The global polarization of the $\\Lambda$ and $\\overline\\Lambda$ hyperons is measured for Pb-Pb collisions at $\\sqrt{s_{\\rm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV recorded with the ALICE at the LHC. The results are reported differentially as a function of collision centrality and hyperon\u0027s transverse momentum ($p_{\\rm{T}}$) for the range of centrality 5-50%, $0.5 \u003c p_{\\rm{T}} \u003c5$ GeV/$c$, and rapidity $|y|\u003c0.5$. The hyperon global polarization averaged for Pb-Pb collisions at $\\sqrt{s_{\\rm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV is found to be consistent with zero, $\\langle P_{\\rm{H}}\\rangle$ (%) $\\approx$ 0.01 $\\pm$ 0.06 (stat.) $\\pm$ 0.03 (syst.) in the collision centrality range 15-50%, where the largest signal is expected. The results are compatible with expectations based on an extrapolation from measurements at lower collision energies at RHIC, hydrodynamical model calculations, and empirical estimates based on collision energy dependence of directed flow, all of which predict the global polarization values at LHC energies of the order of 0.01%.
An improved value for the lifetime of the (anti-)hypertriton has been obtained using the data sample of Pb–Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV collected by the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The (anti-)hypertriton has been reconstructed via its charged two-body mesonic decay channel and the lifetime has been determined from an exponential fit to the d N /d( ct ) spectrum. The measured value, τ=242−38+34 (stat.) ± 17 (syst.) ps, is compatible with representative theoretical predictions, thus contributing to the solution of the longstanding hypertriton lifetime puzzle.
The production of the $\ensuremath{\rho}{(770)}^{0}$ meson has been measured at midrapidity $(|y|<0.5)$ in $pp$ and centrality differential Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{NN}}=$ 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The particles have been reconstructed in the $\ensuremath{\rho}{(770)}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ decay channel in the transverse-momentum (${p}_{T}$) range 0.5--11 $\mathrm{GeV}/c$. A centrality-dependent suppression of the ratio of the integrated yields $2\ensuremath{\rho}{(770)}^{0}/({\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ is observed. The ratio decreases by $\ensuremath{\sim}40%$ from $pp$ to central Pb-Pb collisions. A study of the ${p}_{T}$-differential $2\ensuremath{\rho}{(770)}^{0}/({\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ ratio reveals that the suppression occurs at low transverse momenta, ${p}_{T}<2 \mathrm{GeV}/c$. At higher momentum, particle ratios measured in heavy-ion and $pp$ collisions are consistent. The observed suppression is very similar to that previously measured for the ${K}^{*}{(892)}^{0}/K$ ratio and is consistent with EPOS3 predictions that may imply that rescattering in the hadronic phase is a dominant mechanism for the observed suppression.
A measurement of the production of prompt $Lambda_{rm c}^{+}$ baryons in Pb-Pb collisions at $sqrt{s_{rm NN}} = 5.02 $ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC is reported. The $Lambda_{rm c}^{+}$ and $overline{Lambda}_{rm c}^{-}$ were reconstructed at midrapidity ($|y| u003c 0.5$) via the hadronic decay channel $Lambda_{rm c}^{+}rightarrow {rm p} {rm K}_{rm S}^{0}$ (and charge conjugate) in the transverse momentum and centrality intervals $6 u003c p_{rm T} u003c12$ GeV/$c$ and 0-80%. The $Lambda_{rm c}^{+}$/D$^0$ ratio, which is sensitive to the charm quark hadronisation mechanisms in the medium, is measured and found to be larger than the ratio measured in minimum-bias pp collisions at $sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV and in p-Pb collisions at $sqrt{s_{rm NN}} = 5.02 $ TeV. In particular, the values in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions differ by about two standard deviations of the combined statistical and systematic uncertainties. The $Lambda_{rm c}^{+}$/D$^0$ ratio is also compared with model calculations including different implementations of charm quark hadronisation. The measured ratio is reproduced by models implementing a pure coalescence scenario, while adding a fragmentation contribution leads to an underestimation. The $Lambda_{rm c}^{+}$ nuclear modification factor, $R_{rm AA}$, is also presented. The measured values of the $R_{rm AA}$ of $Lambda_{rm c}^{+}$, D$_{rm s}^+$ and non-strange D mesons are compatible within the combined statistical and systematic uncertainties. They show, however, a hint of a hierarchy $(R_{rm AA}^{{rm D}^{0}}u003cR_{rm AA}^{{rm D}_{rm s}^+}u003cR_{rm AA}^{Lambda_{rm c}^{+}})$, conceivable with a contribution of recombination mechanisms to charm hadron formation in the medium.
