This article describes the leading techniques for analyzing derivatives from pyrrole in oil and petroleum products. The main results obtained are described. The most effective method consists of a concentration of these compounds by liquid chromatography. The main individual components are identified by gas chromatography and its coupling with mass spectrometry. The principal compounds identified or characterized were carbazole and some of its alkylated derivatives, dibenzo(a)-, -(b)- and -(c)carbazoles and some of their alkylated derivates, and various dibenzocarbazoles. From the geochernical standpoint, it seems obvious that these compounds are not fossil molecules. Differences in behavior were also found for these compounds in relation to others with regard to catalytic hydrotreatment.
A flexible engine is one capable of running on fuels consisting of mixtures of conventional gasoline and a light alcohol (methanol or ethanol). If the concentration of each of these components of such mixtures varies, the tuning required for the proper running of the vehicle takes place automatically. This article begins by describing the characteristic properties of one of these light alcohols (methanol) as an automotive fuel. Then the equipment is described that makes an engine flexible, i. e. both the fuel recognition systems and the equipment capable of changing engine tuning (feed and ignition) as a function of the quality of the mixture burned.
Constant progress has been made in the leading applications of NMR. Recently, new techniques have extended applications of NMR and have provided more precise data on the samples analyzed. This is mainly the case of the high-resolution NMR analysis of solids where spectra with fine bands of solid samples can be obtained. It is also the case of high-pressure NMR analysis and two-dimensional NMR analysis. The use of such techniques is of great practical interest, for example in analyzing zeolites which are catalysts that are widely used in industry. They can also be used to analyze the behavior and structure of polymers in a solid state and of solid fossil fuels for the first of such new techniques, of homogeneous-catalysis mechanisms, and of the behavior of supercritical fluids for the second. They are used for relatively simply determining the chemical structure of large complex molecules for the third technique. This article also reviews the contribution of NMR to the analysis of molecular clusters.
This symposium enabled research scientists and engineers working with heavy oils and petroleum residues to compare their findings. Much attention was paid to asphaltenes, and it could be seen that real progress had been made with regard to the characterization of such fractions. The analysis techniques best able to provide information were described along with the specific ways of implementing them. Then the topic of how the analysis of heavy products was contributing to the development or optimization of methods for processing such oils was discussed.
The effect of the nature of the support material (gamma-alumina or alumina-based proprietary support) and of the metal loading on the catalytic properties of CoMo catalysts have been studied. For a conventional 3wt% CoO and 14wt% MoO3 catalyst, the use of the proprietary support has led to a 50% increase of the toluene hydrogenation activity. From Transmission Electronic Microscopy experiments, no major morphological differences between catalysts have been found suggesting an increase in the intrinsic catalytic activity rather than an increase in the number of sites. Measurements of the catalytic properties of a conventional industrial catalyst and the new high loading CoMo catalyst manufactured with the proprietary support have been carried out with natural feedstocks. The new high loading catalyst exhibits a gain in iso-conversion temperature of 8 degrees C. In addition, for the same hydrodesulfurization level, this new catalyst has not exhibited an increase of the hydrogen consumption.
Gas chromatographic simulated distillation gives the boiling range of petroleum products. It has been shown that with capillary columns (as with packed columns), the simulated distillation results of aromatic samples change with the polarity of the stationary phase. Three columns of different politary, sufficiently thermostable to elute samples having boiling points as high as 600°C were tested. It has been shown that the more suitable column for simulated distillation of vacuum distillates is one with medium polarity.
Two examples of automatic on-line chromatographic analysis with capillary columns and temperature programming are presented. The first is the detailed analysis of the effluent from a reforming unit. The sample is a C4C11 cut, mainly aromatic, which contains more than 200 compounds. It is shown that with automatic injection onto a capillary column, the resolution is as good as with manual syringe injection. Moreover, no discrimination between light and heavy compounds is observed. The second is the determination of ethylene, 1-butene (ca. 80%), traces of 2-butenes (less than 50 ppm), iso- and n-butane and C6 olefins. This analysis was effected on a chromatograph equipped with two non-polar capillary columns and two detectors with different sensitivity ranges. The sample is injected simultaneously onto the two columns. On one detector the traces are analysed but the peak of the main component is saturated; on the other detector, the main component is analysed. The reproducibility of the retention times was checked, in both examples, in a 1-month test with automatic on-line injection.
An on-line analyser for reforming process effluents was developed from a commercial chromatograph and a computer. A temperature-programmed capillary column is used with software to make a detailed analysis (by automatic identification on the chromatogram) and to determine different physical properties (specific gravity, molecular weight, research and motor octane numbers, etc.).
An on-line automatic explosion-proof process octane-number analyser was developed. The principle is based on on-line capillary gas chromatographic analysis of the sample. A computer program performs the identification and the quantification of the components and calculates the octane numbers and other physical properties. The process analyser consists of laboratory equipment placed in an explosion-proof shelter. A prototype of the analyser was tested on a pilot plant under industrial conditions. It was shown that the fully automated analyser is reliable and reproducible.

Self-reinforcing liquid-crystal polymers are materials in which the molecules, i. e. organic polymers, are capable of orienting themselves in relation to one another. This property gives them mechanical characteristics close to those of steels yet of much less weight without having to use reinforcing fibers. There are two types of self-reinforcing liquid-crystal polymers: (i) those capable of orienting themselves in solution, called Iyotropic, and (ii) those capable of orienting themselves in a molten state, called thermotropic. Poly (p-phenylene terephthalamide) fibers, self-reinforcing liquid-crystal polymers of the Iyotropic type, are commercially available and have already found numerous applications. Thermotropic self-reinforcing liquid-crystal polymers are not yet on the market but seem to be very promising because they are capable of being molded and hence of taking on a wide variety of shapes, which is not the case of those of the lyotropic type.
