Background: Since 2014, all Australian jurisdictions have progressively amended legislation to authorise pharmacists to administer vaccines, evolving from restricted pilots to an essential public health pillar. Objective: This review analyses the longitudinal evolution of pharmacist-administered vaccinations (PAVs), documenting changes in authorised vaccines, age eligibility, and regulatory frameworks across all Australian jurisdictions. Methods: A retrospective review of Australian jurisdictional legislation, regulations, and policy documents was undertaken. Searches included official legislative registers, Government Gazettes, Health Department protocols, and professional guidance published by Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) and The Pharmacy Guild of Australia between 2014 to 2026. Documents were independently reviewed by five authors, followed by secondary verification and consensus-based adjudication to resolve discrepancies and confirm findings. Results: PAVs scope was expanded from a single influenza pilot in 2014 to include over 21 vaccine-preventable diseases by 2026. The COVID-19 pandemic catalysed rapid reform, leading to the standardisation of age eligibility (largely ≥5 years). A landmark milestone occurred in 2025 when South Australia enabled pharmacists to administer any vaccine within their professional scope. Conclusion: Legislative reforms have significantly enhanced vaccine accessibility. However, jurisdictional fragmentation persists. National harmonisation, using a competency-based model similar to South Australia, is recommended to streamline delivery and optimise public health outcomes.
Background Pharmacists are increasingly involved in vaccine delivery, yet evidence specific to pediatric populations remains limited. Most existing studies focus on adults, leaving uncertainty about pharmacists’ impact on children’s vaccination uptake. Therefore, this review aimed to evaluate the impact of pharmacist interventions on vaccination uptake among children. Methods A systematic search of four major databases was conducted through July 2025. Quantitative comparative studies assessing pharmacists’ contributions to improving vaccination uptake among children were included. Qualitative studies, case reports, and studies lacking child-specific data were excluded. Study selection, data extraction, and quality assessments were performed independently by two reviewers. Results Of 8,368 records identified, six studies met the inclusion criteria. The evidence showed that pharmacist interventions resulted in increased vaccination uptake. These interventions included screening, recommendation, education, and direct immunization. All included studies were conducted in the United States and primarily employed pre-post designs. A meta-analysis was not conducted due to heterogeneity in populations, interventions, and outcome measures. Conclusion Pharmacists’ involvement in vaccination services shows a positive association with children’s vaccination uptake. However, the certainty of this evidence remains limited by non-randomized study designs and potential bias. As all studies were conducted in the United States, the findings may not apply globally. Further high-quality, controlled studies across diverse international health systems are needed to better characterize the association and inform policy development.
BACKGROUND:While some review studies have assessed the role of pharmacists in vaccination services, none have comprehensively assessed their impact specifically on improving vaccination uptake among older adults across all major recommended vaccines. These include COVID-19, herpes zoster, influenza, pneumococcal disease, and respiratory syncytial virus. This systematic review aimed to generate evidence on the effectiveness of pharmacist-led interventions in promoting the uptake of these vaccines among individuals aged 60 years and older. METHOD:Relevant publications up to June 2024 were comprehensively searched across six databases: Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The pooled effect size was estimated using a random-effects model with a 95 % confidence interval (CI). Subgroup analyses were used to evaluated differences in effect sizes according to pharmacist roles. RESULT:A total of 10,998 studies were initially identified, of which 13 met the inclusion criteria. In eight pre-post studies, pharmacist involvement in immunisation services significantly increased vaccine uptake among older adults, yielding a pooled relative risk (RR) of 3.29 (95 % CI: 2.01-5.39). Similarly, in five randomised studies, pharmacist-led interventions were significantly associated with increased vaccine uptake, with a pooled RR of 3.04 (95 % CI: 1.46-6.34). CONCLUSION:This review demonstrates the substantial impact of pharmacist-led interventions on vaccination uptake among older people. The findings suggest that the greatest improvements occur when pharmacists serve as educators, facilitators, immunisers, and advocators. Healthcare policymakers and organisations should prioritise and implement comprehensive pharmacist-led strategies to enhance vaccine uptake in this population.
