Spectrometers based on high-finesse optical cavities have proven to be powerful tools for applied and fundamental studies. Extending this technology to the deep cryogenic regime is beneficial in many ways: Doppler broadening is reduced, peak absorption is enhanced, the Boltzmann distribution of rotational states is narrowed, all unwanted molecular species disturbing the spectra are frozen out, and dense spectra of complex polyatomic molecules become easier to assign. We demonstrate a cavity-enhanced spectrometer fully operating in the deep cryogenic regime down to 4 K. We solved several technological challenges that allowed us to uniformly cool not only the sample but also the entire cavity, including the mirrors and cavity length actuator, which ensures the thermodynamic equilibrium of a gas sample. Our technology well isolates the cavity from external noise and cryocooler vibrations. This instrument enables a variety of fundamental and practical applications. We demonstrate a few examples based on accurate spectroscopy of cryogenic hydrogen molecules: accurate test of the quantum electrodynamics for molecules; realization of the primary SI standards for temperature, concentration and pressure in the deep cryogenic regime; measurement of the H_2 phase diagram; and determination of the ortho-para spin isomer conversion rate.
The hydrogen deuteride (HD) molecule is an important deuterium tracer in astrophysical studies. The atmospheres of gas giants are dominated by molecular hydrogen, and simultaneous observation of H$_2$ and HD lines provides reliable information on the D/H ratios on these planets. The reference spectroscopic parameters play a crucial role in such studies. Under thermodynamic conditions encountered in these atmospheres, the spectroscopic studies of HD require not only the knowledge of line intensities and positions but also accurate reference data on pressure-induced line shapes and shifts. Our aim is to provide accurate collision-induced line-shape parameters for HD lines that cover any thermodynamic conditions relevant to the atmospheres of giant planets, i.e., any relevant temperature, pressure, and perturbing gas (the H$_2$/He mixture) composition. We perform quantum-scattering calculations on a new highly accurate ab initio potential energy surface, and we use scattering S-matrices obtained this way to determine the collision-induced line-shape parameters. We use the cavity ring-down spectroscopy for validation of our theoretical methodology. We report accurate collision-induced line-shape parameters for the pure rotational R(0), R(1), and R(2) lines, the most relevant HD lines for the investigations of atmospheres of the giant planets. Besides the basic Voigt-profile collisional parameters (i.e. the broadening and shift parameters), we also report their speed dependences and the complex Dicke parameter, which can influence the effective width and height of the HD lines up to almost a factor of 2 for giant planet conditions. The sub-percent-level accuracy, reached in this work, considerably improves the previously available data. All the reported parameters are consistent with the HITRAN database format, hence allowing for the use of HAPI for generating the beyond-Voigt spectra of HD.
We demonstrate a mirror position actuator that operates in a wide temperature range from room temperature to a deep cryogenic regime (10 K). We use a Michelson interferometer to measure the actuator tuning range (and piezoelectric efficiency) in the full temperature range. We demonstrate an unprecedented range of tunability of the mirror position in the cryogenic regime (over 22 μm at 10 K). The capability of controlling the mirror position in the range from few to few tens of microns is crucial for cavity-enhanced molecular spectroscopy techniques, especially in the important mid-infrared spectral regime where the length of an optical cavity has to be tunable in a range larger than the laser wavelength. The piezoelectric actuator offering this range of tunability in the cryogenic conditions, on the one hand, will enable development of optical cavities operating at low temperatures that are crucial for spectroscopy of large molecules whose dense spectra are difficult to resolve at room temperature. On the other hand, this will enable us to increase the accuracy of the measurement of simple molecules aimed at fundamental studies.
