We investigated the impact of the inhalation of a blended essential oil aroma on markers of chronic stress in otherwise healthy adults. The "Stressless™" essential oil blend employed is a proprietary product designed and created by the International Federation of Aromatherapists as a treatment for stress. Seventy-five adults took part in the balanced placebo-controlled design study. Fifty participants with self-reported stress were randomly allocated to undergo two-weeks of an aroma inhalation protocol balanced with two-weeks of perceptible placebo inhalation. A no intervention control group provided data on the variables across the same study period. The dependent variables were the cortisol awakening response (CAR) and subjective measures of stress and associated symptoms assessed at four time points. Data analysis revealed that in stressed individuals exhibiting a suppressed CAR at basal levels, "Stressless™" aromatherapy normalized this physiological parameter to control group levels. However, this modulatory effect was found to be limited to the intervention period and did not show persistence after application. In contrast, the continued improvement in the subjective stress and anxiety scores after the intervention suggested that the effect of aroma on psychological well-being is more resistant. In conclusion, the "Stressless™" essential oil blend may be considered an effective non-invasive tool for stress management in otherwise healthy individuals. These observed effects are discussed within the framework of the regulatory mechanisms of olfaction on the limbic system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.
Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) has been linked to improvements in psychological wellbeing through cholinergic mechanisms. However, this study investigated whether individual differences in eye blink rate (EBR) and blink variability (EBV), which are proxies of dopaminergic activity and attentional control, influence the cognitive and mood-enhancing properties of a rosemary-containing drink. Forty-eight healthy adults completed a three-stimulus odd-ball cognitive task under rosemary or control conditions, while vertical electrooculograms were recorded. Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were also measured using the P3a component at the Cz scalp electrode as an additional index of dopaminergic activity. Subjective mood and arousal (alert, contented, calm) were collected pre- and post-task using Bond–Lader visual analogue scales. Reaction times during the task were modelled with ex-Gaussian parameters (μ, σ, τ). Rosemary ingestion led to increased alertness and contentedness following the task. Cognitive effects were moderated by blink metrics, with significant interactions between rosemary and blink metrics for mean reaction time μ and response variability σ. Rosemary also increased P3a amplitudes, indicative of dopaminergic contribution. The effects of rosemary on cognition and mood were moderated by individual blink profiles, indicating that baseline neurocognitive state plays a role. Although cholinergic accounts are well established, this study highlights the use of proxies of dopamine to investigate broader neurotransmitter involvement in rosemary’s enhancing properties.
This double-blind positive-controlled study investigated the potential for the aroma of a novel blend of essential oils, Genius to enhance cognitive performance and mood in healthy adults, and whether any such benefits might be related to changes in cerebrovascular oxygenation measured using Near Infra-Red Spectroscopy. Ninety participants (61 female) were pseudo-randomly allocated to achieve a gender balance across three experimental groups: Genius aroma, Sage aroma (positive control) or no aroma (control). All participants completed mood questionnaires after completing a range of cognitive tasks whilst wearing a Near Infra-Red Spectroscopy headband. Multivariate and subsequent univariate data analysis revealed significant enhancements to memory and executive function tasks in the Genius and sage aroma conditions compared to no aroma with larger effects noted for the Genius blend. Furthermore, the novel blend outperformed the aroma of pure sage and also left participants feeling significantly more alert and less fatigued at the end of the testing session. Near Infra-Red Spectroscopy data indicated that both sage and Genius blend enhanced metabolism during task performance with a greater impact from the Genius aroma. Although suggestive of a mechanism underpinning the enhancements observed no correlations were found between the Near Infra-Red Spectroscopy signals and cognitive performance. This study strengthens the evidence base for the beneficial effects of essential oil aroma inhalation for cognitive performance, however the underlying mechanisms remain elusive.
