Intersections among equity concerns, bias, and teacher noticing are becoming increasingly prevalent in mathematics education research. Thus far, such scholarship has focused on varying aspects of the mathematical activity and resources, but has yet to address the aural dimension of mathematical moments and how students' accents influence teachers' interpretations. In this study, we examine how and to what extent does bias manifest within teachers' (in‐service and preservice) professional noticing with respect to variations in students' accent? Although prior research has answered different topics concerning professional noticing and asset/deficit perspectives, there has been limited investigation regarding the accent and dialect into professional noticing scenarios. Or, in simpler terms, the sound of mathematical activity and how it shapes noticing practice. We found that the largest percentage of asset‐oriented responses were precipitated by the noticing case where a student used Standard American English (SAE) accent. Shifting to the audio‐track of the noticing case to African American Vernacular English (AAVE) accent case precipitated the smallest percentage of asset interpreting scores with an almost 6% difference at 38.3%. An Appalachian (APP) accent case was closer to the AAVE accent case with 40.4% of respondents having an asset interpreting score for the student's mathematical thinking.

Teacher noticing and related variants have ascended in prominence among the mathematics education research community. While the component processes of such noticing (e.g., attending, interpreting and deciding) have been cast as interrelated, capturing the relationships amongst the components has been more elusive. We focused on the component processes of teacher noticing with particular attention given to interrelatedness. Specifically, we were interested in how and the extent to which the component processes of professional noticing (attending, interpreting, deciding) are thematically connected when preservice elementary teachers are engaged in an assessment approximating professional noticing. We refer to this thematic linkage in this paper as coherence. Our findings suggest a complex interplay between the creation and continuation of themes when enacting professional noticing, and the quality of such noticing.

Through the use of rich examples, we examine the non-verbal ways in which teachers and students may communicate with one another. We will explore how gesture may be used to clarify and enrich interactions in the mathematics classroom.
This study examines potential bias with respect to perceived gender and ethnicity in preservice teachers’ professional noticing of children’s mathematical thinking. The goal of the study was to explore how, and to what extent bias emerges within pre-service teachers’ professional noticing of children of differing perceived races and genders. Our findings suggest that bias tends to emerge in the interpreting phase of professional noticing; however, such emergence did not appear to vary in conjunction with the perceived ethnicity and gender of the student. Further, our findings suggest that the inclusion of visual imagery (i.e. photos) influence the manifestation of bias among preservice teachers to some degree when professionally noticing in the context of a written case.
This paper examines the implementation of an instructional module on preservice elementary teachers' professional noticing of children's mathematical thinking. The module focuses on professional noticing skills through the content focus of early algebraic reasoning and uses complex video vignettes from whole class instruction in authentic elementary mathematics classrooms. Findings indicated that two of the three components of professional noticing (attending and interpreting) showed statistically significant increases in a treatment group that did not occur in a comparison group. The deciding component remains a challenge that warrants further research.
Teacher noticing and the related construct of professional noticing of children's mathematical thinking have proven to be fertile ground for education researchers. Professional noticing is a framework for a teaching practice consisting of three component parts: attending, interpreting, and deciding. The current study investigates the conceptions and enactment of professional noticing of 24 elementary and middle grades teachers participating in professional learning programs that incorporated professional noticing. These teachers demonstrated a wide range of interpretations of professional noticing which varied in consistency with respect to the literature in this area. This diversity of conceptions is seen as a consequence of teachers having different definitions and scopes of application for professional noticing. This study adds to current discussions about the meaning and role of professional noticing by considering the perspective of practitioners, a group whose input is often secondary to education researchers but whose conceptions and enactment of such noticing is critical for student success.
