We report for the first time in Ecuador the small plant genus Pyrolirion Herb. (Amaryllidaceae). We identify several Ecuadorian populations of Pyrolirion tubiflorum (L’Hér.) M. Roem. located in four provinces along the Ecuadorian Andes. This species has been previously recorded in Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. An updated description of P. tubiflorum is provided, along with detailed photographs of some of the Ecuadorian examples of the species.
The diversity of Vanilla Mill. in Andean South American countries remains significantly understudied, highlighting the urgent need for a robust taxonomic framework as a foundation for future biogeographic, monographic, phylogenetic, and ecological research. Drawing on extensive herbarium studies and fieldwork conducted by the authors over the past decade, we present a curated checklist of this economically important genus in South America, focused on the Andean countries of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Our review records 31 Vanilla species across the four countries, with Colombia emerging as the most species rich, followed by Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia. Among this diversity, we identified 25 species of potential interest as crop wild relatives of the globally cultivated V. planifolia Andrews. Moreover, we report several species not previously documented in our study area, including a new species from Ecuador, which we describe here as V. sekut Dami & aacute;n, Garz & oacute;n & Bentley. As part of our extensive herbarium and literature revision, we also designate six lectotypes, one neotype, and four epitypes. This checklist provides a critical baseline for future monographic and evolutionary studies on Vanilla in South America, offering valuable insights into its biodiversity and potential for agricultural and ecological applications.
Ecuador is an important center of biodiversity for the plant subfamily Amaryllidoideae, known for its important bioactive molecules. This study aimed to assess the chemical and biological potential of four different Amaryllidoideae species collected in Ecuador: Urceolina formosa, Urceolina ruthiana, Clinanthus incarnatus, and Stenomesson aurantiacum. Twenty-six alkaloids were identified in the bulb extracts of these species using GC-MS. The extract of S. aurantiacum exhibited the greatest structural diversity and contained the highest amounts of alkaloids, particularly lycorine and galanthamine. Only for this species, identification of all the alkaloids belonging to this chemical profile was not possible. Six of them remain unidentified. The potential of these three Amaryllidoideae genera against Alzheimer’s disease was then evaluated by measuring their AChE and BuChE inhibitory activity, revealing that C. incarnatus and U. formosa (from Sucumbíos province) showed the best results with IC50 values of 1.73 ± 0.25 and 30.56 ± 1.56 µg·mL−1, respectively. Molecular dynamic assays were conducted to characterize the possible interactions that occurs among 2-hydroxyanhydrolycorine and the AChE enzyme, concluded that it is stabilized in the pocket in a similar way to galanthamine. This study expands our understanding of the biodiversity of Amaryllidoideae species from Ecuador, highlighting their potential as source of chemical compounds with pharmaceutical applications.
Over the past 20 years, Telipogon nigropurpureus had been known from only one specimen from the type locality near Arcabuco, Boyacá, in central Colombia. During botanical explorations in Colombia and Ecuador we have encountered more populations which are reported here. The new records found in Ecuador extend the known geographic range of T. nigropurpureus by 950 km south from the type locality. We provide an updated description, illustration, and photographs of the species, together with information on its ecology and distribution.
Recent field research on the eastern slopes of the Andes resulted in the discovery of a new species of Bomarea from the Cerro Candelaria Reserve in the Tungurahua province of Ecuador. Bomarea pastazensis is the second smallest species in the genus and differs from the smallest by the presence of glutinous trichomes on the ovary, glabrous sepals, and greenish-yellow petals with purple spots. Based on IUCN guidelines, a preliminary conservation status is assigned as Vulnerable (VU).

We here describe and illustrate Passiflora yolandae, a new species of Passiflora subgenus Passiflora, ser. Quadrangulares, from east-central Ecuador, and discuss its morphology, phenology, distribution, and relationships with other closely related species. This species is most notable for its unusual pendent inflorescence, with the flowers borne on relatively long and slender peduncles, with which it is readily different from its nearest related species. The flower buds, during the early stages of development, are nearly perfectly spherical. Literature studies have shown this plant to be found and collected during previous surveys; however, the sterile condition of those specimens never warranted it the recognition as a new species. We evaluate its conservation status as Endangered. An identification key to the species of Passiflora ser. Quadrangulares is provided.
We present the results of herpetological surveys in two adjacent mountains where the EcoMinga Foundation protects the cloud forest in the Upper Rio Pastaza watershed, in the Llanganates Sangay Ecological Corridor in Ecuador. A rapid assessment of the amphibian communities of the study sites reveals a diverse and heterogeneous composition, dominated by terrestrial frogs from the genus Pristimantis. We also identify a cryptic diversity with a significant number of candidate new species. We describe two new species of terrestrial frogs of the genus Pristimantis. Pristimantismaryanneae sp. nov. is characterised by not having tympanum externally visible and having 2-3 subconical tubercles in the upper eyelid; and Pristimantisburtoniorum sp. nov. is characterised by the presence of red colouration in hidden surfaces of the hind-limbs, tubercles on the upper eyelid, interorbital tubercle and a row of rounded tubercles along the snout to the tip and a pale red venter with dark brown mottled pattern. Our samples from the two Reserves do not share species between them, so the proportion of shared species seems to be relatively low. In addition, we highlight the importance of updating the knowledge of amphibians that are restricted to this important conservation region and comment about the threats and composition of the amphibian communities on the eastern slopes of the Upper Rio Pastaza watershed.
We have discovered a spectacular new species of frog in the genus Hyloscirtus, belonging to the H. larinopygion species group. The adult female is characterized by a mostly black body with large bright red spots on the dorsal and ventral surface, extremities, and toe pads. The adult male is unknown. Small juveniles are characterized by a yellow body with variable black markings on the flanks; while one larger juvenile displayed irregular orange or yellow marks on a black background color, with light orange or yellow toe pads. Additional distinctive external morphological features such as cloacal ornamentation are described, and some osteological details are imaged and analyzed. The performed phylogeny places the new species as the sister to a clade consisting of ten taxa, all of which are part of the H. larinopygion group. We use genetic distances to fit the new species into a published time-calibrated phylogeny of this group; our analysis based on the published chronology suggests that the divergence of the new species from its known congeners pre-dates the Quaternary period. The new species is currently only known only from Cerro Mayordomo, in Fundación EcoMinga´s Machay Reserve, at 2,900 m in the eastern Andes of Tungurahua province, Ecuador, near the southern edge of Los Llanganates National Park, but its real distribution may be larger.
