To determine the knowledge base/nutrition advice being disseminated by physicians, a survey was developed and sent to 304 pediatricians, family practice physicians, and pediatric medical residents from a Medical Center's physician referral system. The survey covered topics pertaining to breast feeding, infant formulas, cow's milk, weaning , and iron supplementation. Items were written in accordance with recommendations provided by the Committee on Nutrition, American Academy of Pediatrics and were pilot tested on pediatric dietitians and physicians for validity and reliability. Surveys were scored as a percent of items correct. There was a 44% return rate(n=134) which included 73 pediatricians (55%), 35 family practice physicians (26%), and 26 residents(19%). Results showed the residents scored most favorably at 79.5% + 7.6, followed by pediatricians at 78.5% + 10.0, and family practice physicians at 64.3% + 14.1. There was a significant difference in scores between the pediatricians vs. family practice physicians (p<0.01) and residents vs. family practice physicians (p<0.01). The majority of pediatricians and family practice physicians reported they obtained their nutrition knowledge from the literature whereas, the majority of the residents reported they obtained this information from registered dietitians. Results suggest that there are discrepancies in the knowledge and practices of physicians with regard to infant nutrition. Continued attempts to educate physicians on nutrition should persist to ensure appropriate quality of care.