(1) Background: Chronic hyperglycaemia is a cause of vascular damage and other adverse clinical outcomes in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Emerging evidence suggests a significant and independent role for glycaemic variability (GV) in contributing to those outcomes. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) provides valuable insights into GV. Unlike in type 1 diabetes mellitus, the use of CGM-derived GV indices has not been widely adopted in the management of T2DM due to the limited evidence of their effectiveness in predicting clinical outcomes. This study aimed to explore the associations between GV metrics and short- or long-term vascular and clinical complications in T2DM. (2) Methods: A rapid literature review was conducted using the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, and Scopus databases to seek high-level evidence. Lower-quality studies such as cross-sectional studies were excluded, but their content was reviewed. (3) Results: Six studies (five prospective cohort studies and one clinical trial) reported associations between GV indices (coefficient of variation (CV), standard deviation (SD), Mean Amplitude of Glycaemic Excursions (MAGE), Time in Range (TIR), Time Above Range (TAR), and Time Below Range (TBR)), and clinical complications. However, since most evidence came from moderate to low-quality studies, the results should be interpreted with caution. (4) Conclusions: Limited but significant evidence suggests that GV indices may predict clinical compilations in T2DM both in the short term and long term. There is a need for longitudinal studies in larger and more diverse populations, longer follow-ups, and the use of numerous CGM-derived GV indices while collecting information about all microvascular and macrovascular complications.
Pharmacists have been included in general practice teams to provide non-dispensing services for patients. In Australia, pharmacists’ role in general practice has been slowly expanding. However, there is a paucity of research to explore patients’ opinions toward pharmacist-led services in general practice. This study aimed to assess patient awareness, perceived needs, and satisfaction with these services. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with a purposeful sample of patients who visited six general practices in the Australian Capital Territory that included pharmacists in their team. The survey was informed by the literature and pre-tested. The survey was distributed to two samples: patients who had seen a pharmacist and those who had not seen a pharmacist. Of 100 responses received, 86 responses were included in the analysis: patients who had seen a pharmacist (n = 46) and patients who had not seen a pharmacist (n = 40). Almost all the patients who utilised pharmacist-led services were highly satisfied with those services. Among patients who had not seen a pharmacist, 50% were aware of the existence of general practice pharmacists. Patients who had visited the pharmacist rated higher scores for perceived needs. Patient satisfaction towards the pharmacist-led services in general practices was very high, and patients supported the expansion of these services. However, awareness of the availability of general practice pharmacist services could be improved.
Early stroke diagnosis remains a big challenge in healthcare partly due to the lack of reliable diagnostic blood biomarkers, which in turn leads to increased rates of mortality and disability. Current screening methods are optimised to identify patients with a high risk of cardio-vascular disease, especially among the elderly. However, in young adults and children, these methods suffer low sensitivity and specificity and contribute to further delays in their triage and diagnosis. Accordingly, there is an urgent need to develop reliable blood biomarkers for triaging patients suspected of stroke in all age groups, especially children and young adults. This review explores some of the existing blood biomarkers, as single biomarkers or biomarker panels, and examines their sensitivity and specificity for predicting stroke. A review was performed on PubMed and Web of Science for journal articles published in English during the period 2001 to 2021, which contained information regarding biomarkers of stroke. In this review article, we provide comparative information on the availability, clinical usefulness, and time-window periods of seven single blood biomarkers and five biomarker panels that have been used for predicting stroke in emergency situations. The outcomes of this review can be used in future research for developing more effective stroke biomarkers.
(1) Background: My Health Record (MHR) is a relatively new nationwide Australian digital health record system accessible by patients and a range of healthcare professionals. Pharmacists will be key contributors and users of the MHR system, yet little is known about the perceived barriers and benefits of use. (2) Objective: To explore pharmacists' perspectives related to potential benefits and barriers associated with use of MHR. (3) Methods: An online survey was developed and face-validated. The survey was advertised to Australian pharmacists on pharmacy professional bodies' websites. This was a cross-sectional study using an anonymous questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the distribution of the data. Chi-square, Kendall's tau coefficient (tau-c) and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to examine the relationships where appropriate. (4) Results: A total of 63 pharmacists completed the survey. The majority of respondents worked in a metropolitan area (74%), and the most common workplace setting was community pharmacy (65%). Perceived benefits identified by responders include that the use of MHR would help with continuity of care (90%), and that it would improve the safety (71%) and quality (75%) of care they provided. Importantly, more than half of pharmacists surveyed agreed that MHR could reduce medication errors during dispensing (57%) and could improve professional relationships with patients (57%) and general practitioners (59%). Potential barriers identified by pharmacists included patients' concerns about privacy (81%), pharmacists' own concern about privacy (46%), lack of training, access to and confidence in using the system. Sixty six percent of respondents had concerns about the accuracy of information contained within MHR, particularly among hospital and general practice pharmacists (p = 0.016) and almost half (44%) had concerns about the security of information in the system, mainly pharmacists working at general practice and providing medication review services (p = 0.007). Overall satisfaction with MHR varied, with 48% satisfied, 33% neither satisfied nor dissatisfied, and 19% dissatisfied, with a higher satisfaction rate among younger pharmacists (p = 0.032). (5) Conclusions: Pharmacists considered that the MHR offered key potential benefits, notably improving the safety and quality of care provided. To optimize the use of MHR, there is a need to improve privacy and data security measures, and to ensure adequate provision of user support and education surrounding the ability to integrate use of MHR with existing workflows and software.
