Lameness is a highly prevalent and economically important health problem in British dairy cattle. Previous studies have highlighted a delay between lameness onset and farmer detection. This lag, combined with the low sensitivity of clinical diagnosis, limits early intervention, thereby worsening both production and animal welfare outcomes. Notably, the negative effects of lameness can persist even after clinical recovery. Understanding the burden of health issues is essential for informed decision making at the farm level and beyond. This study quantifies the impact of hoof-health disorders on milk yield in British dairy cattle. Data were obtained from 6,050 cows across a nonrandom sample of 11 farms, including repeated daily milk yield records, totaling ∼2.1 million cow-days. A mixed linear model was developed to account for the time-dependent, correlated nature of milk yield data, using a first-order autoregressive correlation structure. An event study design allowed investigation of milk yield trajectories before and after clinical diagnosis. Farmer-reported data were used to identify hoof-related lameness events. After adjusting for mastitis, stage of lactation, parity, farm, season, and breed, cows with a hoof-health event produced on average 1.47 kg/d less milk than healthy cows. For severe cases, the average daily reduction reached 2.05 kg. The event study revealed that milk yield declines were detectable before clinical diagnosis and persisted after treatment. These findings underscore the impact of hoof-health disorders on dairy productivity and highlight the need for earlier detection as it could help farmers mitigate milk losses, reduce treatment costs, and enhance animal welfare.
Foreword Lameness in dairy cattle is a high prevalence condition with significant negative impact on the welfare and economics of the dairy herd. Most lameness is attributable to four main conditions: sole bruising (also referred to as sole haemorrhage), sole ulcer, white line disease and digital dermatitis. Understanding of the pathogenesis of major claw horn diseases has undergone a transformation in the last 20 years, with a shift from a primary nutritional aetiology to a biomechanical one. This has led to significant research into factors relating to claw biomechanics and interventions targeting the inflammatory process. Even for infectious conditions, the benefit of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to cow welfare and recovery cannot be underrated. In this roundtable discussion, the panel explore the clinical relevance of the findings of research exploring biomechanics and managing inflammation.
The importance of pain relief in farm animals has never been further up the agenda for modern food production and farm animal practice. This has been driven by increased awareness amongst farmers, veterinary surgeons and consumers. This article looks at the practical use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in farm animal practice for both adults and youngstock. The basic mode of action of NSAIDs is discussed and some of the evidence base that has been growing over the use of NSAIDs in cattle. It also highlights some of the present requirements of some of the retailers and auditing bodies.
This article sets out some of the main considerations and challenges for managing the veterinary input in large dairy herds. It focuses on the way that the veterinarian can satisfy the demands of the modern day dairy farmer while facilitating an expert team on the farm, including the targeted use of paraprofessionals working in conjunction with the vet to provide a cost-effective but professional service.
The authors of this article are members of the Cattle Lameness Academy, part of Synergy Farm Health, a veterinary practice covering Dorset, Somerset and East Devon. Following on from a recent and comprehensive review of foot trimming technique ( Manning et al, 2016 ), the current authors were invited to discuss the evidence base for current foot trimming interventions, claw horn lesion treatments and specifically how these can inform clinical practice. The evidence pertaining to claw horn lesion treatments was reviewed by Potterton et al (2012) although several key studies have been published since. Additionally, a recent review of how statistics have improved our understanding of the lameness disease process has also been published ( Randall et al, 2018a ). The purpose of the current article is therefore to provide the practitioner with a guide through key pieces of literature, highlight the problems that arise from gaps in the literature and discuss the methods that we can adopt to manage lameness when the reviewed literature is scarce.

The past decade has seen a major increase in the recognition of pain in cattle by both farmers and veterinary surgeons, along with a trend towards a more active approach to pain management. This has resulted in an increase in the use of analgesic medication across a wide variety of clinical scenarios, both as an adjunct to potentially painful treatments and routine procedures and as a response to painful disease states.

The dry period is now recognised as a critical time for the control of clinical and sub-clinical mastitis in dairy cattle. Infections that occur, or that are not cured, during the dry period often result in clinical mastitis or raised somatic cell counts in early lactation. There is known to be large variability between herds in the patterns of dry period intramammary infections (IMI) and yet, until recently, there has been no information on farm determinants of the risk of IMI, other than in relation to dry cow treatments. In this paper we consider new research on cow characteristics, farm facilities and herd management strategies during the dry period in relation to clinical mastitis and raised somatic cell counts (SCC) in early lactation. We then describe, within a Bayesian framework, the concept of synthesising existing knowledge with new data to facilitate decision-making on dry cow management for individual farms.
