CELSIUS is a cooler storage ring under construction in Uppsala. It will be used for nuclear and particle physics with ions (up to A ≈ 100) with energies up to 470 MeV/nucleon as well as protons with energies up to 1360 MeV. An electron cooler with electron energies up to 300 keV and current of 2.8 A will be used to cool the stored particles. An experimental station including a cluster gas-jet target, a fiber target, and a common scattering chamber is being built. A hydrogen pellet target has been proposed by the WASA collaboration. Experiments have been proposed for a number of studies in light and heavy ion nuclear physics and in elementary particle physics.
The regeneration of biologically clogged water wells by radiation proved to be a successful and economically beneficial process among other promising applications of ionizing radiation in the water supply technology. The application conditions and experience are mentioned.
In gaseous CCl4 at 20 to 30 °C, the probability that a binary collision effects an energy transfer between the translational and the vibrational degrees of freedom is 3.8 · 10−3, in liquid CC14 at the same temperature it is close to 2.6 · 10−3. The ratio of these experimental values corresponds exactly to that predicted from the theoretical relationship:Pliquid/Pgas = (1 +Sη/T) · exp(−ɛ/kT).
The vibrational relaxation time in liquid carbontetrachloride (at 25 °C) has been investigated by Brillouin scattering for pressures ranging up to 1250 bars. From the relation between the liquid density (as a function of pressure) and the relaxation time the diameter of the CCl4-molecule has been calculated. It was found to be 5.31 ± 0.05 Å.
The changes in the viscosity of He, Ar, N2, and CO2 resulting from the addition of a defined fraction of water vapour have been investigated at 30°C and at atmospheric pressure. For all gases a decrease in the velocity was found, with the exception of He, which showed a maximum increase of 0.2% at 1 vol. % of water vapour. The experimental results have been compared with those calculated on the basis of a first order approximation to the viscosity of a binary polar-nonpolar gas mixture.
A permanent magnet with columnar crystal material (columax) and a pole gap of 35 mm is described. The magnetic field induction of 12677 T has been achieved. The parallelism of the pole faces can be adjusted by means of three wedge adjustment devices which move one pole cap. Some details of the magnet pole pieces, the construction of the pole caps, the magnetization and testing of the magnet are given. The magnetic field homogeneity over a sample volume of 005 cm3 is 1 part in 107.
Mittels Beugungsgittern wurde die chromatische Aberration des Auges bestimmt. Unter Zugrundelegung eines reduzierten Auges mit einer Länge von 22,8 mm ergab sich eine Dispersionskurve, die etwas steiler ist, als die mit den bisher üblichen Methoden gemessenen. Daneben wurde mit der angewandten Methode eine mögliche Unstetigkeit beim Übergang von fovealen zum extrafovealen Sehbereich gefunden.
DURING December 22, 1961–January 8, 1962, the occurring aerosol at Vienna was sampled for 403.5 hr. continuously on filter paper F (Schleicher und Schüll chromatographierpapier 2043 Mg1) by a Goetz aerosol spectrometer AS1 at the site of the First Physics Institute of the University (window on the second floor). The spectrometer effects the quantitative separation and size selective deposition of the airborne particulate matter. The deposit pattern yields the size distribution. The operating conditions of the spectrometer for this run were 10,000 r.p.m. and 40 mil limiting orifices, that is, the spectrometer did sample all the airborne particles with Stokes's diameters δ between 0.3µ and 5µ at a rate of 3.0 l./min. (total volume of the sample 72.6 m.3).
