By means of a grid of point like electrodes the homogeneity of ZnO varistors is investigated. The local distribution of voltage drops on a varistor disk at a fixed local current can be described by a normal distribution, whereas the local distribution of current densities at constant voltage along the whole varistor disk (usual operating case) is given by a log-normal distribution. Deviations from these distributions are caused by strong inhomogeneities. Degradation of ZnO varistors by electric load leads to initially increasing inhomogeneity of the local current and voltage distributions. Proportionality between degradation rate and passed charge rate is also valid in microscopic ranges in the case of small charge rates. For higher current densities and longer loading time saturation phenomena are observed.
The coexistence of two phases at metal—insulator transition leads to peculiarities of the physical properties. This work reports on such peculiarities of the behaviour of the thermoelectric power and resistivity of vanadium oxides. An immediate proof for the coexistence of two phases is given by the behaviour of the X-ray reflexes.
Results of experiments concerning the shift of the transition temperature of the high- and low-temperature phase transition in (V0.99Cr0.01)2O3 due to substituting 16O by 18O are presented. Whereas for the low-temperature phase transition there is an increase of transition temperature, a decrease is observed for the high-temperature phase transition. In accordance to previous considerations this can be explained by considering dynamic effects of electron-phonon interaction in the metallic phase. The expected ratio of the shifts of transition temperature agrees nearly quantitatively with experiment.
Previous investigations of the influence of substituting 16O by 18O on the temperature of the metal–insulator transition in transition-metal oxides have been extended to V6O13, V4O7, and Fe3O4. By means of a new preparation method, which is briefly described, samples with increased content of 18O have been obtained. In all cases an increase of the transition temperature has been observed. This result is discussed with reference to recent theoretical work on the problem.
AbstractThe spin‐disorder resistivity of amorphous ferromagnets is investigated in the temperature regimes 0 ≦ T ≫ TC and T ≫ TC. The resistivity is calculated within the force–force correlation function method up to the second order in the sd‐exchange constant. A simple structural model for a structurally disordered Heisenberg ferromagnet is presented. At lowest temperatures the spin‐disorder resistivity varies as T3/2 for a sufficient high degree of disorder. It is concluded that the experimentally observed T2‐dependence at these temperatures is of non magnetic origin. This dependence can be qualitatively understood if the thermal smearing of the structure factor is taken into account.
In the vanadium oxides V2O3, V3O5, and VO2 oxygen is partially replaced by the stable isotope O18. The concentration of O18 in the oxides is determined by IR spectroscopy. The resulting increase of the temperature Tc of the semiconductor—metal transition, found by the measurement of the electrical resistance, is discussed on the basis of different models of phase transition. The results can be qualitatively explained by a concept, where the transition is caused by electron—electron interaction, which is strongly modified by electron—phonon coupling.
