The disposition of end-of-life CRTs, computers and other electronic equipment is an emerging environmental issue on which Florida, like Massachusetts and a few other states, has taken action. Florida has focused upon CRTs as the most problematic material in the electronics waste stream due to their lead content. CRTs are the second largest source of lead in Florida’s municipal solid waste stream just behind lead acid batteries. Like Massachusetts, Florida’s strategy includes regulatory streamlining, electronics recycling infrastructure development, time-limited state funding and possibly disposal restrictions to encourage the recycling of end-of-life electronics and especially CRTs. The major difference between Florida’s and Massachusetts’ strategies is the regulatory interpretation. Florida’s interpretation may be a better fit for some states since U.S. EPA Region IV has given preliminary approval to its interpretation of how RCRA applies to CRT management while U.S. EPA Region I has not accepted the Massachusetts approach of exempting unbroken CRTs from RCRA by rule. The lessons learned from both Florida’s and Massachusetts’ strategies and programs for managing end-of-life electronics can be helpful as other states begin to deal with this emerging environmental issue
Hemoglobin A 2 is often elevated in /3-thalassemia and decreased in a-thalassemia. This might be due to hemoglobinsubunit-subunit affinityvariation.It has been inferred from the study of abnormal hemoglobins that the a subunits have higher affinity for /3subunits than for 5 subunits. However, only in one study has the affinity of a, /3,and 8 subunits for each other been measured. In this work we have attempted to measure the hemoglobin subunit-subunit affinity with somewhat different approach, i.e., hybridization of hemoglobin Aand A 2. It is shown that hybridizationand recombination of equal amounts of hemoglobins Aand A2 lead always to the formationof morehemoglobinA than A2.Incubation of pure a, /3,and 8 subunits forms morehemoglobinA than A2 as the availabilityof a subunits declines. It is concluded that hemoglobin a subunits have approximately four-fold higher affinity for 0 subunits than for the 8 subunits under these experimental conditions. This subunit-subunit affinity difference, which has been attributed to the varia- tion in molecular electrostatic charges, explains the variation of hemoglobin A2 levels in thalassemia syndromes.
It is shown that blocking anticyclones are closely related to positive anomalies of 5‐day mean 500‐mb geopotential height satisfying criteria involving amplitude, latitude and time of year. Anomalies meeting the criteria are called “blocking signatures”. The criteria are used objectively to construct a Catalogue that identifies the pentad, location and magnitude of each blocking signature that occurred from 1 January 1946 to 31 December 1978. Through the use of an empirically derived displacement threshold, the Catalogue is designed to identify sequences of signatures corresponding to the life history of blocking episodes. The probability that a sequence which is 2 pentads or longer in duration will be related to a blocking episode is greater than 90%. In a subsequent paper, the authors will present and interpret the spatial and temporal distributions of blocking signatures during the 33‐year period.
23.-- An injunction was served on the Baltimore Baseball Exhibi- tion Company today restraining it from suspending J. Williams Holmes, an out- fielder, and preventing his earning his livelihood. Ten days Is given President Hanlon to show cause why a permanent injunction should not be granted. The suit was filed in Circuit Court No. 2 by Conway W. Sams, It was directed against President and Manager Edward Hanlon and Treasurer Harry W. Von der Horst. Judge Phelps signed an order for tho club to show cause before September why the Injunction should not be issued. In order to keep within the provisions of the national board's findings, Manager Hanlon has already served a notice of suspension on Holmes and the Injunction proceeding, It is safe to say, will not be warmly contested by the baseball com- pany. Manager Hanlon does not Intend to allow Freedman the slightest loophole to escape paying his fine, but at the same time he is determined that Holmes shall not suffer. "Burt" Hollidny Won't Play. Linton came to America for the purpose of riding against Jimmy Michael, and has been disappointed in the two races which have already been run. but hfs disap- pointment is greater now that Michael declines to ride him again. Our agreement called for a series of best two in three races, and we have both won one race,. leaving the rubber to be run later. Only very recently, it has become evident that soil hydrophobicity is wide-spread in the world. Generally, soil hydrophobicity is caused by the presence of organic compounds, like humic and fulvic acids and fatty waxes, which are able to coat individual soil particles and aggregates. These organic compounds might become water repellent below a certain critical soil water content due to molecular conformational changes. Above the critical soil moisture content a soil behaves wettable and below it hydrophobic. Due to the presence of hydrophobic coatings, soil water retention functions show typical hysteresis loops in the range below the critical soil water content. Generally, it can be stated that wetting branches below the critical soil moisture content are very steeply curved with low water entry values, while wetting branches above the critical soil water contents are generally gently curved with much higher water entry values. Due to these typical water retention branches, perturbations at an infiltrating wetting front might grow into vertically directed preferential flow paths in initially dry soil (i.e. under conditions below the critical soil moisture content), causing an accelerated downward transport of water and solutes in this case. In the opposite situation, with initial soil water contents exceeding the critical soil water value, perturbations at an infiltrating wetting front might vanish during infiltration, leading to stable wetting fronts. A numerical two-dimensional water flow and transport model, including hysteresis, has been used to simulate the unstable and stable wetting front cases. Simulation results will be presented, together with extensive field evidence of unstable and stable wetting fronts in a water repellent sandy soil.
