found that, aside from Ciutadella, other locations (Vilanova, Portocolom and Port de Sóller) suffer from frequent, large events. Additionally, large sea level oscillations occur simultaneously at different sites, as they are linked to synoptic-scale atmospheric patterns that can cover a significant fraction of the region. This also explains the shared meteotsunami seasonality, with most events occurring in late spring and summer. In some locations, however, the number of out-of-season events is not negligible; these events are shown to be linked to atmospheric phenomena other than those generating the typical summer meteotsunamis. Finally, the inference of amplitude relationships across sites has not been possible, because the amplitude of the oscillations is determined by local coastal topography and by small-scale features of the atmospheric disturbances.
Although the term 'Citizen Science' was coined in 1989 [Kerson, 1989], it gained momentum in 2009, when it first appeared in academic papers [Bergerot, 2022]. Over the past decade, a paradigm shift has occurred driven by the widespread adoption of mobile devices, DIY sensors, and open data platforms. These elements act as catalysts to democratize science with a significant impact on environmental monitoring [Coulson et al., 2021; Brenton et al, 2018]. In this context, the SECOSTA project emerged in 2018 as a pioneering citizen science initiative with a dual mission: (i) educating high school students about the impact of the climate crisis on coastal regions and (ii) actively engaging them in scientific research to fill observational gaps in coastal oceanography. SECOSTA involves the development of low-cost instrumentation based on ARDUINO open-source technology to collect crucial data for understanding coastal oceanography. After an initial phase in which educators are trained to guide students in constructing these devices, teachers initiate cross-disciplinary educational projects aided by a collection of educational resources selected by the SECOSTA team. Then, students actively participate in hands-on data collection, and their observations undergo rigorous processing, transforming them into valuable supplementary datasets for researchers. We currently offer five distinct devices tailored for secondary schools, each varying in complexity regarding construction and operation. This enables teachers to choose devices that align seamlessly with the characteristics of their participating students and the specific requirements of their educational projects. This inclusive approach has been pivotal to SECOSTA's success, fostering a harmonious partnership among researchers, regional government bodies, and secondary schools. The initiative has engaged over 4,000 students from 35 educational institutions. Notably, the SECOSTA2022 Student Conference marked a significant milestone, with over 140 students from 10 schools presenting year-long research findings. The success continued into the SECOSTA2023 Student Conference, where 170 students from 12 schools showcased the ongoing positive impact of the project. Our project exemplifies the practical implementation of technological advancements fostering citizen science initiatives in recent years. By providing secondary school students with accessible equipment, we enable them to actively participate in the scientific exploration and protection of the marine environment. To date, students have made substantial data contributions, including topographic records for 19 Balearic beaches and time-series data on sea level and water temperature, currently under analysis by the research team. This presentation not only unveils SECOSTA's phases, offering valuable insights for implementing citizen science initiatives in secondary schools, but also serves as a testament to SECOSTA's success. Additionally, it delves into the wider implications of marine technology, sparking a global movement where citizens actively contribute to addressing critical issues that threaten our society.
Meteotsunamis, or atmospherically generated tsunamis, can generate hazardous high frequency sea level oscillations in coastal regions. The inlet of Ciutadella, located on the western coast of Menorca (Balearic Islands), is a well-documented hotspot for meteotsunamis. In late spring and summer, Ciutadella frequently experiences sea level oscillations exceeding 1 meter, and occasional events of several meters have caused significant damage to boats and harbor infrastructures. Although Ciutadella has concentrated most of the attention, other locations across the Balearic Islands and the northeastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula also experience notable meteotsunamis.This study examines the occurrence of meteotsunamis from a regional perspective, using all the available high-resolution tide gauge data with a 1-minute sampling rate collected over the past decades. The dataset includes contributions from operational tide gauge networks managed by Puertos del Estado, SOCIB, and PortsIB, the VENOM ultra-dense research network (operated by UIB, IEO-CSIC and UPC) and an individual tide gauge maintained by Josep Pascual at l’Estartit. In total, the analysis encompasses data from 27 instruments spanning the Balearic Islands and the northeastern Iberian Peninsula, with some time series exceeding 17 years and more than 10 series exceeding a decade.Our regional analysis focuses on four key aspects: i) to characterize meteotsunami statistics across the study area including many locations that were not analysed before; ii) the contribution of the meteotsunami frequency band (1 min-2h) to sea level extremes; iii) a comparative analysis of meteotsunami events observed at different locations; and iv) the relationship between synoptic atmospheric patterns and meteotsunami occurrences. The findings reveal that high-frequency sea level oscillations are amplified in locations where topographic features favor the resonance of incoming meteostunami waves. While Ciutadella remains the primary hotspot, other locations such as Vilanova, Portocolom, and Port de Sóller also frequently experience significant meteotsunamis, which was not reported before. Moreover, we have found that sea level oscillations often occur simultaneously in several locations; the reason is that meteotsunamis are triggered by atmospheric disturbances associated with synoptic-scale meteorological patterns that cover a large part or the region, affecting several locations at the same time. Finally, the analysis highlights the challenges in predicting meteotsunami amplitudes. Their intensity is influenced not only by synoptic-scale atmospheric features but also by small-scale processes in the ocean and the atmosphere that are difficult to observe and predict. This complexity makes it challenging to establish robust amplitude relationships across locations or to issue accurate forecasts for the amplitude of meteotsunami events.
