This presentation is designed to connect clinicians who may be unaware to macro- and microeconomic drivers that contribute to youth substance use, particularly cannabis. This discussion will be helpful for clinicians to contextualize risk and seriousness of use based partially on how the youth they treat are obtaining cannabis in all of its forms.
There is a critical need to provide evidenced-based psychotherapy training to child and adolescent psychiatrists and trainees. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a humanistic, client-centered, and evidence-based psychotherapy designed for behavior change that can be adopted for use in almost any clinical setting. This Workshop will provide hands-on training in MI theory and fundamental skills.

Evidenced-based psychotherapies are foundational in the treatment of any substance use disorder (SUD). Despite research demonstrating effectiveness, adoption of evidenced-based psychotherapies is hardly uniform. Many medical providers are underinformed and undertrained in the use of these interventions.
Motivational interviewing is an evidence-based, widely applicable, and learnable form of psychotherapy. The main objectives of this day-long workshop are as follows: 1) to learn and practice motivational interviewing skills; and 2) to learn and practice skills related to teaching motivational interviewing.
