This study investigates the synthesis of calcium phosphates (CaP) from aqueous solutions of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and phosphoric acid (H3PO4) in the presence of lactic acid (C3H6O3). Emphasis is placed onpH-dependent phosphate speciation and ionic thermodynamic activity and their role in governing phase development during aqueous precipitation. A theoretical equilibrium analysis was performed to evaluate phosphate distribution and calcium availability as a function of pH, establishing a direct link between solution chemistry, supersaturation, and precipitation behavior. CaPs were synthesized under strongly alkaline conditions (pH approximate to 11-12) with reaction times ranging from 14 to 30 min. Continuous pH monitoring revealed distinct transitions associated with precursor dissolution and nucleation. Short reaction times yielded metastable phases, while sintering at 1000 degrees C promoted transformation toward thermodynamically stable crystalline structures. X-ray diffraction combined with Rietveld refinement demonstrated phase progression as a function of reaction time and thermal treatment, and crystallite size analysis confirmed structural reorganization during sintering. The results demonstrate that pH-driven speciation directly influences intermediate complex formation and final phase assemblage, providing a rapid and controlled route for the synthesis of calcium phosphate ceramics.

Abstract In this work, CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite thin films were deposited by the spray-coating method in ambient conditions using different deposition temperatures and annealing times. They were then exposed to high humidity in order to investigate the relation between processing parameters and degradation mechanisms. FTIR and XRD analyses identified two degradation mechanisms, one reversible, the formation of monohydrated perovskite, CH3NH3PbI3∙H2O, and another irreversible, the decomposition of perovskite into PbI2 and CH3NH3I. It was found that perovskite degradation is very sensitive to deposition parameters and that long annealing times at high temperatures increase compound stability, retarding reversible degradation even after a long exposure to ambient conditions. This is attributed to the formation of a small amount of PbI2 during deposition that acts as a protective layer against moisture, preventing the formation of monohydrated perovskite. Additionally, no signs of dihydrated perovskite were found in the films even after 50 days of exposure to high humidity.
Organic solar cells are very attractive for solar energy conversion due to their low cost, flexibility, lightness, and potential for manufacturing via roll-to-roll process. One of the materials most used as hole transport layer in these cells is the PEDOT: PSS polymer. However, this polymer easily degrades under environmental conditions, limiting the device lifetime. In this work MoO3 films were deposited by reactive radio frequency sputtering for being used as hole transport layer in organic solar cells. The effect of deposition parameters, such as working power and substrate temperature, was investigated. The x-ray diffraction data showed that the films deposited at 200 degrees C were amorphous or nanocrystalline, regardless the deposition power, except for those deposited at the lowest power, 125 W, which contained a small amount of the beta-MoO3 phase. The transmittance of these films, measured in a UV-VIS spectrophotometer, ranged from 60% to 75%. Unlike deposition power, the substrate temperature significantly affected the microstructural and optical properties of the films. The results showed that films deposited above 250 degrees C were crystalline and consisted of a mixture of beta-MoO3 and alpha-MoO3 phases, the percentage of the alpha-MoO3 phase increasing with temperature. The surface images of the films confirmed the important role of the substrate temperature on the crystallization of the films, showing the increase of crystallization with the temperature. The results of UV-Vis spectroscopy showed that the substrate temperature can be used as a parameter for bandgap tuning, with the values changing from 2.7 eV to 3.1 eV as temperature increases.
The spray technique for thin film deposition stands out for its versatility, simplicity and efficiency. In this work, two different spray techniques, conventional and ultrasonic, were used for the production of graphene oxide films, the first one was an industrial equipment for ultrasonic spray production and the second, an adaptation performed with an airbrush, a solenoid, a circuit electric and a program in C ++ language, called conventional spray. The films obtained were characterized with respect to thickness, electrical resistivity, transmittance and morphology. The samples produced by the conventional method presented thicknesses and transmittances more suitable for electronic applications, since the smaller sheet resistances were obtained by the ultrasonic spray method. The morphology of the films shows a better uniformity for the samples obtained by means of the ultrasonic spray technique. The comparative analysis of the results indicated that the conventional spray equipment, although much simpler and low cost, was able to achieve results as satisfactory as those obtained in an industrial ultrasonic spray equipment. The great advantage of the industrial equipment is the possibility of producing several samples simultaneously, while the conventional spray adapted has the benefit of speed, deposition possibility with larger graphene oxide sheets and accessibility of the production and operation of the system.