Ecological studies and restoration efforts in deep‐sea environments are a priority for international programs aimed at preserving biodiversity and recovering ocean health. These efforts, however, face technical challenges, particularly in the controlled placement of megafauna individuals near the seabed. Traditional methods, such as diving with autonomous breathing equipment, are generally impractical for large‐scale restoration beyond 50 m depth, while releasing organisms at the sea surface leads to high dispersion rates, reducing their chances of reaching the intended location. To address these challenges, we have developed and tested releaser devices equipped with enclosed compartments that mechanically open at a specified distance from the seabed, allowing for precise organism release. We designed and deployed various versions of these devices, each suited for different field applications, including active restoration actions and ecological studies requiring the safe deployment of individuals near the seabed. Technical descriptions of these devices are provided for replication and further adaptation. The devices demonstrated their effectiveness in active restoration efforts, particularly in the mass release of cold‐water corals. Additionally, they facilitated ecological studies involving the acoustic tagging of megafauna, allowing for improved monitoring of their daily and spatial behavior. The proposed animal release devices offer a practical solution for deep‐sea restoration and research, ensuring precise organism deployment at designated depths. Their design enhances efficiency in both marine conservation and scientific investigations.
Diapycnal mixing in the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence Zone (BMC) is assessed on the basis of microstructure measurements done as part of an April 2017 cruise, which explored the mesoscalar and regional frontal dynamics. Sampling was done down to 400 m in 11 locations on both sides of the BMC, over the slope and in the abyssal waters. Turbulent scales, non-dimensional numbers, energy dissipation rates and diapycnal eddy diffusivities are calculated, which allow us to assess the state of the small-scale turbulence in the frontal region. Active turbulence was present at all depths and stations, with high-dissipation patches ranging from several metres to a few tens of metres. The frontal zone is characterized by high energy dissipation and eddy diffusivity. The geometric mean eddy diffusivity for all stations and the entire water column is 7.0 x 10-4 m2 s-1.The mean values halve when only considering the more stratified seasonal thermocline, 3.8 x 10-4 m2 s- 1, and are twice larger south than north of the BMC.High dissipation rates coincide with high vertical shear, possibly related to the convergence of the two intense currents and/or the generation of internal waves by the associated mesoscalar and submesoscalar features. The layered structures related to intruding filaments favor double diffusive convection and salt fingering. Near-bottom mixing at the stations on the continental slope is possible related to shear-driven Kelvin-Helmoltz instabilities.

Shelf waters near large cities, such as Barcelona, are affected not only by meteorological episodes but also by anthropogenic influence. Scientists usually use data from on-site coastal platforms to analyze and understand these complex water ecosystems because remote sensing satellites have low spatiotemporal resolution and do not provide reliable data so close to the coast. However, platforms with conventional oceanographic instrumentation are expensive to install and maintain. This study presents the scientific adaptation and initial measurements from a “patí a vela”, which is a very popular unipersonal catamaran in Barcelona. This versatile sailing vessel has been adapted to contain several low-cost sensors and instruments to measure water properties. Here, we describe the setup of a multi-parameter prototype, and then focus on results obtained using a low-cost temperature profiler. First, the temperature data are compared and validated with another conventional oceanographic instrument used in monthly oceanographic cruises. Then, field measurements between July and November 2021 are used to explore the relationship between air and water temperature in the Barcelona coastal area, showing the seasonal evolution of the temperature profile. We conclude that citizen sampling from fully sustainable sailing boats may turn into an effective strategy to monitor the urban coastal waters.

Coastal regions will be highly impacted by climate change due to the rise of sea level and the impacts of warmer sea temperatures on coastal ecosystems. Moreover, for those regions whose economy is highly dependent on coastal activities, such as maritime transport or coastal tourism, the assessment of coastal vulnerability to climate change is crucial to guarantee their economic resilience. Since 2018, the SECOSTA project (https://secosta.wordpress.com/) has launched different citizen science-based programs (SOCLIMPACT, VENOM, DECIMATE) focused on monitoring the impact of climate change on coastal areas. The goal is twofold. On the one side, the SECOSTA project aims to make high school students aware of climate change and of the work developed by scientists. On the other hand, the students contribute to the acquisition of data that will be used in scientific studies afterwards. The SECOSTA project strategy is the following. First, different low cost and open source devices are designed to measure with a reasonable degree of accuracy several parameters (e.g. sea level, atmospheric pressure, beach topobathymetry, sea temperature). Second, high school teachers are trained in dedicated workshops to build those devices with their students. Third, the teachers develop educational multidisciplinary projects in their schools around a particular topic of interest (e.g. sea level rise, ocean warming...) involving the data acquisition. This phase is guided by the scientists who also provide educational resources to help in the development of the educational projects. Finally, the observations obtained by the students are processed by the scientists and incorporated in several research projects as additional datasets. The project has been successfully implemented creating a robust synergy among researchers, the regional government and secondary schools. To date, close to 20 different secondary schools have taken part in the different initiatives, involving more than 2,000 students per year in the construction of devices, acquisition and processing of data. In light of the success of previous terms, in 2022, the SECOSTA project is going to hold a conference that will serve as a forum for the participating high schools to present the results of their scientific studies. In this presentation we will describe the different steps of the project along with some recommendations about the lessons learned during these years for a successful deployment of citizen-science based projects in secondary schools.
