Innovation studies have shown a growing interest in collaborative approaches, particularly user co-creation within innovation spaces. This qualitative study delves into the intricate dynamics of user involvement in fostering user-centric innovation within living labs. Through interviews with 22 informants across 14 countries from 2021 to 2022, this study presents a comprehensive framework outlining four pivotal phases of involvement: recruitment, motivation, co-creation, and relation. Through a nuanced exploration of the critical factors shaping each, the research illuminates ongoing debates and consensus surrounding the orchestration of the co-creation process and the vital role of living labs in cultivating innovations. By offering insights into the co-creation process with users, the study underscores the approaches adopted by living labs to achieve sustainable outcomes in user-centric innovation. These findings provide valuable knowledge that can aid practitioners in navigating challenges related to user engagement, thereby advancing user-centric innovation initiatives.
Abstract The process of identifying relevant skills and practices underpinning the craft of innovation and of codifying this knowledge into courses and training programs dates back at least a century. Open innovation has brought new perspectives to this state of affairs, especially in terms of the theoretical underpinning, with emphasis shifting toward a systems approach. This chapter traces the history of the evolution of innovation management as a body of knowledge and shows the way in which open innovation has changed what is taught at a conceptual level and the tools and techniques through which these concepts can be translated into management practice.

PurposeThe view that supply chain learning (SCL) has become a fundamental capability that supply chains must employ to innovate and improve their financial, technological, operational, environmental and social performance is widely accepted. However, the SCL phenomenon is still understudied and not fully understood by scholars, decision-makers and government representatives. This article aims to make sense of the existing literature and to identify important research directions that require further attention.Design/methodology/approachThis article reviews the diversity of SCL in the literature, proposes a typology of such a phenomenon, provides an overview of key articles in the literature and identifies a series of recommendations for the future development of the field.FindingsThis article combines two fundamental dimensions from the literature (i.e. SCL driver and SCL network) to produce a typology of four types of SCL: Captive, Consortium, Selective and Distributed.Practical implicationsThe typology proposed here offers an important framework for supply chain decision-makers to rely on when implementing SCL initiatives. The implications of each type of SCL offer a robust rationale for decision-makers to adopt the most appropriate type of SCL or combinations of SCL types, given each situation. In addition, the typology supports policy-makers in further understanding the SCL phenomenon and creating effective innovation, economic development and sustainability policies through supply chains.Originality/valueThis article offers a novel typology that the authors hope will help scholars to advance the field of SCL in order to understand this important phenomenon. There is no good/bad/better/worse SCL type in the proposed typology, but the critical element for the success of SCL efforts is the level of fit between the type of SCL, the type of knowledge to be created and diffused, and the outcome supply chains aim to achieve with that learning effort. In addition, the authors coin the construct of "the learning supply chain", which refers to a supply chain that learns constantly by employing all four types of SCL simultaneously.

Values-based innovation management is developing into a vibrant field of studies and practice with increasing relevance for innovation managers and entrepreneurs, providing a powerful toolbox of new methods and applications as well as having societal impact. We survey the state-of-the-art discussions in the field, including related concepts and methods and values-based approaches in areas such as innovation consulting and education, business modelling and entrepreneurship. As an introduction to the papers in IJIM’s Special Issue on Managing Values for Innovation, this editorial paper revisits and repositions some widespread assumptions about the nature, functions and potential of values in innovation contexts. We show to what extent values are an inevitable moment of innovation-related activities, requiring contributions from diverse stakeholders in normative, strategic and operational management dimensions. We illustrate their practicality to promote rather than handicap innovation and clarify their potential to change and assume different meanings rather than being static entities. The explanatory power of a values-based approach, its generative potential and its emancipatory impact motivate further research and development. Future avenues for research and development include impact management studies, attention to different levels of values and advancing the methodology and available tools to manage values for innovation in order to achieve more desirable outcomes.

Recent research suggests that sustainability-oriented innovation may require different circumstances within organizations than traditional innovation research has revealed. More specifically, nature-inspired innovation (NII) has become increasingly common in recent years, and yet it is not fully understood how it is perceived within adopting organizations. This study addresses this gap by identifying how individual accounts collectively form organizational narratives that shape sustainability-oriented innovation (SOI) processes within MNCs and three SOI narratives of amongst teams implementing NII in seven multinational corporations. Cases were selected for their application of NII approaches including biomimicry, cradle to cradle, circular economy, and industrial ecology (collectively referred to as nature-inspired innovation). Using data generated from semi-structured interviews (n = 52) and NII project documents, three types of organizational narratives related to SOI were identified: Ambiguous, Accountable, and Aspirational. Narratives of SOI in organizations adopting NII are strongly influenced by overall stage of corporate sustainability; the engagement of leadership, and the innovation infrastructure and culture.
There is a pressing need for innovation in the humanitarian sector, faced as it is with ever-growing demands for it to respond to the plight of people affected by both human and natural disasters. These are arguably growing in scale, scope, and complexity, and look likely to continue to do so. However, despite being referred to more explicitly in the last ten years, the understanding of humanitarian innovation by practitioners, policymakers, and academics is still very much in its infancy. To help address this issue, this paper drawn on and extends the innovation ecosystems literature to present a systematic framework for analysing innovation in the humanitarian sector. This framework is illustrated using evidence from an interview-based survey of ‘informed’ users and a set of in-depth case studies.
ABSTRACT Objective: there is an ongoing need for businesses to strive to maintain ideals within environmental, economic, and social values - commonly known as the triple bottom line. Manufacturing as a sector has advanced drastically and the literature on sustainable business models in this sector has emerged. The purpose of this paper is to analyze sustainable business models in manufacturing and the approaches and challenges faced in creating and implementing them. Methods: this paper uses a systematic approach to review the literature. We identify sustainable business models and classify them within different industry areas while strategies and challenges emerge from the literature. Results: the findings indicate that there is some empirical work done in investigating the social and environmental dimensions of sustainability in manufacturing. Overall, there is an ongoing transition to sustainable business models in varying divisions of industry. However, the creation and delivery of sustainable economic value is still unexplored. Conclusions: the research provides insight to researchers and practitioners on how organizations implement sustainability while delivering value to their stakeholders. It also provides new avenues for conducting research in unexplored strategies of sustainable business modeling.

Nature-inspired innovation (NII) is an increasingly common innovation strategy, yet little is known about its implementation within corporate innovation settings. This paper asks what factors influence the application of NII in corporate contexts. It combines theoretical perspectives from innovation adoption and sustainability-oriented innovation to explore factors that influence the implementation of NII. Six case studies of multinational corporations applying NII were analyzed, using data collected through semistructured interviews (N= 45), a review of internal project documents, and publicly available materials. Results indicate that successful implementation depends upon the characteristics of the innovation context, decision-making units, and the innovation itself, such as an advanced organizational progression of corporate sustainability, senior leadership support of NII, design expertise within innovation teams, flexible innovation management processes, and collaboration with outside enabling stakeholders. NII should be viewed as a longer-term investment in developing organizational sustainability culture rather than a one-off approach to innovation.