We report on the first measurement of an excess in the yield of $J/\ensuremath{\psi}$ at very low transverse momentum (${p}_{T}<0.3\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}/c$) in peripheral hadronic Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathrm{NN}}}=2.76\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$, performed by ALICE at the CERN LHC. Remarkably, the measured nuclear modification factor of $J/\ensuremath{\psi}$ in the rapidity range $2.5
We report on the inclusive production cross sections of J/$psi$, $psi$(2S), $Upsilon$(1S), $Upsilon$(2S) and $Upsilon$(3S), measured at forward rapidity with the ALICE detector in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy $sqrt{s}=8$ TeV. The analysis is based on data collected at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.28 pb$^{-1}$. Quarkonia are reconstructed in the dimuon-decay channel. The differential production cross sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum $p_{rm T}$ and rapidity $y$, over the $p_{rm T}$ ranges $0u003cp_{rm T}u003c20$ GeV/$c$ for J/$psi$, $0u003cp_{rm T}u003c12$ GeV/$c$ for all other resonances, and for $2.5u003cyu003c4$. The cross sections, integrated over $p_{rm T}$ and $y$, and assuming unpolarized quarkonia, are $sigma_{{rm J}/psi} = 8.63pm0.04pm0.79$ $mu$b, $sigma_{psi{rm (2S)}} = 1.18pm0.08pm0.21$ $mu$b, $sigma_{Upsilon{rm(1S)}} = 68pm6pm7$ nb, $sigma_{Upsilon{rm(2S)}} = 25pm5pm4$ nb and $sigma_{Upsilon{rm(3S)}} = 9pm4pm1$ nb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second one is systematic. These values agree, within at most $1.2sigma$, with measurements performed by the LHCb collaboration in the same rapidity range.
Data from High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments are collected with significant financial and human effort and are mostly unique. An inter-experimental study group on HEP data preservation and long-term analysis was convened as a panel of the International Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA). The group was formed by large collider-based experiments and investigated the technical and organizational aspects of HEP data preservation. An intermediate report was released in November 2009 addressing the general issues of data preservation in HEP and an extended blueprint paper was published in 2012. In July 2014 the DPHEP collaboration was formed as a result of the signature of the Collaboration Agreement by seven large funding agencies (others have since joined or are in the process of acquisition) and in June 2015 the first DPHEP Collaboration Workshop and Collaboration Board meeting took place. This status report of the DPHEP collaboration details the progress during the period from 2013 to 2015 inclusive.
We present results of a search for two hypothetical strange dibaryon states, i.e. the H-dibaryon and the possible $overline{Lambdamathrm{n}}$ bound state. The search is performed with the ALICE detector in central (0-10%) Pb-Pb collisions at $ sqrt{s_{rm{NN}}} = 2.76$ TeV, by invariant mass analysis in the decay modes $overline{Lambdamathrm{n}} rightarrow overline{mathrm{d}} pi^{+} $ and H-dibaryon $rightarrow Lambda mathrm{p} pi^{-}$. No evidence for these bound states is observed. Upper limits are determined at 99% confidence level for a wide range of lifetimes and for the full range of branching ratios. The results are compared to thermal, coalescence and hybrid UrQMD model expectations, which describe correctly the production of other loosely bound states, like the deuteron and the hypertriton.
We report on the first measurement of an excess in the yield of J/$psi$ at very low transverse momentum ($p_{rm T}u003c 0.3$ GeV/$c$) in peripheral hadronic Pb-Pb collisions at $sqrt{s_{rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV, performed by ALICE at the CERN LHC. Remarkably, the measured nuclear modification factor ($R_{rm AA}$) of J/$psi$ in the rapidity range $2.5u003cyu003c4$ reaches about 7 (2) in the $p_{rm T}$ range 0-0.3 GeV/$c$ in the 70-90% (50-70%) centrality class. The J/$psi$ production cross section associated with the observed excess is obtained under the hypothesis that coherent photoproduction of J/$psi$ is the underlying physics mechanism. If confirmed, the observation of J/$psi$ coherent photoproduction in Pb-Pb collisions at impact parameters smaller than twice the nuclear radius opens new theoretical and experimental challenges and opportunities. In particular, coherent photoproduction accompanying hadronic collisions may provide insight into the dynamics of photoproduction and nuclear reactions, as well as become a novel probe of the Quark-Gluon Plasma.