Abstract Background:Multi-parameter tumour gene expression assays (MPAs) are widely used to estimate individual patient residual risk and to guide chemotherapy use in hormone-sensitive, HER2-negative early breast cancer. The TAILORx trial supports MPA use in a node-negative population. Evidence for MPA use in node-positive breast cancer is limited. OPTIMA (Optimal Personalised Treatment of early breast cancer usIng Multi-parameter Analysis) (ISRCTN42400492) aims to validate MPAs as predictors of chemotherapy sensitivity in a largely node-positive breast cancer population where prospective RCT (Randomised Controlled Trial) evidence is lacking. Methods: OPTIMA is a partially blinded multi-center RCT with an adaptive two-stage design. The main eligibility criteria are women and men age 40 or older with resected ER-positive, HER2-negative invasive breast cancer and up to 9 involved axillary lymph nodes. Randomisation is to standard management (chemotherapy and endocrine therapy) or to MPA-directed treatment using the Prosigna (PAM50) test. Those with a Prosigna tumour score (ROR_PT) >60 receive standard management whilst those with a low score (≤60) are treated with endocrine therapy alone. Endocrine therapy for pre-menopausal women includes ovarian suppression. The co-primary outcomes are (1) Invasive Disease Free Survival (IDFS) and (2) cost-effectiveness of test-directed treatment. Secondary outcomes include IDFS in patients with low-score tumours and quality of life. An integrated qualitative recruitment study addresses challenges to consent and recruitment and will build on experience from the feasibility study that a multidisciplinary approach at sites is important for recruitment success. Tumour blocks will be banked to allow evaluation of additional MPA technologies. Recruitment of 4500 patients over 5 years will permit demonstration of 3% non-inferiority of test-directed treatment, assuming 5-year IDFS of 85% with standard management, equivalent to a HR of 1.22. Inclusion of patients from the feasibility study will increase the power to test for non-inferiority. Results: The OPTIMA main trial opened in January 2017. Overall recruitment (including the feasibility study) will reach 1000 in August 2018. Recruitment in Norway will commence in July 2018. In the elementary mathematics classroom, the pursuit of meaning may take many forms, including how we communicate with our physical movements. Often, mathematical communication is organized around verbalization. For example, teachers are often encouraged to facilitate productive mathematical discourse among students (CCSSI 2010; Stein et al. 2008). Similarly, the spoken words of the teacher carry great importance as she or he elects to revoice certain strategies as stated and perhaps verbally modify the language of others to enhance their clarity for the entire class. Such verbal interactions are, indeed, quite important regarding the construction of meaning; but we cannot neglect the nonverbal, physical manner in which we communicate with students. As we will see in subsequent examples, such nonverbal communication plays a role in students' construction of mathematical arguments and critiquing the reasoning of others—the third of the Common Core's (CCSSI 2010, pp. 6-7) Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMP 3)—as well as teachers' facilitation of meaningful mathematical discourse—the fourth of NCTM's Mathematics Teaching Practices (NCTM 2014, p. 10). To put it succinctly, it is well worth our while to consider how we, as a learning community, talk with our hands.
Abstract Histological grade remains an independent predictor of outcome for invasive breast cancer. The internationally accepted standard grading system is the Elston and Ellis grading system based on a local hospital (Nottingham) cohort treated between 1951-1973. Histological grade, with nodal status, tumour size and receptor measurements (ER, PgR, HER2) give important information even in the context of current molecular testing for breast cancer. In 2009 we proposed a simplified approach to the EE system based on evidence from another hospital series (Thomas et al Histopathology 2009 DOI 10.1111/j.1365-2559.2009.03429.x). Here we report a second validation of this approach using a large phase III clinical trial cohort the Tamoxifen Exemestane Adjuvant multicentre Trial. A single pathologist (EM) regraded over 4200 cases using a single H&E slide from the TEAM pathology study. Individual scores (1-3) were provided for tubule formation, nuclear pleomorphism and mitotic count and summed to provide the EE score (3-9) resulting in a final grade of 1, 2 or 3 for each case. As previously reported the Simplified Binary Scoring system (SBS) reorganizes this data such that each component is given a score of 1 or 2 with a sum ranging from 3-6. In the current analysis we compared the impact of this revised grading system on patient outcome. Of 4264 centrally regraded tumours in the TEAM pathology cohort, EE scores for tubular formation were 1 in 102 cases (2.4%), 2 in 503 cases (11.8%) and 3 in 3659 (85.8%). For nuclear pleomorphism only 2 cases were EE score 1 (0.05%), 3117 were score 2 (73.1%) and 1146 score 3 (26.9%). For Mitotic count 3423 (80.3%) were scored 1, 707 (16.6%) scored 2 and 134 scored 3 using the EE system. As previously observed, most/all EE categories could be captured using a simple binary system (SBS, see Table 1). For the SBS score the higher scores were enriched for GG High cases. We show a novel grading system can provides a potentially simple and more reproducible approach to immunohistochemical grading. Comparisons with molecular grading approaches may suggest improved concordance between novel grading approaches and molecular systems. Further comparisons with outcome and molecular signatures will be presented. This chapter describes the implementation of a traditional (face-to-face) and an online module aimed at developing preservice elementary teachers' (PSETs') professional noticing skills and the extent to which participation in these modules affected their attitudes toward mathematics. Using the Attitudes Toward Mathematics Inventory (ATMI; Tapia & Marsh, 2004), statistical analyses revealed significant increases in each of the instrument's four factors (value, enjoyment, motivation, and self-confidence) for those enrolled in a traditional experience, while the online participants experienced significant change in only two factors (enjoyment and self-confidence). Overall, both groups experienced significant improvements in attitudes toward mathematics with no significant differences in the changes between the two groups.
