Background This pilot study examined the preliminary effectiveness of the PREVENT digital intervention that supports health care teams in delivering health behavior counseling on cancer survivors’ motivation to change behavior, their physical activity and food intake behaviors, and cardiovascular health (CVH). Methods Clinicians (physicians, nurse practitioners) at three urban cancer survivorship clinics were trained to use PREVENT. Patients were randomized to the PREVENT intervention or a wait-list routine care control group. Eligibility criteria for patients included: between ages 12–39, overweight or obese, were at least 6-months post-active cancer treatment, and had sufficient English proficiency. Results Fifty-five participants were enrolled; 27 were randomized to the PREVENT intervention and 28 to wait-list routine care control. The majority of the participants (82%) identified as non-Hispanic white, with an average age of 19.8 (SD ± 5.2) years. Patients that received the PREVENT intervention had greater increases in their self-efficacy, vigorous activity and number of food recommendations met than those who received routine clinical care. Changes in willingness, knowledge, and CVH outcomes were not significant. Conclusions The PREVENT digital intervention may provide improvements in preventive behaviors among AYA cancer survivors by supporting care teams with delivering evidence-based, tailored behavior change recommendations and resources to support patient health. Purpose Examine whether barriers to physical activity (PA) and PA level serve as serial mediators to the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and perceived quality of physical health. Design: Cross-sectional. Setting: A public university in Southeast United States. Subjects Seventy-five participants (18- 49 years). Measures: Self-report measures related to ACEs, barriers to PA, amount of PA, and perceived quality of physical health. Analysis Serial mediation analysis. Barriers to PA was a first-order mediator, and PA level was a second-order mediator between ACEs and perceived quality of physical health. Results Barriers to PA and PA levels serially mediated the relationship between ACEs and perceived quality of physical health (c = −1.01, SE = .251, P = .0002, 95% CI [−1.50, −.499]). The direct effect of ACEs on perceived quality of physical health was nonsignificant when mediators were controlled (c’ = −.383, SE = .252, P = .133, 95% CI [−.886, .120]). Higher ACE scores were associated with more barriers to PA, lower PA levels, and in turn, lower perceived quality of physical health. Conclusion The current study highlights specific pathways that contribute to the relationship between ACEs and perceived quality of physical health. Albeit limited by the sample size, preliminary data support prioritization of interventions that reduce barriers to PA when trying to increase PA in populations that are prone to early adversity.
Impact of the Run, Jump, Throw Program on Fundamental Motor Skills in School-Aged Children Kara BoynewiczPT, DPT, PCS, ATC, Brandi Eveland-Sayers, PhD, Andy R.Dotterweich, PhD, Loni Parrish, MA, Alyson Chroust PhD Abstract Fundamental motor skills and physical activity are essential in the health and well-being of children, building the structural framework for future health and wellness. The Run-Jump-Throw Program targets fundamental motor skills in school aged children. A six-week intervention using the Run-Jump-Throw program was implemented in children kindergarten through 5th grades to increase fundamental motor skills/physical activity. Students (n=135) participated in a 30-minute Run-Jump-Throw program once a week for six weeks. Portions of the BruininksOseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency Edition 2 (BOT-2) were used to assess baseline and post intervention outcomes. Statistically significant improvements were found for the object control (catching and throwing), standing long jump, and running speed and agility skills. Sexdifferences were found for standing long jump,and catching and throwing. Short term participation in structured programs, like the Run-Jump-Throw Program, can improve the fundamental motor skills in school-age-children. Full Text: PDF DOI: 10.15640/jpesm.v8n1a6