Background: The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) specifies substances that competitive sportspersons are not allowed to take. Some of these substances are contained in common medicines used in everyday medical practice and could be used by athletes by accident. Objectives: This study aimed to explore pharmacists’ knowledge and confidence in guiding athletes about the use of medicines in professional sport. Methods: Registered pharmacists in Australia were invited to participate in an online survey. The survey had five domains and aimed to identify pharmacists’ demographic information, interest in sport, familiarity with WADA guidelines, knowledge on prohibited drug classes, and their opinion about the role of pharmacists in educating athletes on medication use. Descriptive statistics were provided and where appropriate, Chi-square, Mann–Whitney and independent t-test were used to identify potential associations and difference between means. Results: One hundred and thirty-five pharmacists (response rate of 10.6%) completed the survey, with the majority indicating that they were not confident in advising athletes on medication use. Although most respondents believed that pharmacists have a role in the education of athletes to help avoid unintentional doping, only about a quarter indicated that they had sufficient knowledge to advise athletes. About one-half of the respondents could provide fully correct answers when asked to identify the WADA status of some commonly used drugs. Conclusions: The results of the survey indicate that upskilling is required to enable pharmacists in Australia to provide accurate medication advice to professional athletes.
INTRODUCTION:In recent decades the role of the Australian community pharmacist has evolved to focus primarily on pharmaceutical care provision. Despite this, compounding remains an important product service offered by pharmacists. The aim of this study was to qualitatively describe the current integration of training in compounding within Bachelor of Pharmacy courses in Australia. Methods: The Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Agency website was searched to identify eligible university courses. Subsequently, the educational providers' homepages were consulted, and Bachelor of Pharmacy handbooks and curricula perused. All relevant information regarding training in compounding was extracted. Results: In total, 16 Bachelor of Pharmacy courses were identified. All of these contain compounding training in their curricula, including laboratory classes. Most curricula have units specifically dedicated to compounding and drug formulation. Three universities offer a curriculum which is organ-systems based, and include compounding relevant to the individual organ systems. Discussion and Conclusions: In Australia, the training in compounding is well integrated into pharmacy curriculum and is more emphasised than in many other developed countries. This is congruent with the International Pharmaceutical Federation's needs-based approach to local pharmacy education. In Australia there is a need for pharmacists to routinely dispense simple compounded products. Further research is required to evaluate Australian pharmacy graduates' compounding abilities and how best to promote the achievement of the required knowledge and skills to enable simple compounding.
QT interval prolongation is associated with torsade de pointes and sudden cardiac death. QT prolongation can be caused by many drugs that are commonly prescribed in elderly residential aged care populations. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of use of QT-prolonging drugs and to identify interventions made by pharmacists to reduce the risk of QT prolongation when conducting medication reviews in aged care. A retrospective analysis of 400 medication reviews undertaken by Australian pharmacists in aged care settings was conducted. The assessment included the risk of QT prolongation due to prescribed medications and other risk factors and the recommendations made by pharmacists to reduce the risk of QT prolongation. There was a high prevalence of the use of QT-prolonging medication, with 23% of residents (92 out of 400) taking at least one medication with a known risk of QT prolongation. Amongst the 945 prescribed drugs with any risk of QT prolongation, antipsychotics were the most common (n = 246, 26%), followed by antidepressants (19%) and proton pump inhibitors (13%). There appeared to be low awareness amongst the pharmacists regarding the risk of QT prolongation with drugs. Out of 400 reviews, 66 residents were categorised as high risk and were taking at least one medication associated with QT prolongation; yet pharmacists intervened in only six instances (9%), mostly when two QT-prolonging medications were prescribed. There is a need to increase awareness amongst pharmacists conducting medication reviews regarding the risk factors associated with QT prolongation, and further education is generally needed in this area.