BackgroundClinical trials in neurological and psychiatric indications are hampered by poor measurement fidelity in currently used “standardized” rating scales. Digital, repeatable tests that can be remotely administered offer a more fine-grained understanding of the patient’s clinical trajectory. Several such tools are being developed, but only a few have been validated in terms of their ability to discern and describe change over time—a critical element of clinical trials. ObjectiveFour cognitive tasks from a digital battery (delivered via tablet) are administered at high frequency following an alcohol challenge to assess sensitivity to change. The tasks are novel, repeatable, and self-administered implementations of classic neurobehavioral paradigms. MethodsThirty healthy younger adults were assessed on 2 separate days, once under the influence of alcohol and once under a placebo, with order counterbalanced. Each day included 8 assessments. The tasks comprised novel, engaging implementations of the Digit Symbol Substitution Task (DSST), reaction time, N-back working memory, and visual associative/episodic memory, and were compared with benchmark measures. In-laboratory assessments were preceded by massed practice (3 sessions), and blood alcohol concentration was monitored throughout using a breathalyzer and a Visual Analog Scale. ResultsAlcohol-related impairment was observed across multiple measures, followed by a return to baseline as blood alcohol concentration declined. A slight practice effect was noted between the first and second sessions for the digital DSST, along with a longer-term effect across the 2 days. Moderate to strong correlations between digital and benchmark measures were observed at peak intoxication. ConclusionsUnder alcohol challenge, this battery, along with benchmark standardized tests, demonstrates sensitivity to subtle changes in cognitive performance over time. Practice effects are minimal within this condensed protocol. Patient-friendly, repeatable tests administered via a digital platform, such as those in the current battery, warrant further investigation in the context of remote clinical studies that require methodological approaches capable of discerning and describing small changes over time. The availability of validated single tests or test batteries as sensitive tools that can be easily and frequently administered (eg, daily) would address a critical gap: the lack of descriptors with sufficient sensitivity, specificity, and reliability to detect cognitive changes over time in clinical trials of new therapies for neurological and psychiatric conditions.
Background During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people sought information from websites and social media. Understanding the extent to which these sources were trusted is important in relation to health communication. Objective This study aims to identify the key factors influencing UK citizens’ trust and intention to act on advice about COVID-19 found via digital resources and to test whether an existing model of trust in eHealth provided a good fit for COVID-19–related information seeking online. We also wished to identify any differences between the evaluation of general information and information relating specifically to COVID-19 vaccines. Methods In total, 525 people completed an online survey in January 2022 encompassing a general web trust questionnaire, measures of information corroboration, coping perceptions, and intention to act. Data were analyzed using principal component analysis and structural equation modeling. The evaluation responses of general information and COVID-19 vaccine information were also compared. Results The principal component analysis revealed 5 trust factors: (1) credibility and impartiality, (2) familiarity, (3) privacy, (4) usability, and (5) personal experiences. In the final structural equation modeling model, trust had a significant direct effect on intention to act (β=.65; P<.001). Of the trust factors, credibility and impartiality had a significant positive direct effect on trust (β=.82; P<.001). People searching for vaccination information felt less at risk, less anxious, and more optimistic after reading the information. We noted that most people sought information from “official” sources. Finally, in the context of COVID-19, “credibility and impartiality” remain a key predictor of trust in eHealth resources, but in comparison with previous models of trust in online health information, checking and corroborating information did not form a significant part of trust evaluations. Conclusions In times of uncertainty, when faced with a global emergent health concern, people place their trust in familiar websites and rely on the perceived credibility and impartiality of those digital sources above other trust factors.
