Reaction of N,N'-diphenylthiourea with cis-[PtCl2L2] [L = PPh3, PMePh2, PMe2Ph, PEt2Ph, PPh2(NEt2) or L2 = Ph2PCH2CH2PPh2 (dppe) in the presence of silver(I) oxide gives the thiadiazatrimethylenemethane complexes [activated Pt{SC(=NPh)NPh}L2] an X-ray study on [activated Pt{SC(= NPh)NPh}(PPh3)2] establishing the presence of a flat activated Pt-S-C-N ring. Related activated Pt-S-P-N ring complexes which contain a reactive nucleophilic P = NPh group are formed upon treatment of PhNHP(S) (Ph)NHPh with cis-[PtCl2L2] [L = PPh3, L2 = dppe, Ph2P(CH2)3PPh2 or Ph2P(CH2)4PPh2] and potassium hydroxide. Treatment of [activated Pt{SP(= NPh)(Ph)NPh}L2] with Mel afforded an aminophosphonium salt, whilst with substrates containing either C = O or C = S functionalities new complexes of the type [activated [Pt{SPO(O)(Ph)NPh}L2] or [Pt{SP(S)(Ph)S}L2] were formed respectively.
Treatment of the complexes cis-[PtCl2L2] (L = donor ligand) with either N,N'-diphenylsulfamide or N,N',P-triphenylphosphonic diamide in the presence of an excess of silver(I) oxide in refluxing dichloromethane yielded the new metallacycles [activated Pt{NPhS(O)2NPh}L2] and [activated Pt{NPhP(O)(Ph)NPh}L2] respectively. The X-ray crystal structure of [activated Pt{NPhS(O)2NPh}(cod)] (cod = cycloocta-1,5-diene) showed the presence of an entirely flat four-membered ring, whereas that of [activated Pt{NPhP(O)(Ph)NPh}-(PPh3)2] exhibits a small puckering angle, but with no substantial Pt...P transannular interaction. tert-Butyl isocyanide displaces a phosphine ligand from [activated Pt{NPhS(O)2NPh}(PPh3)2].

Reaction of PhCOCH2P(O)(Ph)CH2COPh, RNHP(O)(Ph)NHR or RNHS(O)2NHR (R = H or Ph) with cis-[PtCl2L2](L = PPh3 or PMePh2; L2= Ph2PCH2CH2PPh2 or cycloocta-1,5-diene) in the presence of silver(I) oxide gives metallacyclic complexes of the type [[graphic omitted]H(COPh)}L2], [[graphic omitted]R} L2] or [[graphic omitted]R}L2] respectively; single crystal X-ray studies on [[graphic omitted]H(COPh)}(PPh3)2] and the insertion product [[graphic omitted]H}(PMePh2)2] establish the presence of puckered metallacycles, the oxygen of the platinaphosphetane-3-oxide adopting an equatorial environment.