We investigate collisional line-shape effects that are present in highly accurate experimental spectra of the 3-0 S(1) and 2-0 Q(1) molecular hydrogen absorption lines perturbed by helium. We clearly distin-guish the influence of six different collisional effects (i.e.: collisional broadening and shift, their speed dependencies and the complex Dicke effect) on the shapes of H-2 lines. We demonstrate that only a very specific combination of these six contributions, determined from our ab initio calculations, gives unprece-dentedly good agreement with experimental spectra. If any of the six contributions is neglected, then the experiment-theory comparison deteriorates at least several times. We also analyze the influence of the centrifugal distortion on our ab initio calculations and we demonstrate that the inclusion of this effect slightly improves the agreement with the experimental spectra. We demonstrate a new method for populating line-by-line spectroscopic databases with beyond-Voigt line-shape parameters, which is based on ab initio quantum scattering calculations. We report a comprehensive dataset for the benchmark system of He-perturbed H-2 (we cover all the rovibrational bands that are present in the HITRAN spectroscopic database). We generate the entire dataset of the line-shape parameters (broadening and shift, their speed dependence, and the complex Dicke parameter) from fully ab initio quantum-scattering calculations. We extend the previous calculations by taking into account the centrifugal distortion for all the bands and by including the hot bands. The results are projected on a simple structure of the quadratic speed-dependent hard-collision profile. We report a simple and compact formula that allows the speed-dependence parameters to be calculated directly from the generalized spectroscopic cross sections. For each line and each line-shape parameter, we provide a full temperature dependence within the double-power-law (DPL) representation, which makes the dataset compatible with the HITRAN database. The temperature dependences cover the range from 20 to 1000 K, which includes the low temperatures relevant for the studies of the atmospheres of giant planets. The final outcome from our dataset is validated on highly accurate experimental spectra collected with cavity ring-down spectrometers. The methodology can be applied to many other molecular species important for atmospheric and planetary studies. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
We report a comprehensive dataset of beyond-Voigt line-shape parameters (pressure broadening and shift coefficients, their speed-dependences, and the complex Dicke parameters) for all electric dipole and quadrupole transitions within the ground electronic state in He-perturbed HD that are present in the HITRAN database. The parameters are determined from generalized spectroscopic cross-sections which we obtain by solving ab initio quantum scattering problem using the close-coupling formulation and the state-of-the-art potential energy surface of the HD-He interaction. We parametrize the temperature dependence of the line-shape parameters with double-power-law representation (DPL), recommended for the HITRAN database. Comparison with the analogous results for the H-2-He system reveals a strong isotopologue dependence. (C) 2021 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
Consumption of raw or inadequately processed marine fish may result in anisakidosis - a zoonotic disease caused by larvae of the parasitic nematodes of the family Anisakidae (anisakiasis when caused by members of the genus Anisakis (Nematoda: Anisakidae)), commonly found in a variety of marine fish species all over the world. Most cases of anisakidosis have been detected in the residents of Japan and South Korea, which results from the tradition of eating raw and semi-raw fish dishes. However, the disease is now increasingly often diagnosed in other parts of the world, including Europe (mainly in Spain and Italy). In Poland, no cases of human infection with anisakid nematodes have been detected so far. In this study, we report the first case of gastric anisakiasis in Poland, in a 59-year-old female patient, after eating raw Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). The parasite was identified as the third-stage larva of Anisakis simplex sensu stricto on the basis of morphology and molecular analysis. The larva was still alive and causing pain until it was removed, which occurred more than 5 weeks after infection. The described case prove that anisakiasis should be considered as a potential cause of gastrointestinal tract ailments following the consumption of seafood in countries where no cases of this zoonosis have been reported to date.
We report ab initio calculations of generalized spectroscopic cross-sections for hydrogen deuteride perturbed by helium. From these calculations, collisional line-shape parameters are deduced for the HD electric dipole transitions: from R(0) to R(5) and from P(1) to P(6) in the 0-0 to 5-0 bands. These parameters are necessary for a proper interpretation of HD spectra from the atmospheres of gas giants. We demonstrate that the centrifugal distortion cannot be ignored, not only for pure rotational lines but also for rovibrational lines when one aims at sub-percent accuracy of the collisional line-shape parameters. We report the most accurate, to the best of our knowledge, measurement of the position of the weak quadrupole S(2) 2-0 line in $ {{\rm D}_2} $D2. The spectra were collected with a frequency-stabilized cavity ringdown spectrometer (FS-CRDS) with an ultrahigh finesse optical cavity ($ {\cal F} = 637 000 $F=637000) and operating in the frequency-agile, rapid scanning spectroscopy (FARS) mode. Despite working in the Doppler-limited regime, we reached 40 kHz of statistical uncertainty and 161 kHz of absolute accuracy, achieving the highest accuracy for homonuclear isotopologues of molecular hydrogen. The accuracy of our measurement corresponds to the fifth significant digit of the leading term in quantum electrodynamics (QED) correction. We observe $ 2.3\sigma $2.3σ discrepancy with the recent theoretical value.