Stress and its consequences for health and wellbeing is an ongoing problem in the modern era. The potential for aromatherapy to offer a safe, effective and widely available treatment has been considered but the scientific evaluation has often fallen short. In this study we investigated the potential for the aroma of a blend of essential oils to impact on self-reported stress and cortisol levels as a biomarker of chronic stress. Sixty-six clients of clinical aromatherapists were recruited along with a control group of 33 healthy but stressed individuals. Aromatherapy clients followed an eight-week intervention programme that employed either a traditionally extracted or carbon dioxide extracted blend of essential oils. Control participants received no intervention. All participants completed self-report questionnaires at the start and end of the intervention period and provided two hair samples for the evaluation of cortisol levels in the preceding month. Data analysis revealed that the aromatherapy interventions produced significant reductions in self-reported stress, anxiety and mood disturbance with medium sized effects. Hair cortisol levels also significantly declined from pre- to post- treatment with a medium sized effect for both aromatherapy groups. No changes were seen in the control group for any variables. These findings clearly support the effectiveness of clinical aromatherapy practice for the treatment of chronic stress and suggests that method of extraction of the essential oils is not a critical factor. The potential for aromatherapy to contribute more widely to the democratisation of health care as self-care warrants further investigation.
The current study assessed the effectiveness of delivering safer gambling messaging to regular sport bettors on social media. It also assessed whether the content of the message impacted message effectiveness. A 3 × 2 mixed factorial design was employed, with 281 participants randomly assigned to follow one of three Twitter accounts. The accounts either sent out informational messages, self-appraisal messages or emotional self-efficacy messages. Participants reported betting behaviour from the two weeks prior to following the accounts, in addition to during the two-week intervention period, using information from their online gambling accounts. Participants reported readiness to change gambling behaviour pre and post the two-week intervention period. A significant main effect of intervention stage highlighted reductions in betting behaviour and increased readiness to change behaviour. However, there was no significant main effect of condition and no significant interaction between intervention stage and condition upon betting behaviour or readiness to change. The findings suggest receiving safer gambling messages on social media may lead to a reduction in betting behaviour. However, similar reductions in behaviour were observed in the experimental and control conditions. Further research is needed to clarify whether changes in behaviour observed in the current study would extend over a longer period of time.
Background: Decision-making is essential to human functioning, and resolving uncertainty is an essential part of decision-making. Impaired decision-making is present in many pathological conditions, and identifying markers of decision-making under uncertainty will provide a measure of clinical impact in future studies of therapeutic intervention for impaired decision-making. Objective: To describe EEG event-related potentials (ERPs) correlating with decision-making under uncertain conditions when compared with certain conditions. Method: We used a novel card-matching task based on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test to describe the neural correlates of uncertainty, as measured by EEG, in a group of 27 neurotypical individuals. We evaluated 500-ms intervals in the 2 seconds after card presentation to identify ERPs that are associated with maximal uncertainty compared with maximal certainty. Results: After correcting for multiple comparisons, we identified an ERP in the 500–1000-ms time frame (certain > uncertain, max amplitude 12.73 µV, latency 914 ms) in the left posterior inferior region of the scalp. We also found a P300-like ERP in the left frontal and parietal regions in the 0–500-ms time frame when the individuals received correct versus incorrect feedback (incorrect feedback > correct feedback, max amplitude 1.625 µV, latency 339 ms). Conclusion: We identified an ERP in the 500–1000-ms time frame (certain > uncertain) that may reflect the resolution of uncertainty, as well as a P300-like ERP when feedback is presented (incorrect feedback > correct feedback). These findings can be used in future studies to improve decision-making and resolve uncertainty on the described markers.
Age-related declines in cognitive abilities occur as early as middle-age in humans and rhesus monkeys. Specifically, performance by aged individuals on tasks of executive function (EF) and working memory (WM) is characterized by greater frequency of errors, shorter memory spans, increased frequency of perseverative responses, impaired use of feedback and reduced speed of processing. However, how aging precisely differentially impacts specific aspects of these cognitive functions and the distinct brain areas mediating cognition are not well understood. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is known to mediate EF and WM and is an area that shows a vulnerability to age-related alterations in neuronal morphology. In the current study, we show that performance on EF and WM tasks exhibited significant changes with age, and these impairments correlate with changes in biophysical properties of layer 3 (L3) pyramidal neurons in lateral LPFC (LPFC). Specifically, there was a significant age-related increase in excitability of L3 LPFC pyramidal neurons, consistent with previous studies. Further, this age-related hyperexcitability of LPFC neurons was significantly correlated with age-related decline on a task of WM, but not an EF task. The current study characterizes age-related performance on tasks of WM and EF and provides insight into the neural substrates that may underlie changes in both WM and EF with age.