It is 20 years since the US Food and Drug Administration approved the first successful monoclonal anticancer antibody, trastuzumab. The therapeutic utility of monoclonal antibodies in cancer is often limited by partial clinical responses and the development of tumour resistance. An expanding strategy, to be reviewed here, to overcome the limited response and resistance to monotherapy utilizes concurrent treatment with two synergistic monoclonal antibodies.
Cardamom oil is used widely for flavouring in food, as medicine, in aromatherapy and as a taste enhancer in tobacco products as well as used in fragrance industry.Cardamom Oil is the essential oil of green cardamom fruit produced by steam distillation from the seeds after they've undergone a long drying and de-husking process.In the traditional distillation process, the oil collected on top of a separator half filled with wateras a whole.The main components contributing to flavour and fragrance properties of cardamom oil are alpha-pinene, eucalyptol, terpenes and a group of phenols occur at different stages and in different quantities during steam distillation.These components are released from the seeds during distillation based on its volatility.This study investigates the collection of cardamom oil in different fractions.Organoleptic as well as physical and chemical analysis including Gas Chromatograph and Mass Spectroscope shows that there is a clear fractionation of the components during distillation, which helps the end user to choose the right fra ction based on what the cardamom oil is used for.
ABSTRACT Introduction: Drug-disease interactions include the impact of a drug and a particular disease condition on each other. However, the current practice in addressing drug-disease interaction is unbalanced and mostly limited to how the drug worsens the disease or health condition. Areas covered: Aspirin and gastric ulcer interaction are used as an example to illustrate this concept, especially the narration of how disease affects drug efficacy. The number of molecules that make up 100 mg of aspirin is identified with a view to discuss the pharmacokinetics, especially in terms of absorption and distribution. Using hypothetical scenarios, the pharmacodynamics in co-morbidities that could involve gastric ulcer and aspirin are also discussed. Expert opinion: There seems to be oversight in definition and description of drug-disease interaction, which is often limited to ‘how drug exacerbates disease’. The implication of this limited definition is that the discussions, research and teaching of the topic either lacks information, or are not clear on ‘how disease affects drug efficacy’. For example, gastric ulcer has the potential to enhance absorption, bioavailability and therapeutic effects of aspirin, but this is rarely discussed in preference to the probability of gastro-intestinal bleeding side-effect.
Childhood trauma exposure is a robust environmental risk factor for psychosis. However, not all exposed individuals develop psychotic symptoms later in life. The Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) Val66Met polymorphism (rs6265) has been suggested to moderate the psychosis-inducing effects of childhood trauma in clinical and nonclinical samples. Our study aimed to explore the interaction effect between childhood trauma and the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism on subclinical psychotic experiences (PEs). This was explored in two nonclinical independent samples: an undergraduate and technical-training school student sample (n = 808, sample 1) and a female twin sample (n = 621, sample 2). Results showed that childhood trauma was strongly associated with positive and negative PEs in nonclinical individuals. A BDNF Val66Met x childhood trauma effect on positive PEs was observed in both samples. These results were discordant in terms of risk allele: while in sample 1 Val allele carriers, especially males, were more vulnerable to the effects of childhood trauma regarding PEs, in sample 2 Met carriers presented higher PEs scores when exposed to childhood trauma, compared with Val carriers. Moreover, in sample 2, a significant interaction was also found in relation to negative PEs. Our study partially replicates previous findings and suggests that some individuals are more prone to develop PEs following childhood trauma because of a complex combination of multiple factors. Further studies including genetic, environmental and epigenetic factors may provide insights in this field.
Individuals with chronic respiratory disorder often have cardiovascular comorbidities and are more vulnerable to adverse effects from medication. Inhaler medications are effective in managing many respiratory diseases, but some have concern about its potential cardiovascular effect from long-term therapy and inappropriate use of these drugs. In the past few years, new members of inhaled long-acting beta-2 agonists and anticholinergics have become available. Based on the published data we reviewed, the adverse cardiovascular effects of these drugs are relatively low, and largely comparable to existing agents. However, most of the studies have very strict selection criteria for subjects, with limited study periods. Therefore, some level of concern remains with the clinical use of these agents, often in patients with substantial cardiovascular or other comorbidities, and are likely to use these drug for very long periods. Perhaps the monitoring of therapeutic efficacy and toxicity by laboratory methods needs to be further explored.
