At approximately the same time, two lines of research have studied disfluencies from different orientations—one in stuttering and the other in normal speech. In certain important respects the findings of these separate lines differ. Resolution of these differences, which is particularly important for understanding stuttering in its relation to disfluency and fluency, has been precluded because the two research areas have remained essentially isolated from each other.
This is the first of two articles concerned with the interpretation and relevance of stuttering adaptation and consistency data. This first article presents a critical analysis of the adaptation and consistency effects, and related concepts, pointing up several serious problems inherent in the traditional explanation of their significance. Data from a representative study are used to exemplify these problems and to support an integral explanation of the two effects. It is concluded that traditional accounts of these phenomena are misleading and that analysis of adaptation-consistency data from a different perspective will contribute realistically to understanding stuttering.