Background Research suggests that the ingestion or aroma of rosemary enhances cognitive ability in both rodents and humans. However, how rosemary facilitates cognition and the precise therapeutic impacts on information processing remains unclear. Hypothesis/purpose This pilot study used the temporal precision of event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine the cognitive-enhancing benefits of a rosemary drink. Neural markers of sustained attention were used as indices to explore whether rosemary facilitates concentration in general or the allocation of resources to task-relevant information only. Study design and methods In a between-subject design (rosemary vs water control drink), 48 adults performed a 3-stimulus visual oddball task. Participants differentiated between rare target stimuli (index of task-relevant attentional processes; P3b ERP) embedded in a train of frequent stimuli. The presentation of an infrequent novel stimulus was also included (index of task-irrelevant stimulus processing; P3a ERP). Throughout the session, electroencephalograms (EEG) were collected and time-locked to the presentation of the target (P3b) and novel (P3a) stimulus types. Results The primary analyses revealed facilitation of the P3a in particular with a medium Cohen’s effect size reported. The investigation of the P3b component, although less reliable, also had a medium effect. The subsidiary consideration of the association between behaviour and the ERPs provided a further level of explanation regarding the therapeutic effect of rosemary on cognition. Indeed, the pattern of associations was suggestive of strategy differences during the performance of the task across the treatment group., although these data should be treated with caution. Conclusions These pilot data provide critical insights into the utility of rosemary to facilitate different aspects of attention. In particular, data are consistent with rosemary providing additional attentional resources to enhance the processing of stimuli we encounter, irrespective of task relevance. Indeed, the enhancement of both P3a and P3b components following rosemary administration may indicate that the herb enhances the processing of all stimuli in the environment. We argue for the use of both behavioural and EEG methods to explore the therapeutic effects of herbal compounds.
This study assessed bets advertised on Twitter by betting operators and affiliates, as well as their success. Bets advertised by 10 Twitter accounts were tracked over two weeks. Information recorded included: bet odds, bet type, number of times advertised, and bet success. The success of bets was calculated based upon placing equal stakes on each bet and running four sets of 10,000 simulations, each of an increasing number of randomly chosen bets with fixed bet stake per bet from those recorded. Both operators and affiliates advertised around 140 bets per day at average decimal odds of 6.0, however affiliates posted each bet three-times more than operators. Only one-in-five bets advertised won. Affiliate bets led to a 12% loss of original stakes, whilst operator bets led to a 20% loss. Only 30% of 10,000 simulations of 14 randomly chosen bets led to profit, decreasing to 19% when the number of bets included in the simulation increased to 140. Findings raise concerns about the volume of bets advertised on social media with large expected losses. Simulation data demonstrates how the chance of making a profit decreases the more advertised bets are bet upon. Future research should explore bettors' responses to such marketing.
Essential oils of pure lavender and lavender blends have been employed as potential anxiolytic aromas in aromatherapy, but a direct comparison of their effectiveness is lacking.The current study investigated the effects of aroma on induced anxiety in non-clinical adults, comparing pure lavender, a commercially available blend and a no aroma control.An experimental, quantitative, mixed factorial design with an opportunity sample of 60 participants was employed.Participants were randomly allocated to three equal groups, one tested in a room infused with lavender aroma, the second with the doTerra Peace ® blend, and the third free from any aroma.Participants' state anxiety scores were measured before and after a novel video-based anxiety induction procedure.Data analysis revealed that the anxiety induction was successful and that both aromas delivered small to medium-sized buffering effects compared to no aroma.The findings add to a small body of research in an area where the practice is global yet has limited scientific evaluation.Future studies utilising brain imaging and blood serum analysis to investigate the anxiolytic mechanism of aromas would be beneficial to further our understanding.
