Szczególne miejsce zajmują w niej przygody Kajka i Kokosza – bohaterów, którzy wpisali się w kanon polskiej popkultury, łącząc humor, konwencję przygodową i inspiracje folklorem słowiańskim. Autorzy tomu pokazują, w jaki sposób komiksy Christy czerpały z tradycji literackiej, historii, kultury ludowej i konwencji gatunkowych, a jednocześnie współtworzyły wyobraźnię kulturową powojennej Polski.
The article presents the material from the field research I conducted in Nasielsk and its surrounding villages. From a reasonably rich collection of interviews, I have selected fragments that refer to the verbal folklore preserved in the memory of the inhabitants of Nasielsk. To more accurately extract and present oral legend, the article is divided into two parts. First, I deal with topics related to folk demonology and belief in the operation of ‘unclean forces’ among the inhabitants of the local community. On the other hand, the second part is devoted to narratives related to magic and ways to counteract it.
The article aims to analyze the theme of sleep and dreaming in comic books about the adventures of Tytus, Romek, and A'Tomek by Henryk J. Chmielewski (1923-2021). The choice of the topic results not only from the popularity of this motif in his works, but also from the multifaceted nature and multitude of cul-tural references. The article is divided into two parts, in which we will analyze the motives and types of dreams appearing in Chmielewski's comics and how he understood them. An essential part of the text will explain the four functions of dreams used by Chmielewski. First, sleep is limited to sleep and is only a phy-siological process. Secondly, the dream is the motive behind the construction and development of the adventures of the three heroes. Third, sleep is related to the practicalities of everyday life. Fourth, Chmielewski used dreams to ex-plain the psychological structure of the characters and predict the future.
Celem artykułu jest analiza motywu snu i śnienia w komiksach o przygodach Tytusa, Romka i A’Tomka autorstwa Henryka J. Chmielewskiego (1923–2021).
The article aims to analyze two concepts that are extremely important in the media, i.e. “fact” and “interpretation” and their relationship with “truth.” Addressing this issue results primarily from the frequent use of the colloquial understanding of these concepts and building, based on them, fragile theories regarding the correct message in the media. To organize the argument, the article is divided into two parts, which are devoted to – based on logical and philosophical research and methodology derived from historical sciences – the analysis of the concept of “fact,” and then “interpretation.” In addition, these considerations are supplemented with an attempt to show how we can relate to facts and carry out an interpretation to obtain the most adequate reality and communicable message.
This article aims to show how time, or more precisely its two dimensions: past and future, functions in political discourse. The example to be analyzed will be the early Meiji period (1868–1912) in Japan when important political and systemic changes occurred. The starting point shows the ideological significance of time, which had a function in Japanese politics of the Meiji era to legitimize the transformation. To structure the argument, the article is divided into two parts, in which we will show in turn how this process took place. The examples discussed will be the concept of ishin, which, on an ideological level, was to justify the change’s essence, and the content of the Meiji Constitution, where references to time had a crucial legitimizing function.
The present paper is an introduction to the debate on the contemporary methodology of research on myths. I attempt herein to elucidate the essence of myth, with the attempt being carried out in two parts. In the first part, I overview a history of the philosophical debate on the subject as well as I specify the reasons why myth ought to be reunited with truth anew, as was the case with Greek philosophers. In the latter part, I deal with the analysis of myth in relation with a human being – both in the individualist senseand in the social one, with the latter sense performing a significant role in understanding the world as well as humanity at large. Furthermore, I suggest what the essence of myth might be and what validity it can have for the contemporary man. The reflection included in the present text is inspired by some pertinent philosophical conceptions that allow me to show that it is possible to say something new about myth and the research thereupon.
The Idea of kokutai and nihonjinron and National Identity in JapanThis paper is an attempt at a political and cultural interpretation of national identity in pre- and postwar Japan. For clarity of analysis the essay is divided into two parts. The first one deals with the category of kokutai, which can be translated as national character or national polity. The kokutai was the most important idea in prewar Japan and one which was exploited for creating a political sense of Japanese nationality. The concept of ethnic nationalism (minzokushugi) as well as the document Kokutai-no hongi [Cardinal Principles of the kokutai], published in 1937, were the most expressive examples of the political sense of national identity. The second part discusses the concept of nihonjinron (theories about the Japanese), which is connected with the cultural background of nationalism in contemporary Japan. The significance of this idea can be seen in a continuity of ethnic sense of national identity earlier expressed by kokutai (but without support of governments). In the other sense the nihonjinron is understood as a rank-and-file initiative of the contemporary Japanese society. It can be seen in the activity of Japanese writers, philosophers and artists who thus create a unique vision of Japan.
The main purpose of this paper is to describe Polish folktales about inanimate nature and atmospheric phenomena. There are three reasons for the selection of this topic. Firstly, motifs of nature are not popular in Polish folktales despite the fact that nature itself plays an important role in the life of villagers. Secondly, the themes included in these folktales refer not only to Christianity, but also to local beliefs as well as to Slavic myths. And thirdly, Polish folktales perpetuate the separation of man from nature, with the latter being evil and dangerous.
Pierwsza z nich to wprowadzenie do, nieobecnego w polskiej literaturze, wątku japońskiej kartografii i związanych z nią treści ideologicznych, druga zaś zawiera analizę konkretnych przykładów idei narodowych zawartych w komiksie Nihon no rekishi nenpyō jiten.
The aim of the paper is threefold. Firstly, urban motives are closely related to problem of identification with town (street or district). Secondly, this kind of identification is very often connected with sport (in this cases with football and speedway). Thirdly, in rock band text, sometimes, urban motives are related toexistential concepts and reflections.
Myth and mythologization in ideology and politcs. The mythologization of Japanese identity in the Meiji period Is myth a word or a thought? Searching for the etymological roots proves to show that it is both. However, does it really exhaust all the possible understandings of the myth and does it enable the grasp of its multiple usages? Answering those questions seems very important not only because we do not have the precise definition of a myth but mainly for that reason that we often fail to notice that it functions in all the societies and political regimes playing quite a vital role at the same time. The purpose of this paper is not only sketching the possible answers but also their exemplification through the example of Japan in the period of Meiji. The choice of that example results from that fact it is a conspicuous example of the way in which political elites are engaged in creating symbols and rituals and in shaping national awareness. The examples of the process of shaping national identity presented in this paper are focused on demonstrating two fundamental myths related to the Emperor, the aim of which was to consolidate the national identity. Mitologizacja japońskiej narodowości. Mit a mitologizowanie narodu.
Gallus Anonymus’ gesta principium polonorum in the context of the formation of Polish national consciousnessThis paper is an attempt at a reconstruction of sources of Polish national consciousness, with its political and cultural components. It should be emphasized that cultural determinants are most important for consolidating national identity. In the Polish case, one of the most interesting and also most often reproduced Polish cultural motifs is the legend of Piast and Popiel. For reasons outlined above, this article will attempt to analyze legends of the first ruler in Poland and references to them in the contemporary Polish culture. For clarity of analysis, the essay is divided into two parts. The first is connected with the myth of richness and the fertile, as well as powerful Poland. The significance of this part is for the processes of creating Polish national identity around utopian visions, and also their presence in the literature. Furthermore, this myth is related with belief that the ruler must be just for his people. The second part includes the analysis of the presence of this myth in popular culture, on the example of children’s literature and in the social space.