Background: The ARTemis trial previously reported that addition of neoadjuvant bevacizumab (Bev) to docetaxel (D) followed by fluorouracil, epirubicin and cyclophosphamide (D-FEC) in HER2 negative breast cancer improved the pathological complete response (pCR) rate. We present disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) with central pathology review.Patients and methods: Patients were randomized to 3 cycles of D followed by 3 cycles of FEC (D-FEC), +/- 4 cycles of Bev (Bev+D-FEC). DFS and OS were analyzed by treatment and by central pathology reviewed pCR and Residual Cancer Burden (RCB) class.Results: A total of 800 patients were randomized [median follow-up 3.5 years (IQR 3.2-4.4)]. DFS and OS were similar across treatment arms [DFS hazard ratio (HR) = 1.18 (95% CI 0.89-1.57), P = 0.25; OS HR = 1.26 (95% CI 0.90-1.76), P = 0.19). Both local pathology report review and central histopathology review confirmed a significant improvement in DFS and OS for patients who achieved a pCR [DFS HR = 0.38 (95% CI 0.23-0.63), P<0.001; OS HR = 0.43 (95% CI 0.24-0.75), P = 0.003]. However, significant heterogeneity was observed (P = 0.02); larger improvements in DFS were obtained with a pCR achieved with D-FEC than a pCR achieved with Bev_D-FEC. As RCB class increased, significantly worse DFS and OS was observed (P for trend<0.0001), which effect was most marked in the ER negative group.Conclusions: The addition of short course neoadjuvant Bev to standard chemotherapy did not demonstrate a DFS or OS benefit. Achieving a pCR with D-FEC is associated with improved DFS and OS but not when pCR is achieved with Bev_D-FEC. At the present time therefore, Bev is not recommended in early breast cancer.
Background: We have previously shown lymphocyte density, measured using computational pathology, is associated with pathological complete response (pCR) in breast cancer. The clinical validity of this finding in independent studies, among patients receiving different chemotherapy, is unknown.Patients and methods: The ARTemis trial randomly assigned 800 women with early stage breast cancer between May 2009 and January 2013 to three cycles of docetaxel, followed by three cycles of fluorouracil, epirubicin and cyclophosphamide once every 21 days with or without four cycles of bevacizumab. The primary endpoint was pCR (absence of invasive cancer in the breast and lymph nodes). We quantified lymphocyte density within haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) whole slide images using our previously described computational pathology approach: for every detected lymphocyte the average distance to the nearest 50 lymphocytes was calculated and the density derived from this statistic. We analyzed both pre-treatment biopsies and post-treatment surgical samples of the tumour bed.Results: Of the 781 patients originally included in the primary endpoint analysis of the trial, 609 (78%) were included for baseline lymphocyte density analyses and a subset of 383 (49% of 781) for analyses of change in lymphocyte density. The main reason for loss of patients was the availability of digitized whole slide images. Pre-treatment lymphocyte density modelled as a continuous variable was associated with pCR on univariate analysis (odds ratio [OR], 2.92; 95% CI, 1.78-4.85; P<0.001) and after adjustment for clinical covariates (OR, 2.13; 95% CI, 1.24-3.67; P = 0.006). Increased pre- to post-treatment lymphocyte density showed an independent inverse association with pCR (adjusted OR, 0.1; 95% CI, 0.033-0.31; P<0.001).Conclusions: Lymphocyte density in pre-treatment biopsies was validated as an independent predictor of pCR in breast cancer. Computational pathology is emerging as a viable and objective means of identifying predictive biomarkers for cancer patients.