This study explored how frequent gamblers perceive gambling marketing and the role they feel it has in their gambling behaviour. Ten frequent gamblers participated in semi-structured interviews oriented around their experiences of gambling marketing. An interpretative phenomenological analysis of the data led to three overarching themes: exploiting gambling marketing for personal gain; gambling marketing as a test of self-control; and safer gambling messages marketing perceived as ineffective. These themes encapsulated participants' views of gambling marketing as something they could take advantage of to increase their own gambling success. Marketing was also perceived as a test of self-control among self-identified experienced gamblers, although identified as a risk to those who are considered more vulnerable. Finally, safer gambling messages included within marketing was considered ineffective due to perceived insincerity and being seen as an 'afterthought' by marketers. In support of previous research, the current investigation highlights concerning narratives around self-control and perceived risk, as encapsulated within gambling marketing, and these are evident in the perceptions of frequent gamblers. Given gamblers' perceived lack of effectiveness of current safer gambling messages within marketing, future research should explore new avenues for safer gambling promotion.
Aggressive driving is of increasing concern in modern society. This study investigated the potential for the presence of an ambient aroma to reduce aggressive responses in a simulated driving situation. Previous literature has demonstrated the beneficial effect of peppermint (Mentha piperita) aroma on driver alertness and we aimed to identify any impact on aggressive driver behaviour. Fifty volunteers were randomly assigned to one of two conditions (peppermint essential oil aroma and no aroma). Aggressive driving behaviours were measured in a virtual reality driving simulator. The analysis indicated that the peppermint aroma significantly reduced aggressive driving behaviours. The presence of the aroma also produced medium sized effects on some aspects of mood from pre‐test levels. These results provide support for the use of ambient aromas for the modification of driving behaviours. It is proposed that applying peppermint into daily driving may be a beneficial for reducing driver aggression.
Both the medial temporal lobe and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex have been implicated in learning and memory. However, it has been difficult to ascertain the degree to which the two structures are dependent on each other or interact in subserving these cognitive functions. To investigate this question directly, we prepared two group of monkeys. First, the contralateral frontal-hippocampal split group (CFHS) received a unilateral lesion of the hippocampus and surrounding posterior parahippocampal cortices (H +), combined with a contralateral lesion of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) plus transection of the corpus callosum and anterior commissure. This preparation functionally "disconnects" the remaining intact H + from the sole intact DLPFC in the opposite hemisphere. As a surgical control group, a second set of animals, the ipsilateral frontal-hippocampal split group, was prepared with a unilateral lesion of the DLPFC and an ipsilateral H + lesion together plus transection of the corpus callosum and anterior commissure. This preparation matches the locus and extent of damage in the cross-lesion group but allows the intact H + and intact DLPFC to interact ipsilaterally. Following recovery from surgery, all animals were then tested on the delayed nonmatching to sample task (DNMS), a test of recognition memory. The crossed-lesion split-brain group (CFHS) was markedly impaired on DNMS in both acquisition (rule learning) and performance over delays (recognition memory). The results provide evidence of a functionally dependent interaction between the medial temporal lobe and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in learning and memory. Employability is core to our understanding of career sustainability, and at an individual level, identifying the personal resources that support employability in the achievement of career success is warranted. This study builds on the conservation of resources theory, examining the role of employability as a mediator in the relationship between psychological capital and objective career success. To test our hypotheses, we utilised a context-specific practitioner sample of 135 individuals with UK-accredited occupational psychology qualifications. Employability was conceptualised using the competence-based model, underpinned by occupational expertise. Psychological capital and employability were measured using self-report questionnaires, whilst career success was determined via gross annual salary and practitioner status, ensuring objective measures of this outcome variable. Structural equation modelling identified that the relationship between psychological capital and objective career success was fully mediated by employability. These novel findings have important theoretical and practical implications for the role of psychological capital as a personal resource in achieving career success via its influence on employability.
