As a result of the medical progress in the field of pediatric oncology, childhood cancers are seen as a chronic life-threatening disease rather than an acute or terminal disease. While methods used in cancer treatment increase the recovery rate, on the other hand they may cause adverse symptoms on the child and family. Fatigue is one of them which affects negatively the quality of life of the children with cancer, therefore, it is important to evaluate its effect. Fatigue should be identified and evaluated quickly pre-treatment as well as during and after, while being controlled with a multidisciplinary approach and applying appropriate nursing care.
Objectives: There are barriers related to the clinical use of p alliative care. The aim of the study is to examine the nurses’ perceptions of palliative care and the obstacles ın practices. Methods:The sampling of the study was composed of 120 nurse s who accepted to participate in the study. In order to collect the data, a questionnaire was used , which contained questions and expressions about t he demographic data and palliative care. Our study dem onstrated that most of the participants emphas ized that they would like to receive training about palliativ e care. The data were analyzed with SPSS version 15 .00 for Windows. Descriptive statistics were presented as f requencies, percentages, means and standard deviati ons. A p value <.05 was considered statistically significant . Results:The most important obstacles were insufficient education, communication and health policies. %57.5 of them state that nurses do not realize the pallia tive care requirements; %66.6 of them think that do ctors do not realize the palliative care requirements; %55 of th em think that nurses and %65 of them think that doc tors do not have enough knowledge about palliative care; %6 0.9 of them state that nurses and %68.3 of them sta te th t doctors have lack of communication with patients/fa milies; %78.3 of them specify that the number of he alth professionals is insufficient Conclusion: It has been recommended that in-service palliati ve care training should be planned for nurses at regular intervals and health policy should be organ ized.
Herein we reported a 7-year-old child with RET proto-oncogene c634 mutation. Her mother had been diagnosed with medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), and treated six years ago. Heterozygous mutation of the RET proto-oncogene at c634 had been detected in her mother. Genetic analysis showed the presence of the same mutation in our patient. Thyroid functions were normal. Serum calcitonin level was found mildly elevated. Parathormone (PTH) and carcinoembrionic antigen (CEA) levels were normal. Prophylactic thyroidectomy and sampling of cervical lymph nodes were performed. Histopathologic examination revealed hyperplasia in thyroid C cells, and reactive lymphadenopathy. The risk of MTC has been reported 100% through the life of patients with RET protooncogene mutation. It has been reported that particularly patients with c634 mutation have more risk of occurence of metastatic and progressive/recurrent MTC. Prophylactic "thyroidectomy, cervical lymph node dissection" before 5-years-of-age should be considered for these patients.
The use of complementary and traditional medicine (CTM) in Middle Eastern countries is widespread, including among patients with cancer. Perspectives of oncology healthcare professionals (HCPs) in this region regarding the integration of CTM within conventional supportive cancer care were explored.