For the past two decades, the development of preservice elementary teachers’ mathematical knowledge and skills has been central to mathematics education research. Two frameworks that researchers have drawn upon to examine such development are mathematical knowledge for teaching and professional noticing (of children’s mathematical thinking). We have identified shared theoretical space between these two frameworks, and we hypothesize that effective professional noticing occurs at the intersection of developed mathematical knowledge for teaching and a high level of responsiveness with respect to the mathematical activities of students.
Abstract Background: Patients with high risk early breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy are frequently treated with both anthracycline and taxane-based chemotherapy exposing patients to multiple toxicities. Molecular predictors of response to specific chemotherapy agents are emerging. Abnormal duplication of the centromeric region of chromosome 17 (CEP17) and either Topoisomerase 2A (TOP2A) gene amplification or deletion, have been identified in a recent meta-analysis as potent markers of anthracycline sensitivity (Bartlett et al JCO 2015). The ROSCO study has been designed to prospectively test the utility of these markers to select anthracycline or taxane based chemotherapy in the neoadjuvant setting. Key entry criteria: Confirmed invasive breast cancer; centrally confirmed CEP17 duplication and TOP2A status; primary tumour>2cms or documented axillary node metastasis Exclusion criteria include breast cancer with good risk features i.e. Grade 1/2 ER PR rich (Q score 7/8), HER2 negative tumours. Study treatment: Patients will undergo central testing for CEP-17 and TOP2A and be randomised to 4 cycles of FEC100 (5-Flourouracil 500mg/m2 Epirubicin 100mg/m2 cyclophosphamide 600mg/m2) or 4 cycles of TC (Docetaxel 75mg/m2 Cyclophosphamide 600 mg/m2). Following chemotherapy patients will undergo surgical resection, (Institutional standard). Patients with residual invasive cancer will receive 4 cycles of the alternative chemotherapy to that received in the neoadjuvant setting. HER2 positive patients will receive concurrent trastuzumab and continue standard adjuvant trastuzumab. . Patients with biopsy proven axillary node metastases will undergo combined blue dye and radioisotope tracer guided sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) and axillary lymph node clearance as a single procedure during breast surgery. Adjuvant endocrine and radiation therapy will be Institutional standard Endpoints: The primary endpoint is pathological complete response (no invasive disease in breast or axilla (pCR)). Secondary endpoints include: clinical and radiological response; rate of breast conservation; patient reported outcomes; safety, tolerability and long term outcomes. In patients with proven nodal involvement the false negative rate of a negative post treatment SLNB compared to axillary node clearance will be reported. Sample size and stratification: 1050 patients will be randomised in a 1:1 ratio stratified by nodal status, ER, HER2, and biomarker status (CEP-17 amplified or TOP2A amplified/deleted) vs normal (CEP-17 normal TOP2A normal). Analysis: The primary analysis will assess the interaction between the treatment effect and CEP17/TOP2A status to determine if a differential treatment effect exists between CEP17/TOP2A Normal and CEP17/TOP2A Abnormal patients. pCR will be analysed using a logistic regression model including co-variates for treatment, CEP17/TOP2A status and an interaction term of the two effects Sample size is based on the ability to detect an absolute improvement in pCR in the biomarker abnormal group from 21% in the TC treated group to 30% in the FEC treated group. Background: We investigated the impact of follow-up duration to determine whether two immunohistochemical prognostic panels, IHC4 and Mammostrat, provide information on the risk of early or late distant recurrence using the Edinburgh Breast Conservation Series and the Tamoxifen vs Exemestane Adjuvant Multinational (TEAM) trial. Methods: The multivariable fractional polynomial time (MFPT) algorithm was used to determine which variables had possible non-proportional effects. The performance of the scores was assessed at various lengths of follow-up and Cox regression modelling was performed over the intervals of 0–5 years and >5 years. Results: We observed a strong time dependence of both the IHC4 and Mammostrat scores, with their effects decreasing over time. In the first 5 years of follow-up only, the addition of both scores to clinical factors provided statistically significant information ( P <0.05), with increases in R 2 between 5 and 6% and increases in D-statistic between 0.16 and 0.21. Conclusions: Our analyses confirm that the IHC4 and Mammostrat scores are strong prognostic factors for time to distant recurrence but this is restricted to the first 5 years after diagnosis. This provides evidence for their combined use to predict early recurrence events in order to select those patients who may/will benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy.