Age-related impairments in cognitive function occur in multiple animal species including humans and nonhuman primates. Humans and rhesus monkeys exhibit a similar pattern of cognitive decline beginning in middle age, particularly within the domain of executive function. The prefrontal cortex is the brain region most closely associated with mediating executive function. Previous studies in rhesus monkeys have demonstrated that normal aging leads to an increase in myelin degradation in the prefrontal regions that correlates with cognitive decline. This myelin deterioration is thought to result, at least in part, from the age-related emergence of chronic low levels of inflammation. One therapeutic that may arrest the deleterious effects of neuroinflammation is curcumin (CUR), the primary component of the spice turmeric. CUR has been shown to be a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant and improves performance on tasks for working memory and motor function. In the present study, middle-aged monkeys (12-21 years old) were given daily dietary supplementation of 500 mg of curcumin or vehicle over a period of 3-4 years. Here, we present data from a series of both object and spatial reversal tasks. Compared to vehicle, the CUR group showed enhanced performance on object, but not spatial reversal learning. COVID-19 has brought not only fear and anxiety, but also legitimate restrictions of communication and consequential touch-deprivation in our daily lives. Couples' relational wellbeing continues to be impacted by these COVID-19 related stressors. Protecting both personal and relational wellbeing is therefore particularly important at this time. Using a preventative intervention approach, the current paper argues the theoretical benefit of the Positive Massage programme and reports a qualitative analysis of stressed but healthy couples' experience of engaging in the programme. Thirty-four participants completed 3 weekly classes and home-based practice of massage exchange. Data from an open text online questionnaire completed every week of the programme and again 3 weeks afterwards were analysed using thematic analysis. The identified themes included "holistic stress relief", "relationship-promotion", and "selves-care skill". Couples perceived Positive Massage as an effective mutual support skill to relax and help one another by de-stressing, both emotionally and physically through verbal and nonverbal communication, creating gratitude, deeper connection and self-efficacy via quality time together and pleasurable touch. Theoretically and experientially, Positive Massage can be an effective preventative selves-care skill. Promoting the concept of selves-care and its practical application through Positive Massage would be beneficial for couples' personal and relational wellbeing in a touch-deprived era.
Although speech and language biomarker (SLB) research studies have shown methodological and clinical promise, some common limitations of these studies include small sample sizes, limited longitudinal data, and a lack of a standardized survey protocol. Here, we introduce the Voiceome Protocol and the corresponding Voiceome Dataset as standards which can be utilized and adapted by other SLB researchers. The Voiceome Protocol includes 12 types of voice tasks, along with health and demographic questions that have been shown to affect speech. The longitudinal Voiceome Dataset consisted of the Voiceome Protocol survey taken on (up to) four occasions, each separated by roughly three weeks (22.80 +/- 20.91 days). Of 6,650 total participants, 1,382 completed at least two Voiceome surveys. The results of the Voiceome Dataset are largely consistent with results from standard clinical literature, suggesting that the Voiceome Study is a high-fidelity, normative dataset and scalable protocol that can be used to advance SLB research.
Abstract Background and aims The current study aimed to assess how sports bettors respond to advertised bets on social media and whether this differs dependent upon bet complexity and social media account type. Methods Employing a 3 × 2 repeated measures design, 145 regular football bettors were recruited to take part in an online study requiring them to rate bets advertised upon social media, providing indications of their likelihood to bet, confidence in the bet and how much they would stake on the bet. Advertised bets differed in terms of complexity (low, medium and high) and each bet was presented separately on both an operator account and an affiliate account. Results Data analysis highlighted a significant interaction between bet complexity and account type, with bettors rating themselves as being more likely to bet and more confident in bets which were presented on an affiliate account for medium complexity bets but not for low or high complexity bets. Discussion and conclusions This study provides initial evidence that affiliate marketing of sports betting increases bettor's confidence in certain types of bets. This heightens previously addressed concerns around affiliate marketing, given that affiliates are financially incentivised to attract custom toward gambling operators. Future research should explore risk factors for increased uptake of affiliate marketing, and the impact on gambling behaviour.
