This essay expands upon recent scholarship that compares poststructuralist European thinkers with Kenneth Burke by comparing Derrida concept of undecidability with Burke notion of ambiguity. The article begins with an examination of the Derridean notion of undecidability followed by a review of Burke's treatment of the concept of ambiguity. The article concludes with a brief comparative discussion of undecidability and ambiguity that clarifies the differences and similarities, and suggests implications for critical analysis.
This article extends the work of conceptual revision of the narrative paradigm in order to more directly and completely account for the inventional possibilities of new narratives, the rhetorical revision of old narratives, and the appeal and acceptance of improbable narrative accounts. It does so by reconceptualizing Burke's concept of identification in the narrative paradigm by expanding identification's critical range. Reconceptualizing identification in the narrative paradigm further expands narrative rationality beyond "the logic of good reasons,'' provides a theoretical mechanism that accounts for and complements prior theoretical extensions advanced in revision of the narrative paradigm, and provides greater conceptual flexibility for the critical use of narrative in light of poststructuralism. Reconceptualizing the role of identification in the narrative paradigm enriches our understanding of how narratives foster beliefs, attitudes, and actions by accounting more fully for the range of the symbolic resources and processes of identification.
The Ferron Sandstone of east-central Utah has world-class outcrops of dominantly fluvial-deltaic, Turonian-Coniacian-aged strata deposited along the margins of the rapidly subsiding Cretaceous foreland basin. The Ferron consists of a series of stacked, transgressive-regressive cycles which form an eastward-thinning wedge. The Ivie Creek area contains abrupt facies changes in two of these cycles referred to as Kf-1 and Kf-2. Kf-1 consists of unusual river-dominated delta deposits that prograde southeast to northwest across the Ivie Creek area. Progradation is parallel or onshore to the regional shoreline trend. Distinctive, steeply inclined bedsets or clinoforms, defined by bounding surfaces are classified into four facies: proximal, medial, distal, and cap. Clinoform facies are based on grain size, sedimentary structures, bedding thickness, inclination angle, and stratigraphic position. These deposits accumulated on an arcuate delta lobe which was prograding into a deeper water, fully marine bay. The main delta, which we interpret to have been located to the east and northeast, created a protected embayment in the northwest part of the Ivie Creek area. The Kf-1 clinoforms represent deposition into the embayment fed by river channels from the southeast. Kf-2 is represented by wave-modified deltaic deposits that generally coarsen east to west, and consist of shoreface and distributary complex facies. These relatively clean, sand-rich deposits accumulated along a local north-south shoreline trend defined by a landward pinchout of marine shoreface facies, as opposed to the more common regional northwest-southeast shoreline trend recognized in other Ferron cycles above and below Kf-2. In the western part of the Ivie Creek area, eastto northeast-flowing distributary channels deposited large amounts of sand in north-south-trending distributary-mouth bars. Shallow- to moderate-depth marine conditions existed in the eastern part of the area. An uncommon transition from shoreface, to bay, to coastal plain/swamp occurred during the late stage of Kf-2 deposition. As a reservoir analog, the Ferron Sandstone in the Ivie Creek area displays variations in sedimentary structures and lithofacies that influence both its compartmentalization and permeability. Bounding layers like those observed on outcrop were identified from core and geophysical well-log data. These features can be incorporated into reservoir models and simulations for oil field development and secondary or enhanced oil recovery programs.
This report covers research activities for the second half of the second project year (October 6, 2001, through April 5, 2002). This work includes description and analysis of cores, correlation of geophysical well logs, reservoir mapping, petrographic description of thin sections, cross plotting of permeability and porosity data, and development of horizontal drilling strategies for the Little Ute and Sleeping Ute fields in Montezuma County, Colorado. Geological characterization on a local scale focused on reservoir heterogeneity, quality, and lateral continuity, as well as possible compartmentalization, within these fields. This study utilizes representative core, geophysical logs, and thin sections to characterize and grade each field's potential for drilling horizontal laterals from existing development wells.
Utah oil fields have produced over 1.2 billion barrels (191 million m{sup 3}). However, the 13.7 million barrels (2.2 million m{sup 3}) of production in 2002 was the lowest level in over 40 years and continued the steady decline that began in the mid-1980s. The Utah Geological Survey believes this trend can be reversed by providing play portfolios for the major oil-producing provinces (Paradox Basin, Uinta Basin, and thrust belt) in Utah and adjacent areas in Colorado and Wyoming. Oil plays are geographic areas with petroleum potential caused by favorable combinations of source rock, migration paths, reservoir rock characteristics, and other factors. The play portfolios will include: descriptions and maps of the major oil plays by reservoir; production and reservoir data; case-study field evaluations; summaries of the state-of-the-art drilling, completion, and secondary/tertiary techniques for each play; locations of major oil pipelines; descriptions of reservoir outcrop analogs; and identification and discussion of land-use constraints. All play maps, reports, databases, and so forth, produced for the project will be published in interactive, menu-driven digital (web-based and compact disc) and hard-copy formats. This report covers research activities for the first quarter of the second project year (July 1 through September 30, 2003). This work included (1) describing the Conventional Southern Uinta Basin Play, subplays, and outcrop reservoir analogs of the Uinta Green River Conventional Oil and Gas Assessment Unit (Eocene Green River Formation), and (2) technology transfer activities. The Conventional Oil and Gas Assessment Unit can be divided into plays having a dominantly southern sediment source (Conventional Southern Uinta Basin Play) and plays having a dominantly northern sediment source (Conventional Northern Uinta Basin Play). The Conventional Southern Uinta Basin Play is divided into six subplays: (1) conventional Uteland Butte interval, (2) conventional Castle Peak interval, (3) conventional Travis interval, (4) conventional Monument Butte interval, (5) conventional Beluga interval, and (6) conventional Duchesne interval fractured shale/marlstone. We are currently conducting basin-wide correlations to define the limits of the six subplays. Production-scale outcrop analogs provide an excellent view, often in three dimensions, of reservoir-facies characteristics and boundaries contributing to the overall heterogeneity of reservoir rocks. They can be used as a ''template'' for evaluation of data from conventional core, geophysical and petrophysical logs, and seismic surveys. Outcrop analogs for each subplay except the Travis interval are found in Indian and Nine Mile Canyons. During this quarter, the project team members submitted an abstract to the American Association of Petroleum Geologists for presentation at the 2004 annual national convention in Dallas, Texas. This essay responds to critical theory's challenge for rhetorical criticism to focus on the ways in which the exercise of power influences rhetorical practices in the public sphere. It explores how the relegation of union worker's interests to private institutional entities can result in the institutional subordination of those interests and how this subordination significantly diminishes the range of public discourse and contested issues. It analyzes a case where a group of local steelworkers in the Pittsburgh area, working in conjunction with a small group of Protestant ministers, sought to gain public support for the redress of grievances and how their subordination by the United Steel Workers' union and the Lutheran Church influenced their rhetorical activities. His method of approaching existing, already-recorded facts with an open and wide-ranging mind would often have been thwarted by the sheer lack of facts, and the predominance of imaginary elements, in both of those disciplines.
