Purpose:This study focused on identifying key components and dimensions of positive patient experiences perceived by family members of nursing home residents in South Korea, which may inform strength-based quality improvement in nursing home care. Methods:Data were collected from May 8, 2023, to July 18, 2023, through interviews with 19 family members of nursing home residents aged 65 years or older who had lived in the facility for at least 30 days. Interview data were used to develop empirical statements on the nature of residents' experiences as perceived by family members. These data were then analyzed using concept mapping to identify components of positive patient experiences from the perspectives of family members of nursing home residents in Korea. Results:Multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analysis yielded 59 core statements, two dimensions, and four clusters of positive patient experiences. The two dimensions were type of support (physical vs. emotional) and centrality of care (resident-centered vs. family-centered). The four clusters of positive patient experiences were "facility management focused on quality of life," "active communication and engagement," "respect and trust," and "professional and personalized care." Conclusion:These findings provide insight into the experiences valued by family members of older adults in nursing homes. The concept map may inform development of a patient experience index tailored to family members of nursing home residents.
Purpose: This study aimed to assess the effects of virtual reality (VR) cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)—as compared to those of face-to-face Basic Life Support (BLS) education—on nursing students’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Methods: Forty-four participants were recruited from nursing schools in Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea, and randomized into two groups: VR CPR (experimental group) and BLS (control group). The participants’ CPR knowledge, cardiac compression quality, self-efficacy, confidence, and attitudes toward education were evaluated. Results: At enrollment, the control and experimental groups showed similar results for all the variables. After the intervention, results showed that the cardiac compression score and the hand position accuracy in the experimental group were significantly higher than in the control group. Meanwhile, knowledge, self-efficacy, and confidence were improved in both groups, though there was no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: The study results showed that VR CPR education is just as effective as face-to-face BLS training for nursing students. Therefore, developing high-quality VR educational content in the future is necessary.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting the risk of cardiovascular disease among postmenopausal Korean women. Methods: This postmenopausal period-stratified analysis used secondary data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2016 to 2018. We selected 1,465 participants with all the relevant data for analysis. The Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Results: Age, subjective health status, body mass index, and triglyceride level were the factors that influenced the risk of cardiovascular disease for women with a postmenopausal period ≤5 years, whereas age, subjective health status, household income, body mass index, and triglyceride level were the factors that influenced the risk of cardiovascular disease for women with a postmenopausal period >5 years and ≤10 years. Conclusion: Planning health promotion strategies to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease in women must consider the differences among women according to the menopausal status and postmenopausal period.
Various sociodemographic and behavioral health factors have been reported to influence the development of metabolic syndrome (Mets). In addition, the effects of various sociodemographic and health related characteristics on single-person households appear to be influenced by sex. Considering the surge in the number of single-person households globally, we conducted a sex-stratified analysis of the factors that affect the development of Mets among single-person Korean households. We used secondary data from the 2016–2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) for this study. A total of 1830 participants (aged ≥19 years) without any missing data were analyzed in this study. The chi-square test and multiple logistic regression were used to analyze the study data. The results of the multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the significant risk factors for Mets in men were age, body mass index (BMI), subjective health status, subjective recognition of body shape, household income, and sleep hours, whereas age, BMI, subjective health status, exercise, and sleep hours were the significant risk factors for Mets in women. Specialized sex-specific health policies and programs are needed to reduce the prevalence of Mets in single-person households.

This study was undertaken to validate and assess the reliability of the Korean version of professional quality of life scale (K-ProQOL) that measures the compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue and burnout among clinical nurses in Korea. We conducted an internal consistency reliability and construct validity by applying confirmatory factor analysis using SPSS WIN (24.0) and AMOS (18.0). Survey data were collected from 210 nurses working at three tertiary hospitals located in Seoul. Reliable internal consistency was achieved for the K-ProQOL, with a Cronbach's alpha for the total scale and three sub scale values of 0.72-0.90. Factor loadings on three subscales of the 30 items considered ranged from 0.25 to 0.82. The model was validated by confirmatory factor analysis (RMSEA 0.05-0.1, GFI >0.7, CFI >0.7). The findings of this study demonstrate that the K-ProQOL has satisfactory construct validity and reliability to measure compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue and burnout among clinical nurses in Korea. This is the first study assessing the validity and reliability of the Korean version of professional quality of life scale for clinical nurses in Korea.
Purpose The aim of this study is to determine the impact of myofunctional therapy support program (MTSP) based on self-efficacy theory compared to no support during myofunctional therapy (MT) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Methods Thirty-one patients with OSA were randomized into two groups: 12 weeks of treatment with the MTSP developed in this study (experimental group) and one education session of MT (control group). Patients were evaluated at the beginning and the end of the study using questionnaires (self-efficacy scale, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, snoring intensity and frequency, dry mouth) and polysomnography. Results The control (n = 15) and experimental (n = 16) groups had similar results for all variables at study entry. The control group showed no significant change in any variables during the study period. In contrast, the experimental group showed a significant increase in self-efficacy 61.38 ± 9.50 to 65.56 ± 10.89 ( p = 0.020) and a significant decrease in apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) 19.51 ± 11.41 to 14.11 ± 9.13 (p = 0.039), daytime sleepiness 9.88 ± 3.84 to 7.56 ± 3.42 (p = 0.028), snoring intensity 5.57 ± 3.13 to 4.44 ± 2.68 (p = 0.008), and dry mouth 6.44 ± 3.14 to 3.63 ± 2.33 (p = 0.005), compared to the baseline. No significant change in lowest SaO2 ( p = 0.969), sleep quality (p = 0.307), and snoring frequency ( p = 0.321) during the study period. Conclusions The intensive and interactive intervention of MTSP improved the self-efficacy of OSA patients, and consequently, resulted in sign and symptom relief, such as AHI, daytime sleepiness, snoring and dry mouth. The MTSP was dedicated to the nurse practitioner to improve the way to dispense the MT. This research has implications for the successful treatment of OSA.
