IntroductionStudies regarding chronic pain have demonstrated that there is a high prevalence of this condition in 65 years of age and older population.Our study objectives was to assess the prevalence of chronic pain in a sample of older subjects without known or diagnosticated pathology, and without analgesic routine use. It was a preliminary step in assessing the effects of aerobic exercise on this condition (as part of a research project supported by The National Council of the Higher Education’s Scientific Research - CNCSIS).MethodsA complete anamnesis and routine laboratory was performed for each subject. Subjective tools (Faces Scale and the Visual Analog Scale) was used for assessment of pain, and two self-report measures of anxiety (Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Visual Analogue Scale) was used for assessment of anxiety.ResultsOf 136 subjects enrolled (Av. Age 64 ± 4) 39 subjects (28.67%) presented chronic pain. In bivariate analyses pain was associated with anxiety, negative life events, loneliness, sedentary life.DiscussionDespite the apparent health of the subjects involved in this study the prevalence of unexplained chronic pain complaints was high. It seems necessary to explore more this condition in general practice in older to highlight any specific cases, in order to reach diagnoses and to select the treatment or, considering the subjective nature of this entity and the associated features of aging in absence of any identifiable pathology, to select an appropriate intervention to improve the quality of life for this people.
ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to demonstrate the possible implication of physical education in the process of hemispheric lateralization in childhood, and behind this in the acquisition of the speech and hand writing language.MethodThe present study was taken on 116 pupils (av. = 6.4 yrs). Our goal was to emphasize if the ball games can play any role in the finalization of cerebral dominance. Using three tests of psychomotricity i.e. Tapping test, String test and Matorin test, we selected 18 ambidextrous pupils. Ten of them have a slightly greater performance of the right hand. These pupils were separated in two sample-groups:Sample I: 5 pupils involved in a regularly ball-games-programSample II: 5 pupils who did not practice this programResultsThis research has shown that children from sample I presented a greater performance and skill in achieving the speech and the hand writing language.ConclusionsIn a previous reported study we observed a comparable influence regarding performance and skill in achieving the speech and the hand writing language at pupils with borderline IQ. In this study the pupils performed a score between 89 and 120 at WPPSI III (Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence).We conclude that it may be taking in account the influence of these kinds of practice to influence the acquisition of the speech and hand writing language.
The polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) was defined by the presence of menstrual dysfunction, together with clinical and/or biochemical evidence of hyperandrogenism, and exclusion of other etiologies. Depression and poor quality of life (QoL) is a prominent characteristic of women who have polycystic ovary syndrome. Part of the depression stems from the emotional difficulty of being infertile, overweight, hirsutism, acne, hair loss or some other disturbing symptom. The polycystic ovary syndrome health-related QoL questionnaire (PCOSQ) of Cronin is the only specific measure for assessing health-related QoL in PCOS. It comprises 26 items and includes five domains: emotional, body hair, infertility, weight, and menstrual problems. This questionnaire is designed for women with PCOS. The Zung self-rating depression scale was used to assess depressive symptomatology. It contains 20 items: index scores below 50 reflect no depression, 50-59 reflect mild depression, 60-69 reflect marked to moderate depression and scores of 70 or greater reflect severe to extreme depression. 64 women with PCOS were recruited for this study. Results of Zung scale were compared with measurements in 44 women without PCOS. Women with PCOS had lower QoL on all factors of the QoL questionnaire. The prevalence of depression in women with PCOS was 35.93% (23 women, 18 women present mid depression and 5 women moderate or severe depression) and in women without PCOS was 9.09% (4 women wirh mild depression). PCOS is associated with depression and reduced QoL. Women with PCOS should be routinely screened and adequately treated for depression.
ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of disorders eating among patients with diabetes mellitus.MethodStudies have shown that The Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) can be an efficient screening instrument as part of a two-stage screening process in which those who score at or above a cut-off score of 20 are referred for a diagnostic interview. 44 patients with diabetes mellitus (28 women and 16 men) were recruited for this study. Height, current weight, body mass index (BMI) were determined. The EAT- 26 for Eating Disorders was completed. Results were compared with measurements in 32 nondiabetic subjects (22 women and 10 men).Results and conclusionsThe prevalence of disorders eating among patients with diabetes mellitus was 18.18%. Of the 44 patients with diabetes mellitus, 8 scored higher on EAT (average score 32.01, BMI 31.36 kg/m2) than the remaining 36 patients with diabetes mellitus, whose score averaged 14.22 (BMI 26.32 kg/m2). In this study we found significant differences for the recorded parameters between diabetic patients with and without disorders eating. Age were similar in both groups, but BMI were higher, and scored on EAT were higher in diabetic patients with disorders eating. The prevalence of disorders eating among nondiabetic subjects was 6.25%. Two patients with diabetes mellitus develop a clinical eating disorder and needs cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal psychotherapy and pharmacologic treatment. The EAT-26 score at or above of 20 needs expertise in eating disorders, and nutrition.
Aims:The purpose of this study was to distinguish electroencephalographic possible typical features at left handed children as against to right children, and also to find out possible range aspects which can suggests the central dominance for language.Method:Electroencephalographic (EEG) band was recorded on an EEG device (Pegasus Digital EEG-EMS GmbH - Austria) according to the international standards.Subjects:Sample I: 8 left handed children (av. 9.38 SD 3.53 yrs); Sample II: 18 right handed children (av. 11.06 SD 2.48 yrs).Using the data obtained by Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), we performed comparisons regarding the index, and the average frequency for delta, theta, alpha, and beta bands. The comparisons was performed for each subject, for each band, and pair of electrode between left and right hemisphere, between left and right children for every electrode, and for the two hemispheres.Results:We have found significant differences on EEG features between left and right children regarding both index, and frequency of the main cerebral rhythm, the most meaningful been at alpha, and beta rhythms. For instance the beta frequency was higher on the left recordings, mostly at right children, where seven of the electrode pairs presents significant differences.Conclusions:In contrast with classical, and virtual analysis the Digital EEG, and FFT test is a method that can be useful to study the cerebral dominance. The advantage of this method pleads the fact that firstly it is a noninvasive method, and despite other sophisticated functional techniques remains the most inexpensive.
UNLABELLED:In the present work we decided to find out more about nutritional behaviour at persons between 55-70 years from the four activity domains, representative for the professional background of the Dolj county (agriculture, education, industry and health), using the following hypothesis of work: the grade of medical culture specific for some groups of population induces decisive changes in the nutritional behaviour and, after that, in the health state and professional performance.MATERIAL AND METHOD:129 subjects were included in the research, with the age between 55 and 70 years, selected from the recalled activity sectors. With the aim of knowing the nutritional behaviour, we have done a nutritional inquiry, each subject completed thee kinds of questionnairies.RESULTS:The farmers and the subjects from industry preferred to eat cheese, eggs, vegetable concentrated lipids and cereal products which were consumed in excess; on the oher hand, they ate few meat and meat products, fish, animal concentrated lipids, vegetables and fruits, sugar and sweets. The educators preferred more various food: meat products, cheese, eggs, vegetable concentrated lipids, cereal products, bread, dried vegetables, sugar and sweets, but they consumed few milk, meat, vegetables and fruit. The food preffered by the persons coming from health was: meat and meat products, cheese, eggs, vegetable concentrated lipids, cereal products, dried vegetables but some of them were eaten in excess. Any proteins were consumed in excess by the subjects coming from agriculture, education and health, and almost normally by the persons coming from industry. Sweets were deficiently used by the persons coming from agriculture and industry and in excess by those ones coming from education and health. Lower caloric values were observed in patients belonging to the second age group coming from health and education. Mineral and vitamins consumption was in deficit in all the subjects we studied.CONCLUSION:We could identify two kinds of nutritional behaviour: one common for the persons from agriculture and industry and the other very resembling for the persons from educational and medical sector.
Border between bone and marrow bone has many problems regards differentiation, cells topography, dynamic process of osteoclasto-genesis. So, this study tries to present morphophysiological aspects of this border, using lots of bone fragments that include compact and spongious bone. We observed genesis process of trabecular bone near the chondroclast zone and the osteoblast between sinusoid capillars. Also, the development of lamellar bone and the rapports between this structures, new marrow cells and angiogenesis process that exist near the lamellar trabecular bone surface. We observed the relation between immune system and bone, because it exist some factors that involve the development of cells precursors of lymphocyte B. Using a special staining method we observed the process of angiogenesis, hematopoetic system and reticuline fibers.
