A rapid method for simultaneous separation of uranium and plutonium based on a batch liquid-liquid extraction system is described in order to show that the elements may be determined simultaneously by multiple-filament mass- spectrometry in which the ions measured are singly charged metal ions. The method provides a separated uranium-plutonium fraction free of cladding components, mission products, and americium and curium. Since the uranium-to- plutonium ratio is chemically controlled, both elements are determined with a single loading of the filament. With uranium-233 and plutonium-242 as added isotopes a series of simulated typical fuel-dissolver solutions were analyzed for uran m and plutonium concentration and isotopic distribution with precisions of better than l% relative standard deviation.
