Artificial Intelligence, i.e., complex algorithms that learn to perform functions associated with human minds, such as perceiving, decision-making, and demonstrating creativity. Indeed, more often than not, AI is trained on biased datasets, that is, this data is disproportionately weighted in favor of or against certain individuals or groups of individuals. The roots for such biases are very diverse, sometimes they are technical in nature, but often they originate in the minds of people, making it difficult to identify these biases, e.g. if such a disproportionate weighting is perceived as ‘normal’ by many, while it is still devastating to few. We argue that the use of virtue ethics in AI can help to mitigate the consequences of biases and to help identify such biases. In particular, we aim to assess in multiple online and field experiments how the virtue ‘transparency’ affects an individual’s decision-making and perceptions regarding the AI.
Today, many employees use privately owned digital solutions for professional and non-professional purposes, a phenomenon known as IT-consumerization. Apart from its positive outcomes, IT-consumerization entails a loss of control over the integration of the work-and non-work domain, which causes domain conflict. Domain conflict appears when work interferes with non-work (i.e., ‘presenteeism’) and vice versa (i.e., ‘ reversed presenteeism’). This last direction lacks research, although studies suggest that bo th directions induce similarly grave adverse effects. Building upon boundary theory and the person-environment fit model, we propose an overarching perspective to simultaneously assess how IT-consumerization affects presenteeism and reversed presenteeism, how these affect each other, and how they affect perceptions of strain. The results of our pre-study provide first evidence on the relationships between IT-consumerization, presenteeism, reversed presenteeism, and stress. Furthermore, they uncover the need for further investigation to understand the interrelationship between (reversed) presenteeism and individual - and organizational factors.
Non-compliant employees continue to pose a serious threat to information systems security. Most attempts to increase compliant behavior rely on measures that reduce employees’ latitude. However, recent studies suggest that this indeed eventuates in less compliance due to adverse behaviors of frustrated or stressed employees. In this study, we propose a novel approach where increased latitude –by means of permitting BYOx– increases the intention to comply. In order to do so, we first construct a theoretical model that links BYOx with empowerment and abuse intention. Subsequently, we run a feasibility study to assess our experimental design and the general feasibility of our propositions. The results suggest that psychological empowerment can indeed be manipulated with vignettes, and that changes in empowerment influence individuals’ abuse intentions. Based on such initial promising results, we outline how this novel approach to improve IS security compliance can be developed and investigated further.