This work investigates the microstructural and morphological changes on CIGS thin films submitted to a post-deposition heat treatment. The CIGS 1000 nm-thick films were deposited at room temperature by RF magnetron sputtering onto glass substrates covered with molybdenum films. After deposition, the samples were submitted to a heat treatment, with temperatures ranging from 450 to 575 oC. The treatment was also carried out under a selenium atmosphere (selenization), from 400 to 500 oC. Morphological analyzes showed that the as-deposited film was uniform and amorphous. When the treatment was carried out without selenization, the crystallization occurred at or above 450 oC, and the grains remained nanosized. However, high temperatures led to the formation of discontinuities on the film surface and the formation of extra phases, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction data. The crystallization of the films treated under selenium atmosphere took place at lower temperatures. However, above 450 °C the film surface was discontinuous, with a lot of holes, whose amount increased with the temperature, showing that the selenization process was very aggressive. X-ray diffraction analyses showed that the extra phases were eliminated during selenization and the films had a preferential orientation along [112] direction. The results indicate that in the manufacturing process of solar cells, CIGS films deposited at room temperature should be submitted to a heat treatment carried out at 450 °C (without selenization) or 400 °C (with selenization).
Methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) perovskite has been proposed as a key component of thin film solar cells. In this work, the influence of substrate temperature on the properties of spray deposited CH3NH3PbI3 thin films was investigated. The main purpose of this work was to determine the best conditions to deposit and crystallize CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite thin films in a single step. An automatic spray system was used for depositing a solution of lead iodide and methylammonium iodide onto heated substrates under ambient conditions for just one second. After deposition the samples were held at the same temperature for 30 s. The substrate temperature varied from 60 °C to 140 °C. Substrate temperatures in the low range (60 °C–80 °C) led to films with needle-like or dendritic grains, extra phases, and poor coverage due to the low solvent evaporation rate, while depositions above 120 °C led to thermal decomposition of the film. The best results were obtained for substrate temperatures of 100 °C and 120 °C, which produced dense perovskite films with large equiaxed grains and good coverage. The transmittance spectra of these films showed the perovskite characteristic absorption edge at 780 nm. In addition, the Fourier-transform infrared spectra did not show any peaks associated with the solvent, confirming its evaporation and indicating that a 31 s overall processing time is enough to achieve a full perovskite crystallization.
VOx thin films (single and multilayers) were fabricated by RF magnetron sputtering for application in bolometers. The samples were deposited without vacuum break from three targets: V2O3; VO2 and V2O5. A RF magnetron sputtering system with three cathodes was built to carry out the depositions. The results showed that both configurations, single layers and multilayers, presented similar values of TCR, roughly 2%/K, and sheet resistance less than 20 k Omega/sq, being recommended for application in bolometers.
The bioactivity of calcium phosphate (CaP) coatings can be controlled by different CaP phase precipitation and/or addition of foreign ions to their crystal lattice. Cationic substitution of strontium (Sr) into CaP coatings has gained a great attention due to the unique potential of Sr ions on stimulating new bone formation while inhibiting bone resorption. In this study, a novel route was used for producing Sr-substituted calcium phosphate coating on metallic substrates, containing 5 mol%, 10 mol% and 15 mol% Sr concentration, by chemical deposition method. The obtained Sr-substituted calcium phosphate coatings were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses. The presence of strontium ions into calcium phosphate phase fostered monetite precipitation, instead of brushite, and this cationic substitution was investigated by Rietveld refinement method. FEG-SEM analysis showed the bioactivity behavior by the precipitation of characteristic bone-like apatite on the 5% Sr-monetite and HA coatings after 14 days of incubation, using McCoy culture medium. The biological performance of the coated surfaces showed that hDPSCs viability was enhanced in the presence of Sr2+ ion concentration up to 10 mol% (p < 0.05) when compared to the uncoated titanium substrates and hydroxyapatite coatings. The results suggested the 5% Sr-monetite as a potential alternative for hydroxyapatite coatings, because of the improved biological responses in this study.
This work describes the kinetics of conversion of brushite coatings, produced by chemical deposition, to hydroxyapatite. The conversion was performed in alkaline solution at three temperatures: 50°C, 55°C, and 60°C. The evolution of the transformation was assessed by X-ray diffraction, and the phase fractions were determined by Rietveld refinement. The Johnson–Mehl–Avrami equation was applied to the data in order to describe the conversion mechanisms. The value of 42kJ/mol obtained for the conversion activation energy is of the same order as found in similar surface-controlled dissolution processes. The Avrami exponent was n=3.5, which is consistent with an interface-controlled growth of three-dimensional HA crystals with decreasing nucleation rate.
